Who told you it was laziness on any ones part?
The way our parents trained us during our time is quite different from what you guys had that lacked the involvement of your parents who left you to figure things out yourself.

My Mom did it till we came off age and while we were very tender, she made sure we were always around her whenever she was cooking. She made us hand her things in the kitchen and that was how we learnt what goes in first and lastly into the food so it was easy for us when we took over the kitchen at that Early age.

One thing you should understand about training a child is catching them young. Even the bible says, train up a child so when he is OLD he'll never depart from it. Which means you have to start early before distraction sets in and the child looses interest and refuses to do anything. As I dey lecture you now make you dey learn and not to just be opening that your buca cavity and be talking anyhow on my post.

What happened to 13 and above? 9 is just not necessary abeg. It is needless. If you check now, it's poor parents that push their child to do things beyond their years, because the parents cannot afford to graft alone. Poverty and laziness. Be a parent and stop pushing your child into adult situations.

Most little girls always show curiosity anyway. It is your duty as a parent to let them cook what is age appropriate.

Fine tune kor. I can imagine what you'll be cooking in the name of fine-tuning. I'm sure it will be no different from the lady in the post that claims she can only cook for herself.

Culinary skills require some training from your mother take it or live it. All this things you guy watch in YouTube is nothing but concocted poison. Learn the local and traditional way of cooking meals.

Culinary skillls can be gotten from any seasoned adult. Are orphans not cooking?

So poverty determines the age a child begins to cook now?

Shasha... How are you?
You need to grow up.

Oyinbo children cook at the age of 6 you'll call it great skills but black man does the same you call it poverty. That is because you have a poverty mentality.

For your info, I was born into a well to do family and my dad brought us up in the poshest areas in ikoyi. I'm not sure you know what it means to raise children up to university level with a full-time house wife in the 80s in ikoyi. Where were your parents then?

I'm not from a poor home. Never you attach poverty to my childhood or me as a person again.

Grow up

Not a big deal. Cooking can be learnt as long as she is teachable, malleable and willing to learn. I will pick someone with a great character over great cooking skills because the latter can be learnt. If she is enrolled in a cooking school and given an intense drill, under a year, she will surpass you even.

Nobody was born a good cook, we all learned and got better through consistent practice. I never was a good cook either because I did not grow up with my mother for the most part of my life. Although, I could cook my traditional cuisines and soups, but it still never matched up. I took it with levity because I was lazy at the time and felt cooking was too overwhelming, so I never bothered to get better.

Over the years, I began to find my poor cooking skills a great concern. I mean, I am from Akwa-Ibom and it is a CURSE in our place to be average in the kitchen. I could not leave myself being stuck with eating JUST soups or traditional foods. It was beginning to be a bore. I enrolled in a cooking school later on and presently, there is nothing I cannot cook so well. I mean, exceedingly well. All kinds of local and international cuisines combined. So, you see? It can be learnt. Quit creating a mountain out of a molehill.

Unfortunately, you're not alone in this world. The idea of learning to cook for a man is not even as important as learning for the sake of your kids. Children go through a lot psychologically. Not knowing how to cook will bring them nothing but more trauma. They would always have to hide your bad food from their peers, especially those in boarding schools who ought to eagerly anticipate your food during visiting days. Moreover, knowing how to cook is one of the most adorable and attractive skills you can acquire as an aspiring wife and mother. It gives everyone around you a sense of safety and care. Makeup skills do not give such feelings.

A lady is trending online after cooking rubbish for her family claiming she only knows how to cook for herself.

Heres what her family has to say and peoples reaction to what she cooked.

Meanwhile it is very important to start teaching a girl child how to cook quite early in life. By age 9 I've started cooking. As in.. I'll go to the market then obalende market after returning from school o, we would go with a small list and buy soup items, come and still prepare it on my Moms directives. Family food o.

By the time I was ten, I no longer needed assistance. Once you're coming back from school just know you're the one going to the market and because I love food a lot it's me they'll always send to that market if I like make I knack my head for wall my Mom will tell you when you're done scattering everywhere, the money is behind the table clock waiting for you. Chai! Then I saw it as punishment but today I'm glad for the culinary skills I have.
For me I will say she's very dull. With all technology present now. I think no human should say he or She can't cook atleast something someone can comfortably eat. In this present day. To know how to cook you just need internet and your a mobile device.

Cooking is a life skill that should be learned by every gender.

That said, mocking her was unnecessary... It's not a crime for someone not to know how to cook. You simply teach her... It's not difficult to learn, except the interest is not there.

That's like me mocking my fellow man for not knowing how to drive... Makes no sense.

This family that she could not cook for has a mother and father. So who is to blame if an adult did not learn to cook? Cooking is not a skill that comes naturally. It has to be taught. I suspect the mother may not be taht good a cook either. Because at the very least children will imitate what their parents do at a young age.

It is important to teach a girl child how to be morally upright, disciplined, respectful and well behaved before teaching her how to cook.

I find it appalling that people place more emphasis on the culinary skills of a girl than her behavior. I have seen mothers brag that they raised their daughters well because they taught them how to cook. Cooking is just a skill which anyone can learn.

Have you ever wondered why 'runs girls' and 'ladies of easy virtues' are great cooks? Because their mothers were teaching them how to cook instead of teaching them how to be morally upright.

I'd rather be proud to have a well disciplined girl child that is a bad cook than have a female child that is a good cook but wayward in her behavior.

She did nothing wrong, if she cannot cook doesn't mean she is useless, there are a lot of other things she can do apart from cooking. Who cooking help?

If she was one of my girlfriends, she don't need to cook, i would do the cooking myself. I don't trust SOME women's cooking anyway. Not even my women.

If she cannot cook, fine! we go eat out, or go to Burger King or KFC tongue. This story is fake anyway.

@Sharon, there are lots of kids 5yrs, 6yrs+ at that age doing wonders. If you watch food Network, you'll see how these kids display the talents and when you hear their stories, most of them learnt from their parents and grandparents.

@jewessgratitude is absolutely spot on . Kids need to learn early and organically too. This applies to boys and girls. For me , I think it's better to learn the basics from parents or any adult close by before embarking on skills from social media . Nothing can replace traditional methods.

During which time? You're older than me, abeg cheesy tongue. But I get you smiley. I wouldn't blame social media, though. It's actually the more reason why no one should have any excuse why they can't cook —because of all the information out there. I wouldn't blame their parents either. I think anyone old enough should take the initiative to learn how to cook for themselves, especially if they like to eat, lol. I eat out but there's nothing as satisfying as cooking my own meals. It's really just a matter of using one's common sense and creativity.

Spot on, I remember always cooking rubbish whenever I cooked stew in campus then, and my room mates would mock me.

I could only cook beans, and I luckily got it very right only once, that all my room mate ate of it.

As time went by, I started getting better, until I went through YouTube videos and became a guru.

Right now despite being a male, I can cook very delicious tomato stew, egusi, edikang ikong soup, Ogbono soup, and Ofe 'Nsala, while closing my eyes.

I'm going to perfect Banga during this leave period too.

Those kids on those shows are not the average white kid, that's why they're on TV.

White parents will typically let their 9 year old bake cakes, cookies, muffins at most. Baking is safe. But cooking for their entire family at unsupervised at 9?! What will the kid even cook? White people usually eat light and simple.

I agree with her aswell. I just don't think a 10 year old needs to cook for her entire family. That's extra. And I still maintain that it's laziness and poverty on the parents part.

Is 13 not early enough?
