The Federal Government alongside the governments of the 36 states are considering the creation of state police.

This followed an emergency meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday.

Thursday’s meeting follows the recent hike in food prices, economic hardship, and pockets of insecurity recorded nationwide.

Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained that the process is still in its infancy and would only take shape after more deliberations between stakeholders.

He said, “There is also a discussion around the issue of state police. The federal government and the state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police.

Of course, this is still going to be further discussed. A lot of work has to be done in that direction. But if our government and the state governments agree to the necessity of having state police, this is a significant shift.

Like I said, more work needs to be done in that direction. A lot of meetings will have to happen between the Federal Government and dissolved nationals to see the modalities of achieving this.”

The debate for the creation of state police in Nigeria primarily stems from the centralised nature of the Nigerian Police Force, which is perceived by many as inadequate for addressing the unique security challenges across the country’s diverse regions.

Proponents argue that the outfit would bring law enforcement closer to the communities they serve, enhance the effectiveness of policing, and allow for more localised control over security matters.

However, those who are against the idea fear that state police could lead to abuse of power, particularly in states with strong political control, potentially exacerbating regional tensions and undermining national unity.

The minister also revealed that the government will recruit a yet-to-be-disclosed number of personnel to “improve the numeric strength of forest rangers. To train them so that they can keep our forests and our borders very safe.”

Will the states be able to fund their police force?

That is one leg od it. The other leg is to allow private security force.

This we can be sure of efficient services. Jonathan used South African private security outfit to get more result.

That may be prone to espionage but local forces can take care of that

A bitter sweet situation .

Given that state police will be a force multiplier to the few federal police personnel, it will also engender home grown solutions to local problems best understood and handled by indigenes of a locality.

However, the fear of abuse and state capture of such security institutions to oppression political opponents is sacrosanct.

The federating units must bring out a near perfect blueprint to govern the modus operandi of such organ to prevent abuse.

The priority now should be our collapsing economy. If Nigeria continues to earn less forex with increased unemployment and scarcity of food, state police will be effort in futility because crime rate will surge. Greatest security is food security. First thing first. Develop plan to fix our economy and start implementing ASAP. Thank you.

A state police will be as good as its state. Are you telling me that a state like Lagos won't be able to equip and adequately fund its police?

I am totally in support of state police. It won't stop the federal police from existing but policing should be from community up.

No state police without total resource control by states. Most states cannot even pay civil servants without federal allocations let alone asking them to add the police to their payroll.

yes. States already have their vigilante groups but they only problem I that the Nigerian government do not allow them to operate at maximum capacity hence their failure in containing the insecurity within the state.

In today's Nigeria, when it comes to the issues of Insecurities (Banditry), most of the police men are equals to or less than the civilians. Is like they are not going under any training before they are employed. The only thing they can do best is collecting bribes on the roads or when civil case is report to them.

Without proper training, equipment and strong measures to brought the corrupt ones to the book even if L.G police will be created, Nigerian police can't tackles any Insecurities.

Good one

If this is true and genuine with no inhibitions whatsoever. The state police will be able to use state of the art firearms and can prosecute criminals with no influence from the federal government whatsoever

Yes,It will be a good one and I will commend Tinubu on it

That is if they have no restrictions whatsoever.

Because the mini state policing we are doing in Oyo state (Amotekun) is working and working very very well. All it's need is an upgrade

But we wait and see

We wait and see

That's why I voted for Asiwaju, talk and do president.
I said it on another thread, this is the right time to restructure Nigeria. There's so much Hunger and Anger in the Land.
I'm sure Government can use this very narrow time-frame to carry out massive restructuring and justify it with the need for reduced Government expenses.
I read the Ministry of Power saying Nigeria is subsiding Power with 450 billion every month,I expect Asiwaju to push a bill to the National Assembly and allow all the states in Nigeria generate and distribute power, Asiwaju should use the excuse of removing the Power subsidy to give power licenses to all the states.
Asiwaju must also restructure the state to becomes more financially dependent on their natural resources,he should push a bill allowing states to control 50% of whatever is mined or drilled in the state and remit 50% to the center,he can start with all natural resources except oil.
Oil producing states are already collecting 13% he can increase it to 30%,while making sure the remaining 70% is shared with the remaining non oil producing states and the federal government.
If anyone ask questions he should use the excuse of the hardship in the country.
Finally the issue of STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT POLICE,I totally support Asiwaju on this, it's a must he allows all states establish their own police force.
This is the best time to restructure Nigeria, like the saying goes,we can't continue to do the same thing and expect a different result,we have been sharing crude oil revenue since 1956 when crude oil was discovered in olorobi the present day Bayelsa state, but yet Nigeria is no longer stagnant but regressing.
We need to do things differently quickly if we are expecting a different result.
God bless Asiwaju
God bless Nigeria.....

The fear of abuse is where you have the federal courts and the supreme court in the first place. If a state is using its police for anything other than justice, people can take the police to the higher courts just like any other institutions. But Nigeria just like to copy other systems without looking at its own local situation

Decentralising policing is a good idea but I have a few concerns. One, state governors would use it as an instrument of oppression against opposition, secondly it may showcase nepotism and tribalism especially when there's a case between an indigene of a state and non-indigene( there may not be fairness and justice not served). Thirdly, the way Nigeria is heading to; police officers families may become targets by the supposed criminals. Instead of state police, I would suggest Geo- political policing using the 6 geopolitical zones as federating units where the officers would posted interchangeably. Also funding should not be the exclusive of the state governors.

That one mean say na State Governor go determine who live or dies, not to talk of who contests elections or not. This one na extra tool for political oppression for Governors.

Long overdue.

The State government should however tell them to respect the citizens. We have had enough harassment from the fed, the state should'nt add to it.
