Nobody is an evening newspaper. If you are worried about single ladies/men, do well to marry one and help us reduce the population of singles. Anything less and you are an emptyheaded rabblerouser.

It reduces a person's worth to their marital status, implying they're 'stale' or 'less desirable' if not yet married.

I believe it's a sense of insecurity you're displaying if you need or seek validation from the opposite sex to feel good about your decisions. Women say derogatory things about men all the time, you don't see us crying about it..
Lastly, if you don't pay attention to trivialities, it can never gain traction. Just ask WizKid.

Ok guys, listen let's trash this important topic and very popular phrase used very frequently on Nairaland by the guys.

In recent times I have always come across the term "evening newspaper", being used to refer to some certain individuals oftentimes the female folks on this honourable site.

The term is often used in a derogatory term to refer to ladies of a certain age group who are yet to marry.

I must confess that I find this term to be amusing and often wonder at the origin considering the fact that I am an avid reader of newspapers expecially the evening variety.

Now due to the present economic impasse in the country, we find that lots of the menfolk who are still single and yet to marry, in particular older males in their late thirties, early to mid- forties.

Can we refer to these categories of males as "evening newspapers" too.

I personally think if a man is not married at 35, he should be classified as an evening newspaper or what do you guys think.

For me, I would prefer the term not to be used at all as it is derogatory but if you insist on using them, I would say men could be evening newspapers too.

Men can't be referred to as evening newspaper cos they are the readers of the Newspapers ....

People rush for morning news cos its still new and yet to spread... by evening, any newspapers that's still in the stands don't have value again cos there's nothing new about any news it carries ...

Women don't chase men that are in their late teens or in their 20s , of course, only if the man has money of which most men only start to built from their 30s thru to their 40s .... so men don't have value when they are young unlike women .... reason there is the saying that men age like wine while women age like milk

If you are a young lady reading this, in as much as I am a women advocate for some reasons, I will not like to deceive you just as I wouldn't deceive my own daughter.

If you are a young girl reading this, please make the hay while the sun shines.

As a girl, do not compare your life with the life of guys because what guys will do and get away with all over the world not just in Nigeria, a lady may never get away with it.

As a girl child, please do note that your most promising age in the dating, marriage and romance world starts from 19yrs to 35yrs at most, please make good use of this age to achieve whatever it is that you desire.

If you cherish and desire marriage, please don't go about dribbling serious-minded guys who wants to genuinely settle down with you thinking you have all the time in the world to make choice of the perfect man of your dream.

First, there is nothing like perfect man or perfect match, all men have their imperfections just as all women do, so if you want to enjoy a flourishing relationship in dating and marriage with the opposite sex, please lower your expectations and expect less from the opposite sex and always give yourself a true self assessment before you go wishing the unthinkable. You want a rich, tall, dark, fair, faithful, generous man, ask yourself if you meet such a man, whether you qualify to be his dream girl, remember he too have his own spec?

As a lady, make sure you add extra values to the man in your life aside sex and romance, men of nowadays are learning fast and are beginning to ask questions too, bear this in mind.

Gone are the days your sexy look alone guarantees you a rich husband, you can still be lucky, but above the sexy pretty look, add some extra values to yourself as a lady to increase your desirability in the marriage market for guys. You can be lucky to date rich and famous guys by just being pretty and sexy, but honestly with the kind of guys I am seeing today, it maybe difficult to hook them down for marriage with just your sexy looks and pretty face.

The earlier the better. Lucky is the woman who got married and gave birth to all her kids before she clocked 45yrs.

If you desire to marry as a girl, tell God what you want, forget those deceiving themselves after they have made several mistakes while young.

You can still be happily married, have a good job or career or business or trade, so why desire one over another when you can actually achieve both with ease?

Don't turn down serious minded guys asking for your hand in marriage in the name of my career first, I want to focus on my career, I want to finish my PhD first, etc, you can achieve all those things even as a married lady or guy. I am married and still schooling and adding more to my academic credentials, marriage didn't stop me, marriage hasn't stopped anybody that I know from growing in life.

The term 'evening newspaper' is generalized derogatory name for unmarried lady of 30 years and above by unserious and irresponsible boys here who are never married. Another one is simp which refers to any man that is spending money on ladies whether she is their wife or fiancée

Nobody can be an evening newspaper as you have rightly noted that the word is derogatory. Even worse that it most times comes from men who are unmarried themselves, but somehow clutch to that as the only means to put women down.

Using Nairaland as a case study, I am yet to see any of the forum's rules that says females must be married to have peace. So the obsession with the marital status of women on this site is unbecoming.

That said, marriage is a lifetime decision that can make or mar you. You should do it when you are prepared for it and with someone who wants it as much as you do. It is not for survival or change of status. If you die at 30, they will call it premature death. But you are alive and same people think you are too old for marriage.

People have different spec at different stages of their lives. Pick your own spec and shut up.

Nobody is an evening newspaper. If you are worried about single ladies/men, do well to marry one and help us reduce the population of singles. Anything less and you are an emptyheaded rabblerouser.

1) I am of the belief that a good marriage is indeed an achievement to those who desire it. But when you bully people so much with something, they might fight back and you hear statements like the highlighted.

2) Until marriage happens, Nigerians should allow singles breef. I have thought about it deeply and I am yet to see any reason to shame someone for being SINGLE.

3) I have never looked at a man on this forum and thought to myself "eish, he is not married". I don't care and I won't marry him if he were single. It is always the reverse because women do not care enough about such to give men derogatory names. They might have their biases when approached by these men, but they are not malicious about it like the guys on this forum who have more venom than inland taipans. So you won't find a handful of women to adopt this name for men.

4) These venomous men do not care about (the biological clocks of) women. They only want to ensure they cause them pains and embarrassment.

Have you ever thought deeply about broke shaming young and struggling men?
Women should understand that what marriage and fertility are to women is same as what wealth and riches are to men. Thank you.

Society is inherently a bully. It will bully you for not valuing or manifesting what it values. For example, it values having a husband for ladies and it values having money for guys. If you lack these as a lady or a guy it makes fun of you and calls you names. Why is this? It's because society, just like your average organism, has evolved to be self preserving. Family life is highly esteemed within society because that's how society propagates; through the birth and nurturing of the next generation within the safety of homes. Consequently, the perceived failure to initiate a family, whether by choice or circumstance, is frowned upon.

This phenomenon isn't peculiar to Nigeria. In China, for instance, women above a certain age, surpassing the preferred age for marriage, are labeled "Leftover Ladies" by society. This stems from the notion that the most desirable ladies have already been chosen, leaving the inferior (ugly, bad character, boring, damaged) specimens behind. This perception is compounded by the issue of fecundity; the decline in a woman's fertility after a certain age, which diminishes her desirability in the eyes of potential partners who prioritize having their own children -- children being one of the main reasons people marry.

Regarding the term "Evening Newspaper," while I know nothing about its historical origin, it likely reflects the idea of something left over and consequently deemed less relevant. This parallels the decline in sales of newspapers by evening, as the day's news is typically well-known by that time, diminishing enthusiasm for evening editions.

Like I've stated in my opening, just like women are shamed for being unmarried at a certain age, there exists a similar phenomenon of "broke-shaming" men, wherein a man's financial status is spotlighted as a factor making him undesirable for romantic relationships. Or haven't you heard the popular notion that broke men don't deserve **cookies**? You may think this is another crazy, materialistic notion -- and there's a lot of that in the current ziegeist -- but do you know that the success and well-being of children - the quality of education, healthcare, exposure, etc - are often directly correlated with the depth of their father's pocket? In both cases, aspects perceived as detracting from one's desirability in the "marriage market" are exploited to inflict emotional harm. After all, when we wrestle with words, don't we target our opponent's greatest insecurity, aiming for where they're most vulnerable?

This culture of shaming individuals for remaining unmarried beyond a certain age is detrimental. It adversely impacts people's well-being and may compel some to enter into marriages for the wrong reasons. If we must be a more compassionate society, we need to stop this, but na Naija we dey, I won't count on that. My advice would be to develop thick skin, because people go yab you tire.

Even though I find the word derogatory.

The fact still remains that the fecundability of a woman reduces with age, and also they tend to have more complications like pre eclampsia during pregnancy.

And let's not forget women start to age early too.

For men, it's about money.

Majority of women will show you love (might not be genuine) if you are rich.

Ned nwoko is an example, he scored a girl, most guys in their early 30s only dream off.
So right.

Well said. People make assumptions that everone wants marriage or that they want marriage at this point in their lives.

Evening newspaper is as derogatory as they come as it doesnt even conote "old" but rather "expired'.

Lol. Useless assumptions which is most times a coping mechanism for the attacker. Why so obsessed with the marital life of another when you have your own life to fix?

I have seen them put these evening newspapers into heirachies and types. Like 1988 Sun or Vanguard.
