This is for igbos to think about. Since EEDC power distribution company was purchased by Emeka offor, the power situation in the south east has not improved.

The company frustrated and bankrupted geometric in court. If not Geometric would have started power supply to Aba years ago.

The owner of the company is not patriotic to Ndiigbo and not willing to make the needed investments needed to improve power supply to the south east.

This is why I propose that we should finance geometric to purchase EEDC.

If geometric purchases EEDC, they can build power plants and distribute locally to different municipalities in the south east.

Think about it.

I don’t hate Emeka offor but he needs to move into other business and leave power distribution.

His greed delayed Geometric power from starting because he insisted that Aba ring fenced area was included in his purchase. At some point even obi of Onitsha thankfully had to step into the matter. Thank God Geometric came out successfully from the case but they became bankrupt because of it.

If I was Emeka offor, I would have never let it go on that far because my love for Ndiigbo is greater than my personal greed.

Dumb economics, purchase what’s already built why not add to it. Besides is the light situation in south East different from other parts of the country? Aba alone deserve 24 hours power other south East states should be managing the national grid for now. If we all pull out of the national grid it isn’t in our best interest let Aba be the industrial hub let Emeka be managing the rest of south East

You don’t have to hate on a business man defending his market, you would do same in his shoes

So you want manufacturing hubs like Nnewi, Onitsha, to remain with national grid. You must be insane.

Okay what is stopping EEDC from building embedded power generation plants for those cities. They have the laws on their side but they are not doing it.

Discos now have the power to also generate. That’s what Barth Nnaji did.

His company Goemetric generates and distributes

What is stopping his from raising financing or partnering with other companies to do what Barth Nnaji did in Aba. There are millions of igbos both home and abroad that will help finance EEDC to start building power plants all over the south east.

Nothing is stopping Emeka offor. He needs to step aside and let someone else do it if he doesn’t want to do it.

sometimes you guys enjoy talking off point. EEDC is a distribution company. We need and off grid generating company. If our investors can invest on power plant and south east can generate 10k megawatts at least, we should be able to improve the economy of the region. But in Nigeria, corruption is more lucrative than hardwork.

Business is about calculation. I don’t even see Onitsha and Nnewi as manufacturering hub so let’s not go that far, Onitsha is a commercial hub same as Nnewi. When you factor in the cost of building a plant and close to a billon $ you will it is better to continue with the national grid. I may have hurt your ego by classifying Onitsha and Nnewi as commercial hub rather than industrial hub but for now that’s the situation. Aba will be producing while Onitsha and the rest will be distributing fir now it is not like there’s something you can do to change the reality for at least the next 10 years

Have you ever run a successful business, why not you start the project and see who will support you. A business man seeking public fund do you know how embarrassing that sounds. He has the bigger market, south East is not pulling out from the national grid entirely, when we pull out others will have stable electricity while we fund our own nonsense let everyone enjoy the epileptic light while Aba enjoys the special city status

Businessmen both in Nigeria and all over the world always seek funds to expand their businesses. Even Dangote refinery sought funds from various institutions and individual investors.

Many of us don't know the details of what happened between Emeka Offor and Geometric Energy. I thought it was Emeka Offor's fault, but it wasn't. It's the fault of some useless government officials who don't care about making a mess of the country. They are just after money.... people like VP Namadi Sambo who supervised that privatisation under Goodluck Jonathan.

Here's the summary of the saga

Before privatisation, the federal government gave Geometric Energy the license to ring-fence parts of Abia State and supply power to them.

During the privatisation of the power distribution subindustry, BPE concessioned the entire SE distribution network to Emeka Offor, not minding that some parts of Abia State were already concessioned to Geometrics.

That's why the two brothers went to court to settle the issue and it took years to be settled. Thankfully, Emeka Offor's license to own EEDC has even expired. All discos licenses expired last November, and electricity has been moved to the concurrent list.

The truth is, the whole power dynamics is complicated now, but I hope that state governments will start building their own power stations, especially states that can use gas or water to generate power. We cannot continue to do less than 5k megawatts. It's disgraceful!

Berth should not think of going public in Nigeria.

If the bolded part is true that’s the best news I have heard this year.

This will unlock so many things regarding power generation in the south east.

Inasmuch I am not a fan of Emeka Offor, I see no sense in your suggestion.

what will propel energy sector growth and development in the south east is competition not monopoly. Favouring Geometric will bring monopoly. Same monopoly that made EEDC complacent.
Igbo investors should get licenses, build power plants and EEDC will sit up and start their own.

That's how to grow energy sector in a free market economy.

They were given a 10-year licence. However, when the news broke that the licenses have expired, a rejoinder was issued, stating that their licence was extended by 5 years.

https://tribuneonlineng.com/discos-given-15-years-license-not-10-nerc/

The power dynamics is complicated now and should be unbundled state by state.

In fact, even discos owe banks billions of naira (the debt is close to one trillion naira) because they have been crying that they are just incurring losses since they were given the licence to distribute power.

Who will pay all the money they owe banks? grin

How is it discos are owing that much apart from lackadaisical attitude and shear wickedness of some Nigerians to pay for electricity?

Good point, time for Igbos to start investing in power sector to make 24/7 electricity for our indigenous industries and residential areas a reality.

You guys forget that gas supply for power plants in Nigeria is erratic.

The best bet, in my opinion, is to activate the coal mines in Enugu. Igbo and other investors ( like ENBW or Eeon Germany or any other from North America), can build coal powered plants that can supply electricity to the whole South East, and export the excess to neighboring states.

This is a long term sustainable power source for Igboland. Thousands of people will be employed by the coal mines.

The distribution company (EEDC owned by Emeka offor) will not allow it to happen.

That’s why I said since they won’t allow it, why don’t they generate and distribute. My problem is that they are just sitting there doing nothing. They will only wake up once another company tries to do what Barth Nnaji did.

It’s almost like they are enemy of progress. That’s my problem.

You didn't disappoint, but soon you will understand. Even illiterate deserve decorum, I was trying to tickle you so you come out from where you hiding. Onitsha is not an industrial hub rather a commercial hub, Aba is known for producing shoes, clothes and now electricity. Mention one thing Onitsha is known to produce. Just one. Onitsha is a commercial hub, but for industry Aba is number one in AlaIgbo. Don't even argue it.
