Agreed, I don’t think Ukraine was ever planning to win. It was meant to be a war of attrition a la Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc. that would probably lead to Russia’s economic decline and eventual tactical withdrawal, while maintaining Ukrainian nationalistic pride. Russia had said they’d win in few weeks! There are really no winners in war.

You must first understand history—without understanding the past, you can never truly judge a situation. The USSR encompassed Russia and several other states.
