17k? I'm guessing this was late 70s early 80s. You should note that was probably the yearly salary of mid level civil servant

17k was big money then.

You could buy a Mercedes Benz then with 10k.

It's so sad what Nigeria has become. Can the poor be rich?

Yes!

The thing is, there'll always be poor and rich.

What we should fight and strive for is bridge and reduce the gap between both extremes

In what year was this?
It was still very expensive in my opinion.

I dare say it is easier to be rich (or at least well off) now than before, because the opportunities that are available now were not in those days.
u don't know the year but u think it is expensive. Wonders shall never end.
U want the flight to be free?
Do u know that lagos-new york return ticket now costs more than N4M? And u are saying that 17k for a year u don't know is expensive.
Even these food u cook and sell for 3k, 4k cost 2kobo, 5kobo those days.

This your analysis no too clear. Let's keep it simple. Both our minimum wage and air fares are in Naira.

In 1985 when minimum wage was 125 Naira, you needed to earn it 139 times to afford the Lagos to New York ticket then.

Now with min wage of 30k and average lag to NY ticket of 2 to 2.5 million Naira, you will need to earn 66 to 81 times the current min wage to afford the ticket.

Seems like it was way more expensive back then.

Flight tickets is not determined by naira but foreign currency so you need to factor the exchange rate.

That is when we can know Wat to say

No be to dey show us 17k for flight as if 20k was the minimum wage then
What has minimum wage got to do with international flight? I paid about Euros 2,000 from Europe to Lagos. What % is the minimum wage to this if you convert to naira? Europe is just at the backyard compared to New York

I don't understand what you are saying. Things are very expensive in Nigeria because of inflation and poor governance and not because more people are wealthy. An average Nigerian man does not have 200k in his/her bank account or any form of investment. Are you now saying that the reason why 1 USD = 1200 Naira is because we have more rich people in Nigeria now than when the exchange rate was 700 or 400 Naira?

Europe was also at the backyard then when a whopping 17k was paid for flight, even when minimum wage was below 120naira

Nigerians started buying tokumbo vehicles in 1987. Before then, everyone was buying brand new vehicles straight from the dealership.

It wasn't because they could afford it.

For many people what happened was that if you worked for government, they would pay you a car loan. EMPHASIS ON LOAN...because that money was not dash. You had that money paid back from yer salary.

Sometimes the money won't be enough for a car of your taste. My pater back in 1981, he had his car loan come in, but he wanted a better car, so he borrowed more money to make it up..and bought the car.

This was around 1970's then the exchange rate to dollar was around $1 to 0.71naira. If you check the price of mercedes Benz as of then it should be as low as 10,000. But today a new mercedes Benz should cost more than 6m. That 10,000 is equivalent to 16m today. Our father was able to afford best quality when he wanted to build his house buh now u have to spend not less than 150m or 200m to build such house

How do you know what year the photo was taken? There was no time in history that our minimum wage was about $30 as it is now. So if anything, it was by far more affordable back in the days than it is now going by minimum wage because flights are priced in dollar.

Do you know that minimum wage used to be almost $300, $200, then $100 until less than $30 that we have now?

Thanks..so how many 120naira can we find in 17k??

And how many current minimum wage can we find in todays flight charge to the same destination??

The minimum wage of 120 naira was no longer in effect with this airfare

Here is 2015 thread on same topic and you get to see a contributor listing each year and corresponding official exchange rate plus parallel market

View the above link to see 1993 cost of Lagos-New york in dollar. This is proof that the air fare price was in the 90s and minimum wage was already higher

The Naira was stronger than the dollar at the time

N17,430 x NGN800(FG budget exchange rate) will give a fair idea of the value of that ticket today.

Very expensive flight ticket at the time! angry

Op. That mount as at then can buy plots of land or even buy a car. I grew up to see my late father owning hectares of land which he bought with less than 300.

The prodigal generation destroyed everything. They stole and plundered to create a dichotomy between them and the masses. They built a future for their families abroad while they continue to use sycophants to support their selfish political ambitions.
I pity those whose heads are empty to comprehend this. You continue to support your oppressors while you live from hand to mouth. Their own children are spending big outside the country and you are here shouting.
You go understand last last.

17K for a ticket from Lagos to NY in what year?

I bought my one-way ticket from Lagos to NY in 1987 for N300, on Nigeria Airways.

The world has changed, stop comparing old prices to now.
How much was NY to Atlanta in 1987 to what it is now? Not comparable.

People were contented with the little they had and basically lived within their means

Unlike today,7 crates of coca cola products was enough for young working couple to organise their marriage ceremony. But this fare was in the 90s

@ tonicyril, Shagari increased the minimum wage to 120 naira

THAT FARE CAN'T BE IN 90s.
