During the era of matured minds, cultism flourished in Nigeria.

Las Las they should make UTME cut off mark 200 across Nigeria.

Olayemudia:
I got into a federal university at the age of 16, graduated with First class and have completed my doctorate. A pause would have destroyed my momentum.

That's nonsense. After entering school at eighteen, going through strike and unnecessary omissions and carryover in school, and then wait for 1 to two years before going for NYSC. Then spend like one year at NYSC. By the time you will be looking for job, you will be around 30. When they will be advertising for jobs, they will tell you they need people below 24 years.

Nigeria Polpulation Census will cash out.

They have been selling birth certificates to people since 100AD.

The parents will start falsifying their children ages.

If they strictly enforce their law of minimum 6yrs entry into the primary schools and outlaw "double promotions", everything else will fall into place.
And why should government dictate the age you go to school?

Hmmm good one.
I only fear desperate parents that would go extra mile to manipulate their child age 15,16,17 go turn 18 with with just another falsified birth certificate. undecided
I doubt this new law would work.
Nigerians are experts in age falsification.
Why do you it it's good for government to decide when you should attend university?
What's the advantage of going to the university at age 18? Has any study been carried out to show that kids do better in university when 18 years and older?

Good one, our universities are now looking like a glorified secondary school with underage age children litering the environment. Love the good old days.

So what happens to the 15 year old that completes secondary school .

They should go and learn apprenticeship that will add value to them. You see Asian country before going into high institutions you must have learnt a skill.

Rubbish policy. Allow them to graduate young and add value to the system while their brains are still very active.

I graduated from the University at 18 and I have never regretted it for a day. It took me several years to get my first full-time job that I was truly satisfied with. So government ought to factor that also.

You want to waste their productive years in a country where employers will be asking for 4 years work experience at 22.

You will never know how it affected you. You are just being sentimental here. Even in developed societies children are not rushed over there. It's the same system of education but short cut has always be our problem here.

I honestly do not support this. So if a child graduates from secondary school at 15 and clears his/her WAEC. What the government is telling us is that if the child's parents cannot afford a private school, the child would stay idle at home for 3 years before giving university education a shot.

That's like delaying the academic advancement of that child. Very bad if you ask me.

And for the records, I finished my secondary education at the age of 15.

That's not even the issue because you can learn any hand work at the time or do some online studies. My own problem is all those companies that will say between the age of 21-25 should only apply. They should have just made it 16yrs which is pretty reasonable for me

I think 18 is to late to start writing jamb especially knowing how the exam csn be and how competitive it is to enter.

we also know the strict age limits for entry level jobs in Nigeria. How do they meet up with these strict criterias in future in the job market?

Let's stop thinking backwards.

Why will they stop the under age marriage ? Hypocrites. Have they solve the problem of strike? The Nigerian education usually take a nose dive in any administration where Hausa man in minister of Education.... Pls southern here don't be DECIEVED to keep your child at home till 18 ooo. They can do online studies of foreign countries.... Nigeria is not serious about any policy. Any government smoker can wake up and make any statement and ignorant bloggers will say the FG say...... Sho Yano – Age 18
Yano is the son of Katsura Yano from Japan and Kyung Yano from South Korea. He was born in Portland, Oregon and is currently a physician. He was a child prodigy and was apparently reading at the age of two, playing classical music at the age of three, and composing music at the age of five. At the age of eight, he scored 1500 on the SAT, which, at the time, had a total score of 1600.

Yano entered college at the age of 9. He attended Loyola University, Chicago and graduated summa cum laude in three years. When he was 12 years old, he entered University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. In this program, students earn both a doctorate and a medical degree simultaneously. He did his residency in the area of pediatric neurology. His PhD is in molecular genetics and cell biology, which was completed after his first year of medical school in the program. By the time he was 18, he was in his second year of medical school and was interacting with patients as a PhD on his way to becoming an MD.

University of Chicago sits in good company with Columbia University and Stanford University since all three are tied at #4 in the U.S. New and World Report Rankings for best school in the nation. QS Top Universities ranks University of Chicago at an impressive #10 in the world. The university is clearly built for research with a majority, 59%, of its student population doing post-graduate work. U.S. News ranks University of Chicago’s medical research at #11 in the nation, tied with New York University and University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, #14 in Biological Sciences, and #12 in Chemistry.

Yano is currently continuing his pediatric neurology residency at the University of Chicago.

Well, I can't say that I am surprised seeing comments of a lot of person's in support of this. It's practically expected. But for me, all it shows is backward thinking. In a world where we have 20 and 21 year olds as ceo's and director's of companies, here someone who probably has raised kids who gained admission before 18 is saying that young school leavers should have to wait until they are 18 before they can get admission. Are we going forward or backward? Everytime they are talking about skills acquisition, what is the university meant for? For certificate acquisition? As far as I know, the university is supposed to be the foremost skills acquisition center, but instead of the government ensuring that everything is put in place so that whatever skill a student was supposed to get in school is effectively acquired, they are busy looting the country and talking about skills acquisition. It's all backward thinking at the end of the day, and I wonder when all of these will end.

Minister just want act... This is not a necessary policy. It will mess the educational system further up.

6_3_3_4 is 16rs
So a nigerian pupil will not attend kindergarten 1 to 3
Because if he/she does, she will be 19 before attempting her first jamb?
Or is a 3yrs old pupils first experience in school meant to be primary 1? If we're to use the 6334 system.

.... The minister should be looking into adjusting the 6334 system into modern day realities. Kids these days are naturally born extra smart!

You are a classic example of the rut in our system. You circumnavigated the system and you are so proud of yourself. 6334 was put in place for a reason. Educationists and technocrats formulated the policy for a reason. You graduated at 18 right? That means you started university on or before 14. How many years did you spend in secondary school? How old were you when you started primary school?

Awon werey. Their children are not in Nigeria. They are doing rubbish with other people's lives. We can't eat, we can't drink and our children we are planning to educate are being deprived of their rights to educate. What a world?

This is a misplaced priority. Notice me idea. Werey gbogbo.

When they leave secondary school at the age of 15, what will they be doing at home. Possibly to learn a craft which will not allow them to go back to school.

They should be allowed to further their education when their brains are still fresh.

I don't think this is a good decision

It's a very good decision. In UK, your child cannot be in secondary school except he's 11 years old or above. That's a standard. By the time such kid finishes secondary school, and does A-levels, he's already 18 and ready for university. That way, you won't have kids in diapers attending a university.

This is a step in the right direction smiley smiley.
This should be sponsored as a bill and inevitably become a law. One of the many advantages are: anyone who finishes secondary school at 16 should learn a good skill before varsity. Our youths are so unproductive after varsity because they have no skills and add no value to the society. This will reduce high rate of prostitvtion (hook-up) and internet fraud (yahoo) for those will venture into them because of lack of job. grin grin
Unfortunately, ASUU strike will take 2 or 3 years! This is not the priority for now; getting it right with ASUU and education generally is the priority for now. Private universities will gain here though
