States usually have annual budget for the operation of their affairs,,

They have their State IGR which is totally different from Federal IGR,,

They receive security votes in trillions of Naira,,

They receive allocations from the FG,,

They also take loans,,

What have they used it achieve?

Rather, especially in the North, they use those monies to fund terrorism in other to receive more allocations for security and to give excuses on why they're backward in terms of growth and development!!

Chai..

My argument is this;

Whatever will make devolution of powers to work means that the governors and all other leadership position holders must be serious with their job and take the welfare of the people as paramount - more like near absolute repentance from corruption.

Hence, there wouldn't even be need to decentralize power in first place if they can do as stated above.

Because, the end will be like - making the governors richer and more powerful by "dissolving corruption at the middle to institutionalize it in States - with the governors holding powers to do and undo".

That same corruption and backwardness will continue.

Whatever will happen in devolution of powers can still happen as it is right now!!

Chai..

"...dissolving corruption at the middle to institutionalize it in States - with the governors holding powers to do and undo".

The above by you suggested that you have little to no idea of what true and fiscal federalism is all about.
The present unitary government system has failed woefully and institutionalized a dole system and laziness among all in Nigeria. The regional government system Nigeria used to have was a million times better than this unitary government system.
Even in advanced democracies, official corruption exists, but it's minimum because the leaders are close to the led and therefore called to account for their actions in office.
But in this unitary government system in Nigeria, politicians in Abuja are too far away from the led, the official corruption in Abuja thus infested those in the states and local government levels.

As we are at the moment I don't think any system would work because the average Nigerian is criminal-minded and would simply use any opportunity he has to amass wealth for himself.

Local government Full autonomy is the best way to go.

Let local government chairmen handle their allocation and devoid of any form of approval from the state governors.
Re: Economic Crisis: Obasanjo Urges Devolution Of Power, Resources To States by benjaminlawson(m): 1:47pm On Feb 25
This is what some people are advocating for, and our respected leader, Baba Obasanjo has also supported it, but personally I have some reservation about this, our state governors have constituted themselves as terror in our nation, let look at what happened during covid 19, where they hoard palliative meant for the people, they gave them money to share to people, they sat on it and many of them diverted it to their private account. During elections they have hijacked all political powers, that if they did not support you, you can't be anything in this country from president to ordinary counselor. They always gang up against the progress of our country.

People like you are the masses that are very easy to catch like mumu.

You don't know the extent that corruption has eaten deep in Nigeria.

If the regional system of government will be closer to the people, are you now saying that the led will be sitting right there with them in their offices?

We're talking based on our different line of experiences. I have had the opportunity to work closely with some people, hence I feel so sorry for people like who don't know anything.

The point is:

It would be a disastrous waste no matter the system of government we implement right now without reorientation and absolute repentance.

Your abusive manner in a public discourse suggests that you need the orientation you prescribed for Nigerians, before powers get to be devolved closer to the people in a pluralistic country like Nigeria.
Sharing proceeds from crude oil has failed Nigeria. Why do you want to stick to a failed experiment?

Is there any assurance that the governors too are not monumental failures and thieves?

None of those hooligans think about you.

Except a state like Lagos and the FCT that we can categorically affirm their spirit for constant progressive initiatives and better outlook to success than others, simply because of their status to the country.

Corruption is almost impossible to completely exterminate in the Nigerian political atmosphere, but it is possible to curtail it to the barest minimum.

I shake my head in dismay when I pass through some States during road travel;

"all you see are chaff houses, very poor environment and setting, wretched living situation, and emptimess that you'll be depressed to ask if this is the so-called Nigeria that they say is blessed with abundance crude oil and so many other natural resources!!?"

The environments look like 400BCE, which is absolutely devoid of any contact with the reality of what a present day 2024 should be.

Chai..

It will be extraordinarily suicidal to believe that devolution of power is what we need.

I'm sure many will run to their respective religious abode to share Divine Testimonies when the Block of Corruption favours them.

This is my problem with people like this. Always smart and knows what's right and good outside power. But when they are in, they do the opposite. It's easy to drive a car with mouth. If na plan, even the Agulu fraud get am plenty - that one can literally write a complete, nonsense consumption to production storybook while sucking Aisha's sagged breasts cheesy. But check what he did in Anambra for 8 years - zero doings; just talks.

Same with Baba Iyabo - why you no execute devolution of power while in power?

Same with our Information minister - Bosun. That one was one of the biggest critics of APC/Buhari/Tinubu over the years. Dem don give am portfolio now, the dude dey do nonsense paparazzi up and down - since becoming minister, Bosun hasn't done any tangible execution of any of plans. I call him the baddie minister.

Enu dun ro efo.

Anyways, I think this is a chess game between the North and South. Since the north has been moving mad since Tinubu came to power, Obasanjo might be coming out to fire the warning shot - the North are scared of true Federalism. This is OBJ having Tinubu's back - even though they are sworn political enemies, the region's interest comes first. When I tell people that the SW plays the most sophisticated politics in Nigeria, they argue. The thing is in the SW, politics isn't by cussing, chest beating, and being loud. Silent chess moves without confrontation - something the SE should learn about - but they won't and will never attain such level of sophistication - at least not this generation, and that's if they don't program their children with the same politics of hate and victimization that has relegated them to the back seat of national influence and power. The typical Igbo is programmed to suck at National politics right from birth. Abuse me all you want; that's the truth.

To confirm their hypocrisy: They will come on this thread (even quote me) that they don't need the power seat of Nigeria; act like they care less. But na them carry ObiFraud for head pre and post election. Even those who abused Obi and called him a failure pre 2015 turned around to repackage him. Na them spend #800m on post election legal tussles for Obi. Na them dey always argue say their 3rd class failure was a First Class Omo Olodo'de cool at the election.

Ezi Bida. Obj is advising BAT you carry your mumu tribe mantra come empty vessel.

You don't understand anything about structural organization. The structure maximizes results even if the people's performance doesn't improve. BTW behaviour will change, and I will give you a simple example; once you move resource control to the states you will have revolutionized the economic options states have, even if it is driven by greed some states will exploit some of those resources. Restructuring will allow us to move from one oil revenue stream to at least 2. Even if only one state begins to exploit local mineral resources that is more money and prosperity(there is no way the politicians will steal literally 100% of what is generated, the same way they don't with oil). So even if Nigeria remains exactly as corrupt by simple virtue of restructuring there will be noticeable improvement.

themanderon:

I don't understand people like this, if you think that way about Nigerians then surely you must think there is no hope, why then do you even bother discussing our politics?
