Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police, says Nigeria is not “mature” for state police.

Egbetokun spoke on Monday at a national dialogue on state police organised by the house of representatives in Abuja.

The theme of the dialogue is ‘Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria’.

Represented by Ben Okolo, an assistant inspector-general of police, Egbetokun said Nigeria is not ready for the establishment of state police.

"It is the submission of the leadership of the Nigeria police force that Nigeria is yet to mature and ready for the establishment of state-controlled police,” he said.

Yet the present day Nigerian police being a flop is the the one bastardizing the system. Same extortionists, bribe-takers, instrument of state terror and involved in extra-judicial killings.

But we are ripped for federal police? Where tribalism n religious sentiments is used to promote officers leading to the poor performance of the force?

If your state Is not ready for state Police good and fine we are not equal but dont stand in the way of States who wants it

The argument of governors using them to witch hunt is baseless we have seen president, ministers use them to witch hunt... If anything it weakens the already too powerful president which is good

Hand of Esau, voice of Jacob. With state police, 2027 would be a herculean task for some people. With the amount of political power concentrated at the centre, it will take only a person in the mould of Nelson Mandela to allow a review of the constitution that would whittle down his power. They branded the northern political keaders as being archaic who enjoy primitive accumulation of power. Hipocrites claiming NADECO.

It is better the president alone uses them to witch hunt than for governors to do same.it will be too much for the citizenry to take.eveb the governors have some form of control over the police esp in elections but once they fail in securing their states, they blame it on lack of state policing...

In any case, what we need is community policing or the type of state police that exists in America where each town, settlement or city operates it's own police answerable to the town council led by a mayor and then the state have its own police and the federal have FBI.i think the east has something similar where each town esp anambra has its vigilante service that is answerable to each town union led by the king and the PG.the governor will have little or no control over them except in anambra vigilante service or bakassi boys.i think Nigeria should adopt that method

We are not ripe for state police.

Ultimately, the problem is funding for me. All my other objections, I have dismissed them, even the tribalism and religion one. If state police is going to be tribalistic, they will end up losing investors. Bad news. SO, state police is going to work.

But funding is a big problem. A BIG PROBLEM. States that most cannot pay the current mininum wage, talkless new wage...are now going to fund state police. Okay. Either state starts charging everyone tax...which I know Nigerians don't like, or they take loan, and more loan. (Forget federal funding. ).

We too dey like copy other countries. Yes, USA Has state police, and also USA has a diversifed economy with everyone..almost everyone...paying taxes. Not like Nigeria where most of us do not pay tax. Even the one we pay, can only cover 20% of our income. We are not funding our National police force well enough...we spend less than one tenth what New York CITY (Not the state ) spends to police 200 million people. It's a miracle we have not crashed into anarchy by now. Yet we expect the NPF to perform like NYPD. Na magic thinking be that.

If I suggest we should do things like pay tax, remove subsides to find more money, and so forth, people will abuse me. Yet people are here calling for state police that their state cannot fund. Some will even call for regions to come back so that we can have regional police...it's like people do not know why we have states, and no, it is not because of Gowon. State issues started in the first republic...that is why we ended up with Midwestern region...and we would have even gotten middle belt region if not for the 66 coup.

LIke now, Zamfara state is poor, broke and has a massive kidnapping problem and bandit issue. It needs a state police that is well armed, and has things like drones, aeroplanes, tactical gear, good arms, and specialist commando style police. How is it going to be funded? From the state's brokeass funds. Same for kaduna. Lagos needs a proper urban force...HECK, Lagos needs a police force like the NYPD , with funding of 10 billion dollars or more per annum...otherwise it would be ineffective. Borno, we know. Even Anambra and Enugu need a well funded force...with esn. I haven't mentioned fulani herdsmen issues...you need something like a well armed police force AND a well armed specialist SPESTNAZ (google it) type force. Otherwise, wahala go start.

I tell you, unless we are ready to make some tough sacrfices, instead of expecting oil money to cover everything....we can't have state police. God knows, I wish it was otherwise. We never even adequately fund our own police force self...with wretched housing on top.

Are we all ready to pay half our income, including people in villages, and poor city dwellers...in tax, to ensure that we get a well functioning state police. And please, that thing called security vote....e no fit fund am.

The lies they tell themselves to remain in control.

Left to them, Nigeria won't be ripe for anything, even having states.

Every state should have it's own police. Federal police should only be involved in federal matters, like when incidents happen on a federal institution, when people commit federal crimes, and things like patrolling on federal highways

State police should be controlled by governors, and there should be resource control as well

If you're worried that governors will misuse them, we have the supreme court to settle disagreements between the states and FG

What exactly is the good thing that has come from APC name one

You want a president who has ultimate power to control police, so that only people from a region would control police?

So that people who refused to go to school controlling police would affect my state bases on their incompetence?

A governor has limited power,

In fact you can still have state Police, controlled by the federal police commission while everyone serve in their state funded by the state government

The major problem of this country is leaders not knowing reality or faking not knowing reality

What is enviable about this current police?

Absolutely nothing, instead make he reform them and see how they can collaborate with other security agencies to deliver topnotch protection for the country, he's concerned about state police

The man don already tell una the federal government stance Sha, make una forget state police be that

Power too sweet this man...e no wan share anything.

Dear Oga Egbetokun,

You have to demonstrate NPF can handle the current security situations...

Proof that the numbers of personnel is enough to fight crime..

Proof that you have indeed withdrawn NPF from being an escort of politicians to face real policing ..

Proof that State Governors can give directive to the State commissioners of police and they will obey.

Proof that the current system is better than creating State police
