I disagree sir!

While Ashewo is Yoruba word.
Ashawo is a broken English word, that was borrowed from Ashewo.

Ibos choose that word from the broken side of things. Yes broken English popularize Ashawo as the preferred word for prostitution. And broken English is not specific to Ibos, it’s spoken across west Africa. Even my Liberian and Sierra Leon friends use Ashawo without knowing its origin but know that it means prostitute.

Ire o!
Big lie, Ashawo' is "Igbonization" of Ashewo'.
Same way "Agbero" is ignonized to Agboro in Igboland.
This is because those Yoruba words did not obey the rule called "Ndakorita Udaume" (agreement between vowels) in Igbo grammar. In that Igbo grammatical rule, there are two groups of vowels, the A-group and the E-group.
In every typical Igbo word, two vowels from different group can never be found in one word unless the word is a combination of two different words and can be separated into it's components parts. A non Igbo word that disobey this rule, igbos pronounce it with a replacement of the wrong vowel.
Now, is Agbero, also called Agboro in pidgin Nationwide?

You realise bini and other languages of southern Nigeria are from the Niger-Congo language family

And yes there are converging linguistic links here and there

For example

Oba in ìgbo means Barn for yams and other produces

Obà still means that plant used in making calabash

So don't brag about origin of word with people you're in same language family with

It ight mean something in their language you never can tell

If na lie ask any Igbo person wetin Olaniyi means in Igbo grin you'll be shocked
"Oba" in Urhobo language means the "the end or last point/place", "the highest authority" you can report to or take a matter to" possibly for adjudication. So it is possible Yoruba adopted that kingship title from Benin.

Meet Prince Ekaladerhan of Benin, popularly known as Oduduwa
Go and read the history book 📖 there was a prophesy that a man will come from foreign land to save ife from the great Oyó Empire.

Ikaladeran the crown prince of Bini who left his kingdom with his full entourage was found in the forest of ife by hunters in his full regalia

He was taken to the town and treated with respect and given a warm welcome, it was then he said “Izoduwa” meaning “I have reached home” they didn’t understand what he said because he was speaking Bini language. So all they heard was Oduduwa and that how his name came about.

He helped them win their freedom from Oyo empire and was made king afterwards, he got married and had children. Many years later he was asked to come back and rule his people, he refused because of the dispute he had with them that made him leave in the first place.

After much pressure he told them he is already an established king in ife with wives and children that it’s imposible to leave so he sent his 7th son Oromiyan to rule in his place because he was the only son not married as at then. As the Oba of Benin MUST marry a Bini princes.

Before now the kings in Bini kingdom are called Ogiso not Oba, Oromiyan who came to the palace through Useh was given a wife by the leader in Useh community under Bini kingdom.

Oromoiyan refused to be crowned Ogiso he said he prefers the name Oba, he later left because he felt the kingdom was too violent and warring, fortunately the wife he was given was pregnant, she gave birth to a male child who became the first Oba of Benin and not Ogiso of Ighodomighodo which was the real name .

Oduduwa came from Bini to save Ile Ife from Oyo that his grandson eventually founded?
I wish you knew how ridiculous this sounds.

You Twist History yet you accuse those who Correct you if distortion

Ijaw Itsekiri Ilaje Oyo Awori Egun all have almost the same History of Lagos
It is only Benin,'s account that is different

Same thing you did with the History of Oduduwa

If Ooni of Ife turns up in benin and Claims the Throne and Kingdom of benin he too is also right

Ok, Let us look at the praise names of oba of benin

One of it is
Abieyuwa N'Ovbi Odua N'uhe
The son of the wealthy Odua of Uhe(Ife).
(Odua of Ife is the same as oduduwa of Ife)

Another of oba of benin's praise names is

Ovbi' Adimila
The son of Adimila
oduduwa was also known as Olofin Adimula
Which was his Title

Notice there is no mention at all of any Ekhalerderhan of Igodomigodo or izoduwa that got lost

They did not remember or mention any Ekhalerderhan and izoduwa too is not happening anywhere in oba of benin's praise names but they called Oduduwa the great Odua of Ife his Father

So with their own mouths they themselves have already given the evidence that fully demolished and destroyed their case which had no legs to stand on in the first place and have confirmed with your own Mouth that the oba of benin was indeed oduduwa's Son
There is nothing left to drag because it is settled

Do you know that Yoruba has the first organized monarchical system in the Nigeria space.
O ba means he who presides over with authority. Oba ba lori ohun gbogbo. Meaning the king presides or has the preeminence over all things.

Some people think Yoruba don't know their history. The oral literature of Yoruba is very rich in history of stories and events as far back as 1300.

I wonder how some people don't use their brain when hearing gibberish.

It was Ife which birthed Oyo empire. So what freedom are you even talking about? Lol 😂As a matter of fact, Oranmiyan was ruling Oyo and Bini at the same time but couldn't rule two at a time thus had to leave for Oyo, even though the Bini didn't want him to leave for Oyo, thus were angry after he left.

Meanwhile, Oduduwa predates the whole existence of Bini. Before Ekaledehan who died in Ughoton was even born, Oduduwa already became an Ife king long ago. Oduduwa descended from Oke Ora to Ife to become the King after Obatala. Now, can you see the name "Oba"Tala? Ife birthed other towns.

The Benins notice the Ife people needed Organization after venturing into their land and they sent in their son to start a dynasty there which soon birthed the oyo empire, because Ife and oyo lack the skill Of proper organisation the kingdom collapsed within a short while

They couldn't have adopted a word which has no correlative meaning in the alleged origin language.
Especially at a time where language is solely transmitted via word of mouth.
There is no record oral or written that shows that the Ogisos were called "Obas".
Oba loosely translated as "he who reigns" has no secondary meaning in this case. It is specific word for a Yoruba king.

Does Oba mean anything in Benin Language

It's either yes or no

Talking about Igbo Language is very irrelevant here

Because Oba in Igbo doesn't mean what it means in Benin or Yoruba, so it's out of point

In Yoruba, O - ba means King, he who presides...

In Benin, explain how oba means King, simple

I am a Linguist

It is called omo noba

Simple meaning it means king

Deeper meanimg

It means omo noba ( the child that shines for the edo people) that is the actual title not just oba

Lol

Omonoba is a corruption of the Yoruba words 'Omo Oba' Prince

The first Oba Of Benin was a Prince from Ife

Omo is a Yoruba word, meaning child, Benins adopted it.

👌

How does the child that shines for the Edo people translates to KING

Yoruba owns the word ' Oba " we gave it to the tiny Edo people.

Below is the pictorial image of who owned and used the word before we inculcated it into Benin Kingship being our junior.

Note ; the picture taken in the year 1937. Observe the name and title of the then-Oba of

The Ekaledehan who died in Ughoton. Na craze? In fact, Before the existence of the whole Bini, Oduduwa already ruled several years and died!

It was even Bini who were crying for organisation thus Oranmiyan being there but had to leave because he couldn't be in two places at a time thus had to leave for Oyo thus their anger because they didn't want Oranmiyan to leave. Then the Bini quickly made his son a king after he was birthed while Oranmiyan already left.

You're a liar

This is the true story:

Kingdom; they are the Ogisos. The Ogiamien Royal Family has been in existence since the year 900 AD until 1200AD, when the then ruling Ogiamien leased part of the Igodomigodo land to Oba Eweka 1, as a result of the treaty at Ekiokpagha, which led to the leasing of half of the Igodomigodo land to the then Oba of Benin. All the documents of lease from Oba Eweka 1 to the immediate past Oba of Benin are in our custody.

We had to apply for a variation of bail in the Benin High Court. This was how we were able to secure our freedom from their arm-twisting tactics. The Ogiamien Royal Family had to challenge my arrest and the appropriateness of the edict they secretly repealed.

As we speak, the Oba and his people are not contesting the legality of our claims as the Ogiamien Royal Family. What they have been advancing is that it is too late for us to begin to ask for our right, even when it is clear to all that we got to know of their illegality very late, and the court has told them that it is not too late for us to ask for our right, that we have a case. This is where we are now.

High Chief Esotericist Monday Wehere, JP explained further: “What is today known as Benin Kingdom started as Igodomigodo nine centuries ago. It was founded by Ogiso Igodo and it existed for 300 years before King Orominyan of Ife invaded Benin. During that invasion, Orominyan fought without any success. Before then, Orominyan came to Benin with a strategy. He brought a large number of Yoruba men into Benin long before the proper expedition. These men went into relationships with our daughters who started having children for them. By the time Orominyan came to attack Benin in 11th Century, the number of the Yoruba-born children was high. In spite of this, however, he still failed in his attack.

When Orominyan was returning to Ile-Ife without achieving his aim, as one of the strategies they invented, he deliberately impregnated a princess, the daughter of an “Enigie” – duke or king in Benin under the then Ogiso. The princess’ name was Elimide. He left her behind before returning to Ife. It was Princess Elimide that gave birth to the first Oba of Benin, Oba Eweka 1, who, after becoming an adult, was invited back to Ile-Ife, alongside other children they had secretly produced through our daughters without our knowing their game-plan.

Up till today, they still live in a place called Yoruba Quarters in Benin City. It was at that Ile-Ife meeting, which had Eweka in attendance that these children were told the reasons they were given birth to in Benin, that it was Oba Orominyan’s desire to use them to overthrow the then Ogiso Erebo and his dynasty, which was then known as Igodomigodo. They were all made to swear to an oath never to betray Eweka, who was to become the Oba of Benin, if they eventually succeeded.

Expectedly, this particular war was protracted as many people died on both sides. The carnage was much. It was, however, difficult for the then Ogiso to use extra force, as he felt his grandchildren were being used in the war. He kept saying the children being used by the Oba to prosecute his war were children of Benin daughters, even though they were now supporting their father’s side to fight the Ogiso.

It was at this point a truce was called. As there were no victor and no vanquished, Ogiso Erebo was told there was no way this large number of children born by Benin women for Yoruba men could be repatriated, since they had already been integrated into the heart of Igodomigodo. He was told the only way to maintain peace was for him to divide Igodomigodo into two kingdoms. Let the oba take a part, while he would hold on to the other part.

It was a very difficult thing for Ogiso Erebo to accept, but after much persuasion, he realised that he had to accept this very difficult condition. So, he divided Igodomigodo into two parts. This was how Oba Eweka 1 became an oba in that part of Igodomigodo now known as Benin Kingdom. Ogiso took the other part now known as Utantan.

There was an agreement then known as Ekiokpagha Treaty, which was signed by Oba Eweka 1 and Ogiso Erebo. In that treaty, eight conditions were given that must not be breached by either side. One aspect of that treaty stipulates: “I am giving you Oba Eweka 1 this half of Igodomigodo on lease and not sold to you in any way. From time to time, you should go to my children to renew the lease agreement anytime there is a vacancy in the Oba’s stool.”

Another condition is that under any circumstances, the Oba’s army will never come to harass the Ogiso’s army. The third condition is that neither the Oba nor the Ogiso will ever have cause to marry from each other’s family. Another condition is that Ogiso children will never kneel down to worship the Oba of Benin. The sixth condition is that anytime the Oba is coming to re-enact the treaty, he would bring a cow alongside other items.

It was this condition the present Oba refused to fulfil before ascending the throne. The treaty was sealed with a death penalty – that any person from both sides who violate these conditions would be put to death.

When Palace Watch contacted Frank Erabor, secretary to the BTC, he directed us to the Esogban of Benin; Chief David Edebiri, whom he said was the right person to speak on the matter. Chief Edebiri, however, declined to comment, saying, “There are several aspects of the Ogiamien issue in court and with the police, but that they may react appropriately if necessary.”

Some borrow a word they have before and after sometimes the borrowed word become more popular. I'm not applying it to Ife/Benin wahala oo
For example. In Igbo language
Prostitute = Akwuna
But yoruba word Ashewo which is pronounce as Ashawo in igbo accent is more popular. Even Flavor's song "Ashawo' was a hit

Neckpresser101:

Not necessarily true

For example

I can say "

That's your mom over there ọkwa ya?

But I always prefer saying

That's your mom over there abi?

Abi is Yoruba word and ọkwa ya is igbo word for same thing 'right'

It's just convinience

I have seen Yorubas saying
Biko alot that doesn't mean they don't have a word for 'please'
It's just convnience.

Again I might be wrong one thing I'm sure tho is oduduwa can not fall from the sky who knows Binis might be right saying he's Thier son
