You have only one name and means of identity...! So, it should be 'my name is'! Saying my names are means you have multiple identities. |

ify2016:My name is Umuinyioku Oji Okpala. Not are because of other names. Pluralism could come in if we are two persons with different identity. Unfortunately, Pastors and Religious clerics have given different meaning and identity during crusades by emphasising multiplicity of names during such exercise. Even though it's a singular person. |

My name is the correct way. Come to think of it. If another person is introducing you, he or she will never say these are Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu instead it's done this way, this is Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Gbam |

Dzzzz:You are just using power to explain nothing. Question is "My names are or My name is"? Which one is correct? There is nowhere in the question where it asked "our names are:". |

webincomeplus:They are not clowns You think you know everything With that kind of attitude you never learn By convention in Britain they do not say my names are. That is British English In Nigerian English it is an emerging trend that is not going away Is there such a thing as Nigerian English? Definitely. Just like there are American ,Australian,Indian and South African variants E.g Indians say Cousin Brother Nigerians say Next tomorrow and the hearer and speaker understand each other So.let me burst that bubble NIGERIANS ARE NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS As long as Americans qualify to be called Native speakers We just speak a different type or variant British English does not use the word GOTTEN and many other Americanisms that they find annoying Who said it is only Americans that have the right to annoy them Personally I won't say my names are but I encourage and endorse it as a Nigerianism Interestingly it is used in other African countries |

ify2016:It is a compound noun even if you have a million name it doesn't matter the correct way is my name is. There was this deputy director in Bayelsa state civil service that came to represent the commissioner during my NYSC orientation camp back in the day. He introduced himself by saying my names are, and that was the end of his speech he was booed heavily the NYSC officials couldn't stop the corps members that was how he left in shame. |

kay29000:Why is it nonsense.? Because it grates on your ears? Language is dynamic We hear words like Woke Sick Gay That have changed in meaning over time Many Brits are irritated with the way Americans use English but that is the nature of language Once upon a time they used to say . Knoweth not thou So you say something started 10 years ago and it is still happening. That means it is going nowhere That is the nature of language evolution In my lifetime Americans changed the meaning of GAY for everyone from HAPPY to HOMOSEXUAL. Whether anyone likes it or not it is a fait accompli It is here to stay like JANGOLOVA |

Only an idiòt will say "my names are..........." I get pissed off whenever I hear it, the most annoying of them all are those that introduce themselves like this:- 1st Person:- What is your name? 2nd Person:- By the grace of God my names are Chukwuma Ciroma Adekunle. |
| Re: “My Name Is” Or “My Names Are” Which Is Correct? by omoadeleye(m): 12:01pm On Mar 05, 2024 |
The correct phrase is "My name is." This is used when introducing oneself or stating one's name; it is singular because a person usually has only one given name or commonly goes by one name in most contexts. "My names are" would only be correct in a situation where someone is listing multiple names they go by, such as a full name along with a nickname, alias, or stage name. However, this is much less common in everyday English. |
