i know the government have been a mess but lets look at it critically. 500 naira that year has the same purchasing power as about 4 million to 4.5 million today and that will also buy you a car.In 1982 it would take a minimum wage earner 149 months to earn 500naira, Today in 149 months a minimum wage earner would have earned almost 4.5million naira, this is also enough to buy a car.
Although there are other things to the equation that will make it more difficult to have 4.5m today compared to having 500naira in 1982 but if we look at the face value of the 500naira in 1982 and 4.5m in 2024, u really wont say there is much difference

Volkswagen beetle was 4500 naira and not 1500, that was the amount my father bought his in 1987. He wanted to buy Peugeot 504 but was told the amount was 5,500 naira so he went for Volkswagen.

I remember when my uncle showed up with 6 brand new Volvos one Saturday evening like that. This was a private business man and Farmer with zero affiliation to anything government.

Exactly! N500 rental for the hall at Eko Club was indeed VERY expensive back then like I also stated in my first post on page 1 of this thread. I remember that N20 could buy a lot of foreign and Nigerian-manufactured things at any Kingsway Department Stores outlets or any of the other 2 competing Department Stores such as Leventis and UTC as of 1982.

Globally, inflation has eaten deep into the purchasing power of a lot of folks and prices of goods and services have relentlessly changed over the last 100 years of consumerism.

Salary back then was around 200 to 300 naira.
