A lot is changing or has changed in Nigeria. It seems a lot of extended family is there now only as formality. Most people tend to focus only on themselves or on their nuclear or immediate families. The reasons for this individualistic lifestyle that most of us have adopted, varies from person to person, and is at variance with the communalistic lifestyle that most of our parents and grandparents, enjoyed while they were growing up.

But you, how often do you communicate with, or visit your extended family members?

The extended family system in Nigeria has faced significant challenges in recent times, leading to its decline in some areas. Here are some factors that have contributed to the erosion of the extended family system in Nigeria:

Economic Factors
1. Urbanization: As people move to cities for better economic opportunities, they often leave their extended family members behind, leading to physical distance and disconnection.
2. Poverty: Economic hardship can make it difficult for extended family members to support each other, leading to a decline in the system.
3. Individualism: The increasing emphasis on individualism and personal achievement can lead to a decline in the importance placed on family ties.

Social Factors
1. Westernization: The influence of Western culture, which emphasizes nuclear families, has contributed to the decline of the extended family system.
2. Migration: As people migrate to other countries, they often leave their extended family members behind, leading to a disconnection from their cultural heritage.
3. Changing values: The values of younger generations are shifting, with many prioritizing personal freedom and autonomy over family obligations.

Cultural Factors
1. Breakdown of traditional values: The erosion of traditional values, such as respect for elders and communal living, has contributed to the decline of the extended family system.
2. Loss of cultural heritage: As Nigerian culture becomes more Westernized, the importance of extended family ties is being lost.
3. Changing roles of women: Women's roles in Nigerian society are changing, with many seeking education and careers outside the home, leading to a shift away from traditional family responsibilities.

Other Factors
1. Conflict and violence: Conflicts, such as the Boko Haram insurgency, have displaced many people, leading to a disruption of extended family ties.
2. Government policies: Government policies, such as the emphasis on nuclear families in housing and social welfare programs, have inadvertently contributed to the decline of the extended family system.
3. Education: While education is essential for personal development, it can also lead to a decline in the importance placed on extended family ties as individuals become more focused on personal achievement.

These factors have all contributed to the decline of the extended family system in Nigeria. However, it's essential to note that the extended family system is still highly valued in many Nigerian cultures, and efforts are being made to preserve and adapt this system to modern realities.

I see my in-law almost everyday. We spend quality time.

Not close with relatives from fathers side, just a few, prefer it that way, to avoid see finish.
I do see them at village meetings, once in a while.

I check up with relatives from mothers side anytime i go back home.

I call my real friends every weekend.

The older I get, the more i realize it's the simple things that matter.
So I'm trying to maximize and value family time. Life is short.

No life without them as often as possible you can call. What's the essence of living without being in close contact with your blood relatives?

You can only be survived by them, no mention of the wealth you left behind.

I simply stopped because of my cousins. I used to be the type that cared for extended family members. I discovered that the more I asked after them, the more they billed me and tell me of their financial problems. They thought I had enough, that's why I was calling them. Me that is managing my life .

May the devil with seven heads baptise Nnamdi Kanu and his co-travellers for messing up the tranquillity and peace of Igboland and turning the place to den of armed marauders and kidnap-for-ransom criminals.

it is because of them I have not been travelling home to see extended family members as frequently as I would have loved to! angry

This used to be part of our culture which is fast fading away due to the encroachment of western culture and civilisation. It will shock us one day when we see these westerners coming to learn of our culture.

The rate at which black Americans now throng africa for true love despise being duped by some useless guys is a proof. Amazingly, the whites are now joining them. Once they find one, they don't want to go back to America again, they stay put. My white friend and I visited Abuja last year. He asked me to take him to an african restaurant and I took him to jevinik at wuse too. I ordered pounded yam and he said he'd like to order same. I washed my hands cos I loved eating swallow with my hands and he did the same. He said he's never tasted such a good meal with a slightly spicey vegetable soap.

because of our copy-copy nature, we tend to lose our cultural values which are supposed to be our heritage.

Even me, I sometimes don't pick unknown numbers to prevent billing. Everybody dey manage now cry

That's the problem we have these days. Suffering induced by the government has made many people a snub.

The fabric of brotherliness amongst Nigerians have been torn by Tinubu's administration. Can't really blame people.
