The searing torment that everyday folks are going through in Nigeria right now is so dire, so unbearably extreme, and so unexampled in its rawness that even diasporan Nigerians like me who live tens of thousands of miles away from home can feel it not just vicariously but also experientially.https://www.farooqkperogi.com/2024/02/tinubu-nigeria-is-sinking-and-streets.html

In other words, Tinubu is doing exactly what Atiku and Obi had proposed they would do, and the results would have been the same. The hyperinflation and hurt Nigerians are going through now won’t have been evaded because it is Atiku or Obi who removed petrol subsidies “from day one.” The naira’s glide to the bottom wouldn’t have been avoided because Atiku or Obi “floated” the naira. The wailing losers have forgotten this. They assume any negative trend can always be used to promote their candidate at the expense of whoever is there now. |

Where is Tinubu? Tinubu has wrecked the country and he is chilling outside the country and telling Nigerians he is on a private visit. What manner of irresponsibility is that? Was he elected to take private visits at public expense ![]() Nigerians will never ever learn. They will do same mistakes over and over again simply because they are so engrossed in playing sentimental and crude ethnic Politics in electing their leaders. They didn't learn from the mistake of electing Buhari, they haven't still learnt from electing Tinubu. Too old grumpy men who should be in retirement homes. Just as the Hausa/ Fulani northern folks defended Buhari for all his clueless incompetence and bad policies, the Yorubas of the south-west are all out to defend Bola Tinubu with their blood. Same way the Ibos of the South-East would have defended Peter Obi if he was President. Even if Tinubu's policies sink Nigeria to the deepest gallows, his people will still defend him (though in a more reasonable manner than their northern counter part). The way things are in the country presently, na Sidon look be my own. Las last, we all will be served. |

I find it ridiculous when some folks keep repeating 'Obi also said he will remove subsidy and float the forex'. There is a difference between words and actions. One might change plans when faced with the negative impacts that may occur. It is ridiculous to cherrypick the one that suits you. Why didn't Kperogi say anything about how Obi promised to fight insecurity if elected? Tinubu, Obi and Atiku promised to fight insecurity. Why is Tinubu not implementing the fight? Terrorists are doing promo. Kperogi should channel his criticism only on the one elected. |

Imagine a country whose monthly minimum wage is N30,000($21) feeling cool when their president removed fuel subsidy. The major problem we have in Nigeria is the fake and complicit intellectual class that deceive the poorly educated masses. If you see how some monkeys attacked me when I advocated for subsidy to remain, you would understand why the Nigerian masses do not deserve any pity. They blindly believed subsidy was evil because Obi, Tinubu and Atiku were against it. Stupid dummies. |

Hope can be built on delusion at times and that's what happened to Nigerians expecting someone who supervised and sustained the chaos in Lagos to come save Nigeria and bring orderliness. He cannot inspire production, or productivity. He only knows how to tax people and do lootables projects. All the positives we are hoping on are projects that predates emilokan. |

The one area I agree with this article is that we don't have original thinkers in the leadership class in Nigeria. Tinubu, Atiku and Obi were all parroting cut-and-paste IMF policies during their campaigns. |

Why trying to blame Obi for a Tinubu's failure?......Why shifting responsibility? If the other way round, will Obi get the credit. Let us call a spade a spade. Hypocrisy cannot get us anywhere. Tinubu and his cohort failed Nigeria and they should take full responsibility |

The idea that petrol subsidies had to go because they were riddled with corruption and that they consumed a disproportionate share of our national budget is a mere propagandistic cop-out. If petrol subsidy administration is rid of corruption (that is perpetrated in cahoots with the government, which explains why no “subsidy thief” has ever been apprehended much less brought to justice), it would consume no greater share of our national budget than any governmental obligation. That is the problem with the article. Mr Kperoogi, like most Nigerians believes that subsides are essential for our economic growth. Well, we tried subsides for over 40 years, and our economy has not grown as it should. Unless he wants to suddenly label all our past NIgerian leaders, the ones he blasted inclusive, as good leaders. The problem with the subsidy wasn't even the corruption. It was the fact that we were running out of money to maintain fuel below N200 , talkless of below N100 even. It was getting to a point where our debt servicing was above 90% of our revenue. But people like Kperoogi, and most Nigerians, including here on this site, are in denial. They want subsidy to be kept, and all they believe is that if we eliminate corruption, it would be ok. Well, it won't. SO long as fuel consumption, production cost, increase, it means that government would be spending more and more and more money on subsides. TO the point that our debt would eat all our earnings, and grow larger than our earnings. Then the economy collapses. That is why over the years, there have been partial removal of subsides, including by this admin. The problem is, the whole subsidy thing has discouraged domestic refining. And now we are about to have a domestic refinery...and subsidy has not yet been removed. NIger, GHana, and many African countries have working refineries and no subsidies. THe thing is, subsidy has to go. The annoying thing is that supporting subsidy removal means in the mind of Kperogi and most NIgerians that you are a supporter of the corn, or a tinubu supporter. Pardon. I no dey support APC. Or any other big party. But when I hear that our debt was , until this latest partial removal, eating over 90% of our revenue, what else should I support? Subsidies remaining, and a disaster happening? Or a total removal, and at least some hope we survive long enough for some sort of diversification to kick in (I don't trust that this government is even serious about it self). Supporting subsidy removal does not mean you support tinubu, IMF, OBi, atiku, gej, buhari, obasanjo, IBB, et. It means you support NIgeria not being like Sri Lanka down the road, where we have no money, and are at the mercy of IMF . INfact, we are already there. Venezuela has subsidsed fuel for over 60 years. See where they are. Dead broke. |

nairalanda1:Read and understand except, of course, you're being mischievous. Subsidy isn't bad but the corruption that goes with it in Nigeria. The US, UK, Russia, China and Europe all subsidize one or two things to stimulate economic growth and to help their populace. |

I wonder why people like this are allowed to castigate our country for no reason—insulting the people's president is tantamount to showing your naked yansh on the whole country. Nigeria needs at least 1,000 years to get it right, so we the poor masses must cease complaining and enjoy this; while waiting patiently for 2027 to scream "obedient" and "atikulate" before bringing back our darling president to continue from where he stopped. |

tishbite43:1.Subsidy is not bad, but you have to have the money to pay for it. Here in NIgeria, our tax to gdp is too low to pay for subsides. As for the oyel money....90% is going on debt servicing , and we produce as much as Libya, which has 8 million people, and which can afford to subsidise. We have 200 million people, and far more needs than LIbya. Wey the money go come from.? 2.US, UK, Russia, China, and Europe pay what is called production subsides. In other words, they pay money to the refining companies to see if they can reduce costs. The refineries and market still set the prices. Also, US Has some form of financial aid to the poor re fuel, but you have to be means tested to see if you deserve it.(and if the government thinks you earn above a certain level, ye don't qualify). US by the way, fuel prices vary from place to place. Some states eg California, are very very expensive. (Also spend some time on US sites like reddit...someone posts a thread showing a photo of a fuel station in the USA from say 1949 or 1960's where fuel costs 50 cents a gallon, and people would be complaining like NIgerians, lol). Here, we made the refining companies sell fuel below production cost, and paid them a subsidy that doesn't adequately cover the production cost. That is how we went from 40000bpd capacity in 1986 to 92000bpd in 2011, to 6000bpd in 2019. And because domestic refining was not profitable, the refineries all collapse. Venezuela also does subsides like we do. Fuel costs N40 there. Meanwhile they have lost refining capacity so badly it is sad. NIger is poorer than we are, they have a refinery, they have domestic crude production, and fuel there costs 1000 naira per liter or more. NO subsidy. DItto Ghana. Two working refineries self in Ghana. |
