Who is an evening newspaper? by Sapasenator: 2:36am On Apr 17 |
Ok guys, listen let's trash this important topic and very popular phrase used very frequently on Nairaland by the guys. In recent times I have always come across the term "evening newspaper", being used to refer to some certain individuals oftentimes the female folks on this honourable site. The term is often used in a derogatory term to refer to ladies of a certain age group who are yet to marry. I must confess that I find this term to be amusing and often wonder at the origin considering the fact that I am an avid reader of newspapers expecially the evening variety. Now due to the present economic impasse in the country, we find that lots of the menfolk who are still single and yet to marry, in particular older males in their late thirties, early to mid- forties. Can we refer to these categories of males as "evening newspapers" too. I personally think if a man is not married at 35, he should be classified as an evening newspaper or what do you guys think. For me, I would prefer the term not to be used at all as it is derogatory but if you insist on using them, I would say men could be evening newspapers too. 17 Likes 3 Shares

Even though I find the word derogatory. The fact still remains that the fecundability of a woman reduces with age, and also they tend to have more complications like pre eclampsia during pregnancy. And let's not forget women start to age early too. For men, it's about money. Majority of women will show you love (might not be genuine) if you are rich. Ned nwoko is an example, he scored a girl, most guys in their early 30s only dream off. 132 Likes 8 Shares |

Nobody can be an evening newspaper as you have rightly noted that the word is derogatory. Even worse that it most times comes from men who are unmarried themselves, but somehow clutch to that as the only means to put women down. Using Nairaland as a case study, I am yet to see any of the forum's rules that says females must be married to have peace. So the obsession with the marital status of women on this site is unbecoming. That said, marriage is a lifetime decision that can make or mar you. You should do it when you are prepared for it and with someone who wants it as much as you do. It is not for survival or change of status. If you die at 30, they will call it premature death. But you are alive and same people think you are too old for marriage. People have different spec at different stages of their lives. Pick your own spec and shut up. Nobody is an evening newspaper. If you are worried about single ladies/men, do well to marry one and help us reduce the population of singles. Anything less and you are an emptyheaded rabblerouser. 147 Likes 25 Shares |

Aareakinwunmi: Does that justify the derogatory term " evening newspaper" being to refer to single ladies. It's kind of condescending and I call on Seun to add this offensive term on the list of on Nairaland. 21 Likes 4 Shares |

pocohantas: I would say I totally agree with you. The lady is better off single than being shackled in a wrong marriage. The Nigerian society is not even helping with incessant pressures into marriages as if marriage is a big achievement, expecially on the females. There is no reason on earth why a lady should be mocked or referred to in the pejorative sense of an " evening newspaper" simply because she is yet to marry. We need to change and do better as men. 42 Likes 7 Shares |

Sapasenator: 1) I am of the belief that a good marriage is indeed an achievement to those who desire it. But when you bully people so much with something, they might fight back and you hear statements like the highlighted. 2) Until marriage happens, Nigerians should allow singles breef. I have thought about it deeply and I am yet to see any reason to shame someone for being SINGLE. 3) I have never looked at a man on this forum and thought to myself "eish, he is not married". I don't care and I won't marry him if he were single. It is always the reverse because women do not care enough about such to give men derogatory names. They might have their biases when approached by these men, but they are not malicious about it like the guys on this forum who have more venom than inland taipans. So you won't find a handful of women to adopt this name for men. 4) These venomous men do not care about (the biological clocks of) women. They only want to ensure they cause them pains and embarrassment. 51 Likes 9 Shares |

Evening newspaper is a derogatory word common in nairaland.I am not so sure I have heard that word used on anyone outside nairaland. This might be because I am not active anywhere else. The world will not come to your beck and call if you make the worst mistake a human being can make in life which is choosing a wrong and incompatible partner for marriage. That is when you would know that been called an evening newspaper is sexy. Ageing is not gender specific, everybody ages regardless of gender.Pray tell is a man's erection at 40 years the same as 20 years? We all know the answer to that question but let's pretend it's only women that has their biological clock going down. 29 Likes 6 Shares |

As I said on another thread, on a faceless forum like Nairaland, expect the worst from people. Once people have to put their details down and they can be traced, their behaviour will change. If you have self confidence issues, stay away from Nairaland. This is a place where you should expect abuses and insults simply for having an opinion different to others. It will forever be thus. 33 Likes 2 Shares |

Twoclans: You make good points but pray tell, how do you know the disparity between erections of a 40yr old and that of a 20yr old. Did you conduct some statistical sampling to have arrived at such an amazing discovery? That got me curious really. Are you saying our own Ned Nwoko is not taking good care of his young bride in the erection department? Don't you think a guy at 40 in good shape who takes good care of his body might even have a better erection than a 20yr old. Wrong marriage is horribly despicable and worse than no marriage and the EN word is absolutely derogatory and I would never refer to any lady in such a distasteful term. 21 Likes 4 Shares |

aswani: I have been on faceless forums like Quora and Redit and I can tell you whites dont curse and abuse each other this way. Methinks it is a Nigerian thing. In real lives, we are naturally loud , rambunctious and the average Nigerian is full of egos and unbridled emotions mostly absent of logic so the end product is what we see - unruly attitudes witnessed on Nairaland. Plus, I believe most of these guys grew up in homes where the father never respected the moms, I also believe they were never exposed to true maternal love growing up. Something is definitely wrong for the level of misogynist views expressed on Nairaland. 26 Likes 5 Shares |

Sapasenator: I am a sexually experienced woman, I hope you know that a wild ,hard and sustainable erection in a twenty year old adult male does not equal to satisfaction for a woman. An adult male that is above 40 and like you said has taken good care of his body might bring better experience and satisfaction regardless of the kind of erection he has. On Ned and his wife, permit me to keep quite. 12 Likes |

Twoclans: You totally have your facts in order and I promise to never engage in arguments with you on your claims above as I am guaranteed to lose 100% of the time. " Wild, hard and sustainable erections ? " those are colouful adjectives I intend to add to my vocabulary. Thank you for your contribution. Ned looks quite fit for his age and even wears tight clothes to look younger, are you insinuating Ned might not be having a " wild, hard and sustainable kini. ? " Then how do the wives survive? 8 Likes 1 Share |

pocohantas:Marriage doesn't necessarily have to be successful to be an achievement. An achievement is an accomplishment or success that someone has attained through their efforts, skills, or perseverance. It often involves reaching a goal, overcoming challenges, or making significant progress in a particular endeavor. Achievements can be personal, professional, academic, or related to various aspects of life, and they are typically recognized as moments of pride or fulfillment. Going by this definition, even getting someone to marry is an achievement; successfully marrying the person is another achievement. If it is successful and long-lasting, that is another achievement. Successfully doing anything you have always wanted to do is an achievement. 14 Likes 1 Share |

Tallesty1: So getting a narcissist to marry you is an achievement even though he runs your life. So by your own logic, my friend Chinyere, a general manager in Ecobank who was set ablaze by her husband must have achieved a lot when her murderer husband proposed to her. I have seen single ladies or guys who achieved your definition absent of marriage. I love marriage but never consider it an achievement until it is successful where both parties are happy to achieve their goals. I respect your opinion though. 12 Likes 2 Shares |

Tallesty1: Yes, but I have also seen cases of how quickly people became regretful after getting married to a wrong partner. So I don't limit it to just being married, but having a good one. 6 Likes 1 Share |

The term evening Newspaper is used to describe a woman who has passed her reproductive prime. Most people know that Newspapers are sold in the morning when the news is still fresh/recent and hence any news you are hearing of in the evening is usually stale and has little to no value. That being said, we should agree that there are certain stages in life that ensures things are done properly (Although this is not a rule). It is usually difficult/impossible to find a 30 year old man/woman as a pupil in primary school because he/ she has passed the age to still ve in school. The example above shows why older unmarried woman are referred to as Evening Newspaper. We all agree that a woman is mostly fertile between the ages of 18-35yrs ( Although some women can still give birth much later in life). This is why men usually prefer younger women and they refer to older unmarried women as evening newspapers because they have little or no reproductive value when compared to younger women. Although the paradox of life and death does not work in the theory of first come - first serve, it is important you do things in life at a time nature has made perfect(This does not mean it may not work out at other times though). So a single lady should try to vet the man she wants to marry on his character and not on his finance. Marry at "natures best time", raise your children on time to avoid being offended when society refer to you as Evening Newspaper. If you read this with an open mind devoid of sentiment, you will know I'm telling the truth. I'm always on the side of truth. Shalom 30 Likes 7 Shares |

Sapasenator:The day she was proposed to, she was happy, and friends congratulated her because something was achieved. Words do not change their meanings to accommodate our individual opinions. Though the message conveyed may vary depending on the context, but not in this instance. Building a house is an achievement. If the house later collapses on the owner and kills him, it doesn't change the fact that building it was an achievement. Gaining admission to study your chosen course at your favorite university is an achievement; failing miserably or even dropping out doesn't change that. Once you plan something and finally get it done, an achievement is made. Marriage must not be successful before it becomes an achievement; marrying is an achievement, and having a successful marriage is another achievement. Peace. 31 Likes 5 Shares |

Sapasenator: I have also been on some footballing forums with white people, the ones that are faceless and that you can register one minute and post the next like Nairaland, they are very toxic. The ones tightly controlled, not so much. I do agree with Nigerian men and our inability to show love, goes hand in hand with women and their inability to be independent. Once you start asking for this or that from a boyfriend, don't expect true respect and love. Your paragraph about being loud is very apt. Go to any football viewing centre and see arguments amongst friends. I don't think the average Nigerian takes it personal though. More diasporian ones because they have been immmersedin in other cultures. 8 Likes |
