This is what I keep saying. I had lived in Lagos my whole life. My father has propertiessss there. I was very shocked to see the narrative that was pushed out that he (Tinubu) is the mastermind behind the success of Lagos and I keep asking myself, no be this Lagos wey i know and grow in? You just wrote nonsense. I was in the University at the time....Yes, the allocations of the LGs was what was seized, ad why would any sane person justify that? I suppose you are not a Lagosian yourself, but one of those that benefitted from Lagos free school, and exams as at then. During the time that those funds were seized, did you know how the LGs and LCDAs were ran? or you suppose the LGs shutdown and salaries were not paid?
Depriving the LGs of their allocations was the worse thing that can ever happen to any country, because that is what affects the grassroots directly. There are primary health cares, primary schools, roads, salaries of Baales and Obas and chiefs that constitutes the security architecture of Local Govts area etc that are directly under Local Govts and they needed funding for optimal performance. Even at that, he grew the IGR of Lagos from 600M to 7Billion, that was on the backdrop of just surviving military rule.

He increased the staffing of State Secretariat....increased their salaries, removed redundancy from work and created new departments, laid foundation for the progress that follows. More importantly, he built a resistance against PDP plan to monopolise the political terrain. Today, we have oppositions with strong voice, it was because of someone like him that there was a viable room for resistance. He needed funding to wrestle power from the centre, formed alliances with other states, funded them when they had nothing to generate. Allowed non-indigenes of Lagos freely run for offices, appointed many across boards. he started that Legacy of a true democrats and cohesion. Sadly, all of those people are self-centered.

Like you said, you were a baby then, in Secondary school, you wouldn't have known much about the happenings in Lagos or be concerned cos you were largely dependent on your parents. Bet you hardly knew what the news was saying just like any normal Nigerian kid those years, if not for social media today.

During his tenure, Lagos state contributed more than 30% to our country’s GDP, accounted for more than 65% of industrial investment in Nigeria, 80% of its international trade, and collected more than 60% of the country’s value-added tax. All these were impossible prior before democracy which was why, Lagos was unable to generate above the 600 million IGR. So, Federal Govt as well benefitted toabout 30% which was shared to other States. if he didn't lay the foundation, trust me, till date, Lagos will be grappling in the 600 million circle just like other States had barely improved their IGRs, running their State like a religious or family institute.

Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) was made possible during his time, and there has been improvements on that. Everything i mentioned, i knew one or two persons that benefitted or got employed. Programmes such as “Jigi Bola” and Free Health Policy were introduced the same year. My grandmother benefitted, she was almost blind at the time, but the free surgery provided and the follow-up care made her see agai until she eventually passed on few years ago.

Your WAEC fee was paid by Bola, it meant a lot to many parents then, and there was no discrimination in who would benefit from it. He didn't do it for Yorubas or Lagosian but for every student in Lagos. I remember also "the spelling Bees'' competition. I remember also the one-day Lagos governor programme where student irrespective of their origin or language were allowed to govern for a day.
One of the remarkable investments into Lagos was the Lekki free trade zone. Another was the Housing Scheme during his time, many houses were built across all Local Govts.
LAWMA, LASEPA, LWC, PUMAU, LASECA. All formulated by Tinubu to tackle the issue of environmental decay in Lagos. The creation of these agencies also gave job opening to the masses. BRT buses, first of its kind in Nigeria started from his time as governor. My school alone at the time received 9 luxurious buses.
Not like his time was perfect, but coming from Military era, and as an opposition to Obasanjo, he did well. One of the downsides was, he promised to build a model “millennium” secondary school in each of the 20 local councils of the state. At the end of his 8th year, however, only 4 schools were built. I forgot to mention that he upgraded all the existing General Hospitals in the State. He promised to upgrade my school with modern facilities as at then, but he didn't.
