You got the timing for that aiwa right. It came out around 1997. I remember buying one from mega plaza VI with one of my first earning after nysc around 1997. I remember standing there looking at it about 60k or 70 cannot remember, one well dressed white guy then approached me and asked if I liked it, I answered yes, but it was a bit high, he asked how much I had I told him, he said I should give him the cash, then called one of the sales people to sort me out. That was how I saved 10k from the sticker price. Lol.

You are right about the price. They were one of the fast selling electronics in our shop then. Mostly made in Japan. Then, you hardly see electronics made in China.
You could also get quality used ones then for less than half the price of new ones.
