yes, Yoruba people (most of them) even here in Nigeria are fond of that attitude, they start speaking this their ngatti ngatti and once they know you don't understand their language, then you are in for a ride, they will now increase their volume, make life miserable for you. infact if you tell them you are not Yoruba, you are automatically tagged as an omo ibo, even while you try to let them know you are not an igbo guy, they still won't accept, you hear some say, Igbo no ni (it's still igbo), sometimes, i just look at them, shake my head and just pretend as if i don't understand the language.

FYI: I speak Yoruba more than alot of yorubas but i rather peshi first, access the environment before letting them know i can speak it.

eyah- the matter pain your belle sha. Do you cry when they do that?

Your Yoruba must be the wishy washy type, since even your English get k leg like you.

Your life is indeed miserable as we can all see.

The Bini people do it too, but when you ask them: what are you saying? They'll explain it to you.

I'm Ishan so somehow I manage to understand a little Bini. After spending a couple of hours with them, I even assimiliate their accent and intonation. Funny as hell!

I always tell them: why do you guys speak an incorrect Ishan? They reply: The Ishans speak an incorrect Bini! cheesy

The Chinese don't know how to speak English. That one is understandable.
If you are from another tribe,  in the midst of your Yoruba friends, It is simply rude for them to communicate (gist) in Yoruba language. We have both English and Pidgin English. If they feel that they need to communicate informally, they can speak Pidgin English. Except they don't want you to understand them. However, if you don't feel comfortable in their midst, Simply avoid them.
This is not only applicable to Yoruba people. Some Igbos, Hausas and other Nigerian tribes do it too.
That is true

Nigerians and their problems.

When you all start your real time tribal war, be sure to make it clear which side you pick.

As per the buffoon saying I've offended the idiots I insult under any of my ids, you are mad.

File this insult too.

I had similar experience with what op raised. It is even worst than I thought. I can relate to what op was saying. This doesn't call for ethnic bashing rather it is concern for all Nigerians. This isn't peculiar to yorubas alone as other tribes are involved too

You wouldn't understand until go to place where they speak a language you don't understand. It even get worst when they plan to deal with you unknowingly. Probably you don't travel to other parts of Nigeria hence you are stuck in one location

Yoruba are mostly victims of people accusing them they love speaking their language especially here in Lagos. No matter how cosmopolitan Lagos is, it's still a Yoruba city and language and culture are what Yoruba hold the highest esteem. They always try to make people learn and understand their language and assimilate well. Igbo and Hausa are largely spoken in Eastern and Northern cities respectively too, so why the fuss

AloyEmeka9:

There is a big difference between being proud and being rude. What Michelin is complaining is very common among Yorubas. When the person complains, they always rebuff and ask why she cannot speak Yoruba. You will also notice it in Nairaland where someone will start blowing Yoruba in the middle of a thread where all and sundry are contributing. If your love for Yoruba is impeccable and you cannot accommodate any other language, why don't you speak Yoruba to the white people you meet in England or USA?. That is why Yorubas claim others trade their languages for English because they try to be accommodating when someone from another tribe is in their midst. Hausas love their language too as well as igbos but I haven't seen them force it on another who does not understand the language. Does it mean they are not comfortable with their language?

You miss it there. Don't just be making assumption and conclusion like that. I have lived in Igbo land and lived among Hausas . it is peculiar to almost all the tribes. Its only insecurity that can make one susceptible the way op. Ur assumption is premised upon the belief that Lagos is at least heterogenous. Don't forget we have a dominant tribe. I live in a compound that is dominated by Igbos that are not even indigenes. They speak Igbo not minding other tribes. It is even Yoruba that are suppose to be complaining but they shelve theirs. Bros learn to be tolerant if you must live among them. Go to the north, You will see English language being taught in Hausa language. You can't take Hausa language from them for a minute. It is a natural phenomenon. On speaking ur language to the white you miss it there. If a white man comes to African on a purpose and wants efficacy they hire interpreter who will eventually teach them the language. Check the history, most of the African languages are written thanks to effort of whites who deemed it fit to actualise their goal. But if you ho to their land, you will be forced by circumstances to learn and speak their language.

The fact is everyone digs in their heels so arguments keep going in circles.

Just do you and let others do them, people waste time trying to get others to be tolerant.

I have found it's indeed a waste of time, don't ask me how.

And I'm not referring to any specific tribe with this post.

The language is very easy to understand. It is a bit close to English. It is also very 'sweet' to the ears
You can easily learn it.

Yorubas are the worst in this respect.

So educated and well travelled, yet so useless to Civilisation. Extremely fetish and backward. Go to the villages of Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, and Ogun, you will spit at the tribe called Yoruba. This is not about discrimination, it is about saying the truth. You can accept or leave it. It is your cup of tea.

Take this scenario for example. A cannot speak Yoruba. B can speak Yoruba and English. A and B are having a conversation in public in English language, maybe school or workplace. C comes along. C can speak both Yoruba and English also. Cuts into the conversation, with Yoruba, clearly knowing A does not understand Yoruba. Then goes ahead to continue speaking Yoruba with B. A have to excuse them and walk away. As for me, I don't walk away. I change the discussion to another language and raise my voice. Let us all be mad together. At the end of the day, they either switch to English, or they both walk away. Very useless and irritating tribe called Yoruba.
Re: What Is It With The Yorubas And Their Language? by Richfan: 9:52pm On Mar 08
The worst part is they use this method to carry rumours all around. Because you can't hear, you can't object and courtesy demands you smile when you are in a public gathering.

At a point I got upset and isolated myself physically. What was the point of standing there when I couldn't contribute to their conversation? And why should I bother myself to learn your language? Is your yoruba more important than my Esan? Please nor just go there with your tribal centrism. I don't owe any yoruba the effort to learn your language because it doesn't contribute a dime to my life.

I speak my English to contribute on NL, my Italian to school here, my Pidgin to laugh and joke with my fellow Nigerians and my Esan to speak when I am with my parents, so I don't need your yoruba.

I like this comment... because this behaviour annoys me to the bone....we should learn to communicate in a language everyone understands in the public especially when dealing with people we are not used or close to

You know them very well and i find this attitude very discriminatory...At least speak what everyone can understand...

Imagine someone i know going to ante natal in one of the yoruba states and all they do is use yoruba to do seminar with the pregnant woman, even when she raised alarm that she doesnt understand yoruba the lecture didnt listen to her ....thats so bad, lets treat people how we will like to be treated.....yourba people dey other states, where they dont understand the language, if treated like that will they like it?
