For a long time, I thought the idea of young men marrying older women was just something you’d read about on social media or see reported on TV—a strange, far-off phenomenon that didn’t happen in our communities. But all that changed when I started attending friends' weddings at the registry.

It was eye-opening, to say the least: young, attractive Nigerian men, full of life and ambition, standing beside much older foreign women, exchanging vows and tying the knot. In other cases, young women are marrying men old enough to be their fathers.

The reality is clear: many young people across Africa, and Nigeria in particular, are so driven to find a way out of the country that they’re willing to go to great lengths—even unconventional relationships—to secure that opportunity. It speaks to the desperation some feel to leave by any means necessary, whether it’s through marriage or other methods, they just want to Japa.

When you ask these young men why they’ve chosen to marry women so much older, they insist it’s out of love. But a question lingers: if it’s truly about love, why aren’t they finding similar connections with older women here in Nigeria? Why do they only seem to “fall in love” with those who can offer them a ticket abroad? Could it be that foreign women have something our own older women in Nigeria don’t, or is there something deeper at play?

In the end, it’s a complex mix of ambition, love (or perhaps convenience), and the pursuit of a better life. It leaves us wondering what impact this trend will have on our society in the years to come.

As a young man just marry any woman that will help your life financially!!!...There's nothing like TRUE LOVE....that shit died way back in our parents' era...if you see old woman oo...or single mum oo...or double mom oo...or triple mom oo...that will help your growth financially as a man...then marry her!!! Leave broke girls that are out to tie you down with fake love alone!!! Those girls won't even look your way if you were broke!!! An lgbo adage says..."Since birds have learnt how to fly without perching...Hunters have learnt how to shoot without missing"...So since Naija girls now marry only for money....let us guys also start marrying for money too...very simple and short...
