I saw a post on Facebook days back talking about experiences of people living in some neighborhood especially some estates in Abuja and everybody's I don't care attitude towards their neighbor and I thought to bring the topic here for your contributions.

A particular guys experience made me feel bad. He said he escorted his girlfriend who had come to visit him to the bus stop to board a taxi home. On getting to his compound gate, he knocked and knocked but no one came to open the gate even though he could see them through the small opening on the gate. Unfortunately for him, his phone was in his apartment and his girlfriend's family were calling him to inform him that the girl had an accident on her way home.

Las Las, he had to pass the night at a friend's place with only boxers and singlet he was putting on. On getting to his house Early the next morning, he saw a lot of mixed calls from the girls family, he called back and tried to explain but they didn't want to hear. He packed out of the compound one week later as he couldn't come to terms with the fact that his neighbours could be so mean.

Personally, I can't relate because some years ago in our former compound, I was in labour and my husband was not around, he called our landlord and he drove me in his car to the hospital. May God continue to bless him, he is such a good man

What specie of human wears singlet and boxers to the bus stop? undecided

It's good he packed out. He should relocate to the village, city life ain't for him.

Trust me, you have a very good landlord. May God continue to bless him. I can't forget in a hurry one of the most horrific experiences I had.

A friend of mine ( of blessed memory)who travelled abroad came back and needed a place to stay. As bachelor wey I be, I accommodated him because I felt it would be a waste of money for him to lodge in a hotel for like 2 months. On that fateful day, I went to see my parents and called this my friend that I may come back late, so he should please be on the lookout in case the gate is locked.

Unfortunately for me, my phone ba3 died and unknowing to me, this my friend had gone out but put my key somewhere for me because according to him, he had been trying to reach out to me, but my phone was off. To cut the long story short, I came back around 10pm and was knocking and knocking at the gate for like 3 hours and no one came to open. Around 1am or so, I had to scale the fence because I didn't have any friend close by and I didn't want to go back home to my parents because it was very dangerous at that time of the day with robbery incidents and all and also because I was a bit drunk due to "several issues "I was facing at the time.

So back to my story, na so I scale fence o and slept in front of my door because I didn't know that my friend kept the key for me. I thought he mistakenly took it with him. Around 3am or so, that was how I felt a sharp pain on my back . I didn't know my neighbours or landlord had gone to call OPC vigilante and also the police that a thief broke into the compound. Na so them start to molest me o. Honestly, I cried that day, not because of the pain, but because of the denial and embarrassment I got.

I vowed never to give birth in that compound even if I marry because it made me to realise the kind of people I was living with. Imagine coming at 10pm and nobody responds at all despite using force and even stones to hit the gate to get attention. See ehn, I DONT CARE neighbours are in abundance. They just only care about themselves and I learnt a very big lesson that day.

Suffice to say the police that came were reasonable and very understanding and never molested me, but the OPC vigilante people that used the side of cutlass to be flogging me. I had my revenge on the perpetrators exactly a year after and they also pleaded with me and we settled, but that's a story for another day !

These types of neighbours full Abuja.

You'd live in a compound where you wouldn't know your next door neighbour's name or what he does for a living.

Sometimes it can be as bad as not greeting/ talking to each other and no be say Una dey quarrel oo.

I no know who introduced this Yankee bs here. angry

That’s why I’m always having my keys on me 247 because my neighbors won’t even answer your greetings talk more of greeting you back and I love it that way!

You really sabi them. I had never lived in such kind of environment before where every man is either envious of their fellow man or rather just plain inconsiderate with this "I don't care" attitude. Never again am I going to experience that again. God will definitely bless me to complete my own. So unfortunate. Pumping machine go spoil and your "so called " neighbours will just act like they don't care. We all share prepaid metre and when it is one person's turn, they act like it's non of their business. People are wicked o. Honestly speaking

I swear babe. I can't wait for my rent to be due so that I leave this wicked environment. The energy and vibes is very negative. The funny thing is they all claim to be " christain" and church-goers. I won't belittle any tribe or religion but I stayed a bit in the North and there are things an hausa man wouldn't do. They are their neighbour's keeper. Over here, it is just unhealthy competition and unnecessary rivalry

You can't blame the neighbours completely because alot of security challenges we're facing in this country.

I once heard of an incidence where a neighbour was used to rubb from his neighbour. What happened was, the armed rubber got access to a flat in the compound, got hold of the man in the house, with gun on his head, he was asked to lead them to his neighbours flat. He knocked on his neighbours door, requesting that the neighbour should help him with something, unknowingly to the neighbour armed rubbers where behind the neighbour knocking. Only for him to open the door for the neighbour and he was rubbed. So imagine!

So to be on the save side, when you're new in a compound, it won't cost you anything to get to know your fellow neighbours and get their phone numbers. And when leaving your flat, far or near, never leave without your keys and phone. Because even me, i won't open door for anybody in the night if I'm not expecting anybody.

Add neighbors who shut their eyes and ears when a neighbor is being physically or verbally abused by a spouse to the lists of I don't care neighbors out there. Include those colleagues at work or play who do nothing when oga or madam assaults one of their own at work or outside. Even your friend in the OP may be one of them, the I don't care neighbors . lipsrsealed

You are all blaming your own carelessness and I don't care attitude on the neighbors.
Who sees his girlfriend off in just boxers and singlet without his phone or gate key or wallet?
Who accommodates someone else in the house without having 2 keys to your apartment?
You would be going about without phones or with dead phones and now be knocking gate waiting for the houseboy whey you put for the next flat to come and open the gate. Many of you are mad I swear

I saw the FB posts too, the one that got to me among the posts was the pregnant lady who crawled to the stairs screaming for help who ended up dying as a result of those kind of neighbour's who heared a shout but didn't respond and people said that's how it is in Abuja.

I don't understand the one of not greeting or not replying greeting. How will you not greet your neighbor?

I have my new neighbors number she has mine.
Her hubby is in Obodo so we don't have his number he came home briefly once and personally came to greet my husband when he saw him in the compound.
she doesn't have my husband's number too.

The 2 females do the communication on compound issues mainly security and cleaning fee.

We jammed on Sunday as I was driving out to church, She was out of the gate first I just casually looked up saw their door was open via the verandah, though the door to stairs was locked, still shouted her name from far and she sent her son to lock it up thanking me.

It would be wickedness to see and ignore it.

We don't say much except hello hi, happy Easter, happy new year to your family etc if we jam on our way out and she transferring to my account for utilities.

The gate has jam key, so we hardly have any gate issues we have minimal contact but there's empathy abeg at least I am sure of mine.

We all mind our business but I can't see something bad and ignore. I can't hear her kids screaming for help and ignore it.

On the issue of gate opening, fear of thieves make a lot of neighbors not to respond to those kind of night knockings. In this Lagos you can't respond to knocks anyhow especially at night the more reason why everyone has their keys to jam locks and visitors call their hosts to open up for them. Even during the day sef anything can happen.

Very nasty, anyhow attitude.

I’m not asking that people pokenose into each other’s affairs, but your neighbours are most times the family you have around.

What you described is not Busy body attitude at all but a literal home invasion/trespassing. Why would any person go to and open another person's window if not to trespass, and that is against the law.

I secretly spoilt my compound jam lock and threw the padlock inside bush as revenge. I knocked for 2 hours and I could see someone peeping through there curtain oo, I use stone knock for gate tire, my so called neighbours no come open door, after a while another tenant came back use phone call him wife, she came out and opened the door, she was like she never knew someone was knocking oo. I said no wahala, I didn't even act as if e pain me or said any bad word, I just keep am for mind. After some weeks them begin find padlock, lo and behold jamlock sef done spoil. One of the neighbours said they should ask me, I might know about it. If them born Una papa well come ask me useless question. Na so we take contribute another money for padlock and jamlock. No, what you described is definitely a crime in even Nigeria. When a person pokes their nose into your apartment without express permission from you, the apartment renter, the person is guilty of trespassing, and the law frowns on it even in Nigeria. That Nigerians let trespassers go scot-free does not change that fact. lipsrsealed

I purposely did a repair to the other gate that has been abandoned. And left the other one to my neighbor. But still, sometimes he gets locked outside by his family and knocked on the gate with no response from them, I usually step out to open up for him. A neighbor is like ones family, you dont have to necessarily be all up on each others business but atleast 🤷‍♀️
