when there is no money you don't feel the pain for too long. I recently lost a friend here in England after series of chemotherapy, at a point my friend refused going for chemo and started growing back lost hairs. The pain was always excruciating, assuming there was no money this friend would have died years ago ( perhaps we wouldn't have met) but seeing the lifeless body with teary eyes after all the pain, I just went home and got myself a 120pound scotch, cos I couldn't grieve with my clear eyes

I am doctor and treated sickle cell patients for more than 25 years right from Nigeria.
His words of encouragement is good but it is much more complex and not as easy as he said it.

The severity of the illness varies and does not respect rich and poor because I have treated patients from both sides.The only difference is the rich have access to healthcare.The mortality is very high sadly for both due to the boone pain crisis,infection ,avascular necrosis of femur bone and multiple complications.

Some patients ,the ones with heterogeneous genotype like SC,SD, etc usually have less crises,may not fall ill until they face major life issues like pregnancy, job stress,relationships which cause them to be ill.

However,the well known type,SS,typically manifest by the 4th to 5th year of life.The stress on families is beyond this world.I have seen families that refuse to train the children because they believe they would not live long.
I have seen families lose 2 to 4 children in the same family.Sickle cell is one of the rare conditions that children can suffer with stroke( CVA) which typically an adult issue.

The severity and frequency of the pain
crisis varies from one person to another and the guy,Adekunle Gold should count himself fortunate.

Let's not forget that sickle cell has different haplotypes: Bantu, Benin, Senegal, Cameroon and Arab-Indian.The most severe sickle cell haplotype is Bantu.

So in essence, it is possible that Adenkunle has one of the milder variants and hence not prone to sickle cell complications

That being said let to-be-couples do proper blood tests to ascertain their compatibility medically so as to stop the birthing of Ss children.

It's really a painful ordeal for those who experience it!

There is a large variation in how sickle cell impacts people. Some people are constantly sick and have regular crises and some are hardly sick at all. I know a case of a guy who did not even know he was sickle cell, till he want to get checked when he and his then fiancé were planning on getting married. He was shocked at the result of his test as he hardly gets sick.

I am from a poor home, never knew about my sickle condition till I got admitted to higher institution. I do things like other people except that I dare enter rain like other children. Till now I am yet to visit hospital because i am scared of knowing about any terminal diseases. But I know one thing for sure, I am as fit as fiddle. Nothing do me.
