HesInMe:
No nah. You know I read and respect your opinions. My question was, Why invest now?

Okay, let me offer why not now, then tell me where I'm wrong: That the stock is trading on Presco stardust that will dissipate soon; that their most prized assets, oil palm seedlings, are 5-8 years from peak production; and that the company effectively has zero revenue and is burning through cash.
Okay, let’s think about this logically for the sake of academic discussion:

1. Have you checked how much land they own? Even without generating revenue, that land is appreciating in value, especially now that the naira has devalued more than ever before. Please help me calculate the worth of the owned land—not the leased land.

2. Their piggery section won’t take "eight years" to mature as you claim. I may be wrong, but you can easily Google the pig life cycle.

3. I heard they have invested in crops that can generate marginal revenue in the meantime.

4. In six to eight years, palm fruit will be worth more than it is today. That’s how the world works—prices tend to rise over time, even under good governance. It’s built into the system.

5. One of the directors loaned ₦1 billion to the business. So, who should I believe—you, with no skin in the game, or someone who put his own money on the line? Who should I take more seriously?

I sold Sugar at an 880K loss because I kept buying at higher prices—my first purchase was at 20-something (I need to check). After selling Sugar, I used the proceeds to buy into Presco, which is now up about 70%.

I noticed issues with Sugar but held on until it became painfully clear that there was a problem—then I sold. I even made a case for that very issue, and the problem in Sugar still exists. I provided a detailed analysis of it, and it’s here.

This isn’t about competition. You’ve been in this longer than I have—I only started in 2020. Just saying. undecided
I sold at over 4m loss. God... Forgive me my sins.

CBN reviewers need to sit up. They get to know the dividend proposed by UBA and other market sensitive information which they can take advantage of. Are they more skilled than the Auditors of the banks? What's the earliest time the results and dividend declaration will be released to the public? 2 weeks or 4 weeks?

I estimate a final dividend payment of not less than N2. That is total dividend payment of N4.

The ₦4 million may be a very small fraction of your invested capital, but I have learned that selling at a loss is not necessarily a bad idea if you can identify a suitable replacement. Trading is all about turnover. You could spend two years waiting for a stock to gain 200%, or you could cut losses—taking a 70% gain here and a 50% gain there—ultimately achieving far better results over the same period.

There are many paths to success, as long as you have a system that screens for good stocks. Fortunately, this thread provides that for free. Many posters share stock picks that you can research further. My point is, you don’t have to hold on to a losing position, especially if it’s clear that recovery will take a long time.

I like how, when we Nigerians can't defend something, we belittle it as "academic." Lol. I would've thought that Tinubunomics has taught us, in a harsh, practical sense, that a naira today is worth more than a naira tomorrow.

So, essentially, you're buying today a pig and maize farm and a maybe-maybe (in 8 years) quarter-Presco? Because I'm sure you can go and acquire land in Ondo yourself.

ositadima1:

I have no opinion on Ellah lakes as a company currently or their potential. This is just me asking.

At the moment that they’re not generating anything revenue, is it really a bad decision to stay on the sidelines to see their developments. Any gain to me in the stock in the short run is based on speculation considering that fact. If it was a case of revenue and a loss making business I’d even understand that a bit better. I personally won’t buy until I know the palm trees are close to maturity or I hear of their first production I don’t think one will really miss out on much between now and then

Just my opinion

It is SEC's fault. They should fine banks for any late filing of results and not give any extensions based on the excuse of waiting for CBN approval. That way CBN will get the message.

On second thoughts I think I agree with @Hesinme view about the banks.
For those that have alloted shares already, since they’re already listed, they will qualify for dividend. We could see a lower dividend per share for these banks that alloted. The full year earnings will be divided by old shares but the dividend will be paid on new shares.
It could be a much lower dividend yield than we’re used to. What would market reaction be then

Learn this today: You gain more from arguments than from one-sided dialogue. BBM is good, no doubt, but like all of us, he has room for improvement—which I pointed out clearly. He gets some things right and misses others. His predictions could be improved through backtesting and greater specificity. If you’re interested, you can take on that assignment: gather all his predictions, compare them with the corresponding data at the time, and see if they would have resulted in a huge profit or small profit. It’s not difficult, just time-consuming.

As for Agba, he predicted a market crash that never happened. What if you had followed his advice and offloaded all your stocks in anticipation? You would have missed these gains.

Please stop being emotional and sentimental—try to analyze these things critically. An argument isn’t meant to shut you up; it’s simply an exchange of opposing views. I understand that in your culture, arguments may have negative connotations, but how is that my fault?
Thank you for your comments. I read all 3. I appreciate the politeness and you taking your time to carefully address all that you addressed. I may not be able to quote Rabbi's posts, but I was referring to his excellent forecasts about NGX; I acknowledge your angle.

I'm not being emotional. I enjoy reading opinions, counter-views, arguments, experience and all informative posts on here, just like many people. I have quoted your brilliant posts in the past, so I learn from them.

It is entertaining and informing to listen to two people argue about which is better between Honda and Toyota, but the moment either debater focuses on driving home the point that the other camp is blind or not knowledgeable, the argument becomes personal and distasteful.

An adage says: Ogbon o'logbon ni kii je ki a pe agbalagba ni were. Drops of knowledge from each one of us here will make an ocean of knowledge that benefits us rather than a reason for calling an outsider an ignorant fellow.

I think UBA has adequate eps to support N4 annual dividend payment for 2024 and going forward even with enlarged number of shares. 2024Q3 eps was nearly N15. With enlarged shares and Q4 profits, eps should stay flat. And this eps does not include the gains in comprehensive income. Without further devaluations comprehensive income won't be like x3 profit again. (Year to Q3 profit was N0.5T and Comprehensive Income was 1.6T)
