Except for personality likes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with public proposals.

A lady who "rejected" you in public will likely reject you in private, so it is not about the privacy/publicity of it. It's simply because you guys are not on the same page.

There are 1001 public proposals with happy endings, but once one doesn't go well, confirmation bias will set in and most people will start running away with their conclusions and justification for disliking it.
