The issue is the hand that trained them from birth. If it's you, then, you didn't set the ground rules early enough because they seemed too comfortable around you. A healthy fear for authority is needed for kids/adolescents.

If you didn't raise them, then, what exactly do you do for them? Where are their parents? Seizing their phones is a good measure but doesn't limit them from using their friend's phones but the fact that you at least showed some willpower to discipline them is good

Although, there are now at their puberty and raging hormones phase, you can keep up with the healthy fear stuff. Let them know you won't tolerate promiscuity , bad behaviour or anything that will disgrace the family. No boyfriends till they are in 300L or something (find a
balance that works for you) and there are consequences if they disobey these rules.

Taking away their phones sounds reasonable , at least till they enter the university (this may seem harsh to some other people but it is what it is). That makes them to focus on WAEC, NECO and JAMB. Don't restrict them from having any friends at all but make sure the ones they relate with seem focused on their academics and have good character.

All in all, these are my two cents. I wish you the best because it's never easy dealing with kids at that age, especially with the modern world bullshit going on.

That obsession for certain races is true and I feel it is influenced by porn and the media which gives them distorted views of women. From the onset I try to be the cool uncle by giving them some freedom and encouraging them to the extent that I gave the eldest (who's 21) to be free and if she is to have a boyfriend let her bring him home and introduce him to the family so that we could relate with him, let him be aware of what he is getting himself into and the consequences should anything happened her.

I discuss all this in the presence of the 14 and 16 Niece, to let them know that they should calm down that once they come of age it's all good. But what was the outcome?

About the phone, this is not the first time of seizing phone, I take it and give them back after some days or weeks depending on the offence. I try been their friends and I don't think that approach would work.
