Are You Using What You Studied In School In Real Life? by Matrix137(m): 7:58pm On Feb 03
I'm referring mostly to Graduates of Nigerian university. (Public Universities in Particular)

I'm asking this because I studied Public administration and graduated with 2:2 but all my knowledge ended after my final exam.

I don't remember even a single thing i studied in school not to talk of applying them in real life.
Who else feels this way?

Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers are exempted from this question

Re: Are You Using What You Studied In School In Real Life? by Reminderz: 10:42pm On Feb 03
yes...

most people only go to school due to pressure or societal norms... not due to what they want to do or plan to do... this is also why most people waste significant years studying useless courses just to show that they are graduate... graduates with nothingness... schooling is only meant to enlighten you, it's not a platform for success... to succeed, you have to do more than just schooling or else you're going to join the rat race and end up working as a slave till you die..

before you enroll yourself in school, ask yourself, "why are you enrolling and what do you plan to achieve?" if your mindset is to go to school so that you can wear a suit to work in a nice office, then you're in for a long ride...

Technically I do. I work in a related field but I don’t believe I had to go through the rigours to be effective at my Job. I can train a secondary school leaver on the technical aspect of my Job and they should be good after 7-9 months on the job experience.

When I was in SS2, I knew the formats of a balance sheet and P & L by heart. Now you just punch in numbers in a software and it does the work for you. However, you can’t deny the place of education as regards thinking, strategy, tact, communication etc.

A lot of things learnt in school wasn’t taught in the classroom. You learnt coping with stress, time management, meeting deadlines, discipline, socialization, patience, will, character etc. All these are required in your job too.

Let's address this. When you chose to study public administration in school, what work did you planning on doing with it after school

Societies don't grow like this because things are out of place. How can somebody that studied Geology end up as a Banker and expect him to do excellently in that sector. Large percentage of our sectors are in comatose due to try and error mentality.

You have said it all
To get the admission sef for the "good" courses is very difficult. I applied for Law initially but after three years of attempts with no admission, I was forced to accept Public administration on the fourth Jamb attempt or risk loosing it all. So what do you expect!!
Note I scored above 250 in all attempts

I think my submission is the same regardless of field of study. Arts, Science or Business.

The university can introduce a course called car driving where they teach you about breaks for a whole semester, you learn about the history of breaks and the materials used to make breaks, after 4 years you graduate with a BSc in Vehicular movement management. Do you need all that knowledge to be able to apply breaks?

A mechanic apprentice can know more about cars than someone with a Mechanical Engineering degree, but the fella with the degree would be more favoured to get a job. I’m sure if I sat in a cock-pit with a pilot for 30 flights I will be able to fly a plane too.

The first engineers, doctors, accountants etc didn’t have to go to school did they? The man who discovered electricity did not study elect elect. It was all curiosity and practice. Our education gives us an advantage at getting the job but the techniques of any job can be learnt by even people with no formal education.
