The only company that could have competed was Microsoft, but they came in late.. blackberry RIM had the market at one point, just as symbian started dying, but it didn't last.
Symbian was built on C++, there are way more Java programmers than C++
Google and Apple are just too big for those smaller companies.
I still got the nokia android phone which wasn't so bad.

No excuse. Nokia and Blackberry no longer relevant, it's their choice, they could've been if they wanted.
Java is no excuse. IOS is not also built on Java neither and it's very competitive and much relevant today. Symbian can also switch to suitable PL if the C++ was issue.
BB was built on Java but no longer relevant. The issue is not about the programming language.
The kind of mobile world I would have expected as of today: At least four main competing mobile OS globally - Symbian OS, IOS, BB OS, Android OS.
Nokia and BB fall my hand big time. The thing dey pain me sef once in a while. Most especially, BB has very appealing variety of product designs unlike all these iPhone, android phones which all basically look the same - boring glass face and metal back. Just plain with no sophisticated designs.

I literally used nokia 2.3 years back. I bought it upon launch@slot because I thought nokia was the brand of old. Few months upon usage, multiple charging port issues. One day, the phone turned off, and never came on. Cause of death: panel issues. I conflicted with hardware and software issues during my time with nokia. Who are they trying to deceive with their nonsense flashbacks? Never again.
