To show his hypocrisy, as the present governor of Ebonyi still uses Enugu airport!

Dr. Umahi should have asked the contractor, right there at the inspection site, how much of the contract sum they paid back to the ministry officials and other facilitators as bribes!

Dave Umahi signed off on whoever was awarded the contract. Do not be deceived - this is Nigeria and everyone takes their cut. It is simply an operational expense. It is lazy minded or brief case contractors that will deliver a rubbish job. In the end it is the quality of your work, not the size of your kickback, that will determine future work. No competent administrator wants a project that is an embarrassment 3 months after handover

Did you read the part where the minister said he has had over 10 meetings with them, if they have issues with they should simply speak but, unfortunately they can't, they are not the only construction company that got contracts around the same time, are others not working ?
Don't make excuses for them.

Contracts don't work the way you think.
As a matter of fact they have not even meet the conditions to renegotiate anything

Mkst laymen don't know what contractors go through. Umahi himself knows cause he was a contractor until he became Governor and ironically most of the roads he built with cement are nothing to write home about while he condemns the job of others who are owed after being mobilized with Dollar at 400 Naira.

I agree with him on this one. The guys are not serious at all. They'll work on a particular section of the road for weeks. It's just tiring seeing them in a particular spot for weeks. Sometimes they don't even come to work.

There is always a variation in construction contract as the prices of materials rise in the market. The lead consultant, cost consultant and the contractor will arrive at a percentage of variation to be adopted for every material.
The quality of work should not be affected by this if you are a reputable contractor.

You are trying your best to explain the right thing to someone that is completely dull in addition to pessimism nature. It's going to be an exercise in futility.
Contractors that so many of them have been paid upward years back and they did nothing. The civil servants in the ministry of work are the ones behind these.

Which contract?

Did the same Umahi not commission the white elephant project he built called an airport, with fanfare?

Thank goodness you said he built and commissioned an airport, even as an enemy and bitter loser, you confessed he performed. FOI, not only airport, he also built lots of projects. That man trying to replicate same quality nationwide but you're too insensible and ignorant to understand that. We already see the fantastic job he doing on the third mainland bridge

But are we saying that up till now we don't have an indigenous company to handle construction project? Almost all the roads construction in this country is supervised by foreigners which is not good.

Nigerian graduate engineers are not qualified to handle or supervise such big contracts as their qualification is based on theoretical learnings and nor practical and as such they are only qualified to carry the books and bags of the white engineers while at site.

If you are angry for spelling it out the way I see it then go and hug transformer

Umahi is pontificating for the camera.

There is a force majeur on this project - out of control inflation.

It is a fact and the fact of the matter is other contractors are watching to see how this plays out.

No one is going to go bankrupt on Dave umahis account. More so when he seems to be trying to invoke a racist card.

Is it Umahi that delayed their mobilisation to site?

According to Umahi, they have been mobilised, the contractors apparently delayed and now want to renegotiate the entire contract including what they have already been paid for.

Unless the payments came late, then they have no excuses

He built and commissioned an airport in Ebonyi state but how many flights have landed there?

Why is the present Ebonyi state governor still flying to Enugu airport and completing the journey to Ebonyi by road?

If they can't use it now, they'd use it later. In 10years, population will grow, standard of living will improve and more people will use it.

you think a billion dollar project negotiated when cement was n3500 will run when cement is n11,000?

I guess you will build a factory now, equip it with expensive machinery needed for production, celebrate the opening of the factory and it will make sense to you if the factory is not producing , paying some staff to be cleaning the factory regularly, with you hopibg that in 10 years time, there would be demand and you can then start producing!

Use your brain..

If their mobilisation fee was paid when cement was N3500..
They should have started their work and progress reflects on the timeline of completion of the projects..
When the cost of materials goes up ..once they are within their timeline of the project ..they can sit with the ministry of works to demand more ..

You will not see Julius Berger, RCC or Craneburg behave such way...

That is why when government doesn't meet demands due to project cost far exceeding what was signed..plus they are delivered the portion worth the mobilization fee...they simply abandon the project..

go and see many abandoned projects in Abuja..

Millennium tower, VP lodge, FIRS hq and many more..these were handled by reputable companies.. when they got abandoned..did you see government going to threaten them...

The issue here is ..these shaddy contractors will receive their mobilisation fee and intentionally wait or be sluggish with construction so that they can bid for an increase and cost of materials goes high..

You're shortsighted and that's your problem. If the Governor would attrack a couple of investors to the state, the airport will witness traffick. it'd be useful for future investments alongside growing population. The thread isn't even about ebonyi airport but the quality of work Umahi is determined to achieve going by similar quality of jobs he did as governor but a mischievous individual like you wouldn't understand.

unfortunately, you have not worked in construction. i have. from both sides of the table as clients project manager and as service provider contractor.

contractors are almost never paid variations that are not signed off on. in fact, contractors are almost never paid variations - period. no one wants to pay beyond the project sum. and they often want to gold plate .

as the contractor you will be pushed by the project manager, and when project is done and you need your variation payment, the PM will not return your calls or your emails.

the story then becomes - dont worry chief - we will give you another project to make up for this loss.

i know exactly what umahi is doing - he is trying to bully the contractor into taking the loss

one of the reasons the lagos badagry expressway project that was supposed to be completed in 2014 and was funded by the world bank but is now somehow funded by LASG is because the dollar was devalued in 2011/2012. the contractors running the project now are CCECC. CCECC are the among cheapest in the industry, but they DO NOT DO VARIATIONS.

you are reading how different companies are declaring massive losses because of devaluation. the variation is enough to kill the contractor id they are not a very large enterprise. Umahi does not have any relationship with the vendor and he is displaying very poor vendor management skills

laymen such as yourself may be wowed by his tactics - but they will only work with inexpereienced contractors or conractors who are trying to get their foot in the door and ready to take the loss for the exposure.
