Good morning everyone,

I'm in a very confused state, after moved my resumption date from August 2023 to January 2024 due to non availability of interview dates in Nigeria, I finally got a date for interview in November, all payments were made, receipt received and confirmed, only for me to go for the interview on the 30th of Nov, after the long Queue verification, I was told my Sevis fee payment is not reflecting, I should contact my school and reschedule my appointment, see me that is meant to resume school by January,

As I'm typing now, my sevis fee payment is reading active online, why couldn't this people see this from their own end. ?
Did you use an agent?
Who paid Sevis fee for you?

I have been on the phone with CGI since Monday but they still haven't resolved it yet. They initially said to wait 48hrs but that has since elapsed. Now they say i should wait another 72 hrs. Someone else advised me to just pay another MRV and open a new profile. I just want to know if I'm wasting my time tryin to revalidate this current MRV. Thank you
Why are you calling CGI instead of going to GTB to get ur payment record? There is a GTB emailed copy of your payment in sombedoy’s email right now. If you used an agent, ask him or her to reprint GT receipt for you

While I have limited knowledge and information regarding this(as most schools I applied to do not have such prerequisite and it is not too common in MSc applications, except it is for research, if I am not mistaken), I think you have to go through the schools' website and then to the program(s) you're applying to and then look at the faculty members and see the professors or teachers there whose areas of work you admire or align with yours.
You can subsequently send them email(using their school contact email address) that you're interested in their works(mention specific works you are interested) and tell them you're applying to their school and will like to mentored by them if you're accepted into the program.
NB: Include a brief background of yours, and you can let them know it is because of your interest in their area of work that you're applying to school. The subject of the email could something like, "Request to be mentored by you".

Some may response, others may ignore. Don't be discouraged by that.
All the best.
ColdHunter:

Hello Chief, so I've narrowed my search to 4 universities and will be applying to all 4 of them for MSc.

They are University of Manitoba - Paediatricand Child Health, Simon Fraser - Gerontology, Memorial University of Newfoundland - Health Ethocs or Publoc Health and University of Alberta - Public Health.

My query is on searching for a supervisor as it's a prerequisite. When mailing the supervisor is there a template I should use or are there specific information I should to include to improve my chances of favorable response?

Hey !

Honesty doesn't pay most time . Don't do like the western bred because you are an African .

Naturally a guy bred in the US or UK will tick yes i have been indicted before ...and that doesn't mean that they will say ...Oh ! You have said the truth okay you can go .. No , they would rather place the honest guy on watchful eyes of the cops 😊

In your own case as an African, you were actually did not booked , you were only unlawfully arrested among culprits and later released upon satisfactorily investigated which eventually exonerated you .

Your answer is ..NO ! I have never been arrested or accused of any crime before .

Hello,

I have a bachelor in pharmacy here in Nigeria, obtained 2023.
Pharmacy students in Nigeria undergo training in PharmaCognosy ( field of pharmacy that studies use of medicinal plants in healing and also understudies manufacture and use of chemicals to kill weed encroaching in medicinal plants farm. This is called herbicide use study).

I happen to gain 100% scholarship admission and Graduate assistantship (paid stipends) in soil and plant science through rigorous interviews. The masters in soil and plant science has a specifics in weed science).

I’m finding it hard to convince the visa officer that masters in soil and plant science with emphasis on weed and herbicide science, is actually related to pharmacy. Can that sale ? That I want to become an agroscientist and so a graduate masters in soil and plant science will position me well to become an expat in that field? And if they ask, so why didn’t you obtain an agriculture bachelors ? I want to answer simply because i want to focus on chemical and medicinal aspect of agroscience. Is that convincing?

Hearing a masters in soil and plant science, and looking that I have a bachelor degree in pharmacy seems off for a stranger. And they never have the patience to listen to what you have to say, nor do they want to be convinced by you at times. Once it’s just off to them, every other thing you’re saying is pouring water on stone.

Actually, I prefer this field because as much as chemistry and pharmacology masters are the area of interests for pharmacy graduates, I don’t want to wear lab coat to conduct wet lab researches and sit in labs all day like chemistry and pharmacology masters do, I prefer field work and really enjoyed PharmaCognocy (area of pharmacy related to plants).. i really enjoyed that in my university and came out as best graduating student in PharmaCognosy department, faculty of pharmacy.

Doing wet lab research don tire me. Visa officer might consider an agriculture graduate to be more qualified and will want to start asking what will this degree do for you as a pharmacist? Going for masters in soil and plant science with emphasis in weed science as a pharmacist? (Remember USA are into doctor of pharmacy and not bachelor of pharmacy so their own pharmacy degree has a hospital/clinical focus unlike ours that is still multi-disciplinary).

That question is a tough nut for me to crack, I have a way of answering it but I am discouraged because of how non-understanding they will become once they raise eyebrows about how your masters will impact on your undergraduate or the link.

Like I said I was the best graduating student in PharmaCognosy field in school and want to look at how to solve the problem of herbicide resistance that is gaining ground among weed and pests in medicinal plants farms.

I just need words of encouragement or less? Because these visa officers can be unreasonable? Throwing these large amounts o money around in name of visa interview hoooing, ds-160 for something that looks tricky and discouraging is…. i dunno, off? For a young graduate?

Hey !

You have developed a natural bias (dislike in quote) for the COs (consular Officers) and i don't want to blame you because every former visa hopefuls whose visa have been denied has fallen into your thinking group 😊

You have not even attended an interview before ( or have you ? ) but in your explanation , you said you are finding it hard to convince the VO that masters in soil and plant science with emphasis on weed and herbicide science is actually related to pharmacy.

You are an outstanding scholar but the devil is using the FEAR OF THE VO to discourage you.

Gaining 100% scholarship admission and Graduate Assistantship in soil and plant science through rigorous interviews is a great feat which not many students can achieve.

Being the best graduating student in PharmaCognosy field in school is another exclusive achievement.

COMMON WAKE UP ! !

Go and attend your interview and tutor the VO the importance of what you are going for . Don't brake the record other people have broken ...brake your own record. You have broken some academically already.

Every VOs is a psychologist and your DS 1 60 furnished with your present academic profiles will place you in the heart of every Consular Officer .

Hey !

https://portal.ustraveldocs.com/

Or type CGI PROFILE on Google and click on the next page . You will have to register with your email address as a 1st timer though .

Don't worry about 2024 already booked . As a prospective International student , you have one of the best chances to secure an emergency visa interview. You will understand the moment you are able to login to your CGI.

Anyways. You will be given a priority (emergency visa interview appointment) to attend interview before your resumption.

Your deficit is too to much to be covered by a Naija lawfirm that you have been working for since 2021?

Why would a company spend so much $$ on a new hire like you?

Would you spend such an amount on a new employee if you were the CEO of the company?

I think his/her earnings could also add to it. Imagine a company paying over 200% a staff total's compensation as tuition.

Hi Everyone. I need an honest feedback on this. I intend going for a PhD Economics in the US with a First class degree in Economics, GREQ 170, GREV 163, AWA 3.5 and two years experience as a researcher in a consulting firm . I'm considering US schools within the 40-100 ranking. Would you advise I proceed with my PhD application or I opt for a terminal Masters program. And can you recommend schools I may add to my bucket list?

Note: The funding opportunities for PhD program is my driving force.

You can pursue the PhD however, it might be a little challenging but you can use open coursework to brush/improve your mathematical knowledge (Calculus 1 and 2, Ordinary Differential Equation, and Numerical Methods). Cos Economics Grad programs are heavy on abstract math.

Perhaps you don't know how to do it or you have forfeited your emergency option.

Tell us what options do you have left in your CGI page.

You're having a problem because even you realize this is an implausible explanation. Pharmacy (humans) to soil science (non-humans) is a 180-degree pivot. It has zero to do with the VOs. You would have been better off going for a masters program in pharmacology.

VO: Why are you going to the US

Me: I am going to the US to study for my master program in HRM at Bleep university while I will be staying in the USA for 1 year and 18 months as the program duration implies.

VO: Why the US

Me: During my personal research, I got to realized that the best universities to study HRM are located in USA according to Edurank statistics. Usa is also known for its world class educational system, cultural diversity, professionals and experts in various fields/industry.

Vo: How many schools did you apply to

Me: I applied to two schools which are Bleep state university and Bleep university and the two schools gave me admission with funding

VO: Why Bleep state university

Me: Aside the fact I am awarded a merit based scholarship. The university is among the top 30 best universities to study hrm in the world and their swift response to my mail and questions was top notch. I have had series of conversations with my programme coordinator and I have been enlightened in summary the various trainings, practicals and internship packages I will undergo during the course of the program.

VO: Why do you want to study HRM

Me: I have always have keen interest in managing Human Resources and taking strategic decisions in everything I do which is why I studied a related course here in Nigeria due to the fact that hrm is not studied as a course in Nigeria. This program will help me achieve my short and long term goals. My short term goal is to get a senior role in the HR department at my workplace after my program where I can gain more experience and utilize the practical knowledge and skills I have learnt towards my long term goal. My long term goal is to established a recruiting/consulting firm where I get to help numerous business and organizations recruit the right candidates and also be as a consultant which will also help reduce the country rate of unemployment.

Vo: what’s your post-study plan

Me: I will be returning to my home country to take a senior role in my workplace where I get to utilize all practical knowledge, skills and experience learnt towards the productivity of the firm. After years of doing that, I will be establishing my own recruitment/consulting firm where I get to employ professionals and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.

Vo: how do you intend to fund your program

Me: I am being awarded a merit based scholarship which comes with a 50% tuition waiver and a graduate assistantship which come with a monthly stipend for my upkeep.

Vo: where do you work

Me: I work at xxxxx as an administrative support and my job role is to check mate staff productivity and their relation with clients. I also deal with the checks and balance of the POS machines on a weekly basis where I get to give report to the management weekly.

Me: Nope, I will be getting that upon acceptance of the visa.

Vo: Do you have any relative in the US

Me: No

Vo: Which country have you been to,

Me: None, I have no reason to travel

Like I said I was the best graduating student in PharmaCognosy field in school and want to look at how to solve the problem of herbicide resistance that is gaining ground among weed and pests in medicinal plants farms.

I just need words of encouragement or less? Because these visa officers can be unreasonable? Throwing these large amounts o money around in name of visa interview hoooing, ds-160 for something that looks tricky and discouraging is…. i dunno, off? For a young graduate?
Have you ever applied for F1?
If not then stop assuming what VOs think

If you got a scholarship for this field then focus on selling why this field is of interest to you. How you passed that course in your pharmacy degree. Connect you pharmacy degree to this degree.
Put it in say 5 short sentences and talk to yourself what you've written.
Short sentences you hear because interviews are short times.

You are over analyzing this and it will come across as you not knowing what you want.

Your main focus should be getting a date in time for school resumption.

The truth is simple, it doesn't

If you don't mind sharing
How much was your school COA
How much was your attendance

Cost of tuition and living expenses was $37,000
Family funds was to be used father 41m, SOA , me 6m SOA, I had the documents with, but VO was not even interested.

Other factors that could have led to denial, was maybe my age(31 years) and single.

Another thing I noticed was the crowd of people all had very rich dad with exorbitant SOA, so the VO might have been sick of hearing g how great everyone's dad is doing.......my thoughts, you need to see her when I started talking about how i will fund my studies, she was not even looking, she just kept typing and when she was done, she interjected me like stop talking bro........ 😂, just take your blue paper.

My advice is for anyone going, please try to secure some funding with the school you re attending, they already have preconceived notion about us. Pray very well, at least some people smiled out today

You need to understand that even those in the US who pay home fees either get loans, use college funds set up when they were little or work and school to afford school fees.

My two cents
Get a reasonable tuition costbor get school funding.
Using your parent as the source of majority of your fees as a graduate that works.

VOs don't look at your docs unless they ask of it.

Bro thanks, but I find it difficult to understand some of your points, with the way you typed

Are you saying using my father has the major sponsor is a red flag?

And when you say reasonable tuition, my tuition was $18990 and living expenses for the duration was $15000, My dad can pay my tuition, coupled with the fact that I will still find some student jobs to support my living expenses plus my 6m

Just as a piece of advice for those attending Visa interviews, I see a pattern where if your sponsor is either your parents or siblings, including relatives, are being rejected, may be one out of 20 is approved. It means the VO does not trust these sources of funds anymore. Then the rhetoric of how everyone's brothers, mothers, and sisters are doing so well in Nigeria is a general slogan for visa attendees. VO is used to hearing these high-fluting descriptions, and immediately after you start the line, VO loses interest and issues you the Blue paper.
So what do you need to do? If truly the funds are available from your sources, ask that the funds be moved to your account, and use the account to secure your I-20. It will now read Personal funds as the source of funding. This will remove the first doubts, then you can explain the source that your parents or sibling has gifted you the funds required to support your education, and these funds are deposited into your personal accounts, and offer to show the VO proof of your bank statement. VO will now be the person to ask what your sponsors are doing to have such funds to support you, at this point, the table has tilted, and you can start explaining how successful your sponsors are. Thank you
