Jokerman: 1.The British gave us railways, true, but the railways were narrow gague...which meant a trip between Lagos and Kano would take two days. MEANWHILE...by 1970's the same trip via road would take a whole day. That does wonders for passengers. 2.The railways the british gave us were for transporting goods and servicies. That's why they were darn slow. They were for transporting crops, metals, etc...people was an afterthought. 3.Railways failed in my opinion because they were heavily subsidised, and they lost money...plus road travel was quite simply a bit faster. It's only now we are getting standard gague railway lines. By the way, the extension of the railways to Maiduguri was completed after independence. A major project. Railways worked at least till 1990...when they collapsed. 3 Likes |

Goodvibes007: What a good development for the region, rest is left for them if they like they should divert river to the rail line again as they did in the past by powerful people who they only source of livelihood is transport, Their stand is that resuscitate of railways affect their business negatively |

Jokerman: The British actually did this. This is not entirely new just refurbishing, in some section we even use the old tracks and in most cases the old bridge and carriage way constructed. |
