At the end of the day, men need to make the effort to get close to their children.

Children are close to their mothers because mothers take time to get close to their children, ask how they do after school, be there for them. Many of us men, just do work, and then get home, sit in front of tv set, and don't ask how our children are doing, what their struggles are, how life is going, etc.

That is why we get the wrong idea that women are closer to their children naturally. ( I recall one of my mother's relatives who was close to all his kids despite being a very busy man).

Also, I find it strange you did not see the sacrifices that your father was making as a child. Personally, I did see that my dad was doing a lot for us, from childhood. Yes, my mother told us how much he was sacrificing for us, but even me, I could see it as it was happening.
