Latest by July we can expect another round of borrowings by the FG.
In fact the low oil output, coupled with 20% shortfall in crude benchmark price, makes this highly probable.

How this will affect the OCs is another ballgame...

crownprince2017:
I believed the market will still remain flat, the worst case scenario. because reduction in oil price will bring about reduction in cost of production for companies as well as increase in purchasing power.

Will country borrow, I don't think they would, based on other available sources of income which has increased in value like solid minerals as well as increased in tax etc.

The block is vice versa...

Seun:
Dear Nairalanders,

We have just activated a feature that allows you to block people who harass you for a period of time (currently a week).

When you block someone, you will be automatically blocked back by that person, so you won't be able to see each others' posts.

When the fixed period is over, you will both be released automatically, giving you another chance to treat each other better.

The admin, super-moderators, and moderators cannot block people or be blocked.

To block someone, visit the person's profile and click on the [ Block ] button shown below:

Enjoy your new power. But remember that you're also blocking yourself. wink

I would have loved to pick some stocks tomorrow that had not reached their qualification dates for dividend investment. But, most that I would like are heavy duty stocks, which will afford me to pick only very few units. sad

What is the effect of crashing crude oil on Nigerian Stock Market, given the role of oil in the economy?

Bull, Bear or Neutral?

There are professors of economics and top notch market analysts here.
Time to speak up.
Portfolios and networths could be in danger.

National budget is typicallyly benchmarked on $75/barrel oil price.
Oil is right now at around $60 and, I'm sure, headed down.

Govt is the biggest spender in the economy, and right now is already in deficit budget.

So what next?

Is it foreign investors that will come and mop cheap stocks when liquidity dries up in the market?
Or will Govt resort to borrowing to fund the budget and keep the economy bouyant until our precious oil recovers?
Government may likely do forward crude oil sales again (like in COVID). This time it might be up to $11 Billion.
If Dangote is liquid, I would say we renegotiate with those we did forward sales with and Dangote buys up some of the long term forward crude oil sales we already have.
Budget would also have to be reviewed and cut down and capital projects ran strictly by the private sector or FDI.

WHICH NIGERIAN BANKS PAY THEIR STAFF THE MOST, AND THE LEAST, IN 2024?

As inflation persists and the war for top talent intensifies, Nigerian banks are responding in markedly different ways when it comes to employee pay.
Nairametrics has analyzed the 2024 financial reports of 9 listed banks, and the findings reveal sharp contrasts in how banks structure compensation.
From executive-heavy organisations to lean branch-driven models, each bank’s strategy is reflected in how it pays its workforce.

This is not what I asked. I'm looking at companies' profit growth. What I'm telling you is that, despite some of these companies reporting massive increases in profit, when you adjust those figures to the dollar value of their respective periods, you’ll realize they actually made less real profit.

Let me explain: suppose a Nigerian company made ₦1,000,000 in profit after tax in 2014. At the 2014 exchange rate of ₦197 per dollar, that equates to $5,076. Now, let's say the company has grown its profit by 20% annually (CAGR). By 2025, that would amount to about ₦7,430,000 in profit. Converted at the current exchange rate of ₦1,600 per dollar, that gives you roughly $4,644. So, although the profit in naira terms has increased significantly over the last 10 years, the real value in dollars has actually decreased.

Only companies with a compounded annual growth rate above 22% since then would have experienced real profit growth in dollar terms. But how many companies fall into that category?

So, my point again is that outsized returns aren’t the whole story. We also need to look at real return when compared with stable economies. Going back to your calculation—a foreign investor whose Nigerian portfolio didn’t grow more than 8x from 2014 to date has effectively lost money. Don’t point to the few companies that achieved 20x to 30x returns in share value; we also have many that didn’t. A 2014 investor would have needed to be extremely lucky to pick only the top performers.
They will say we spend in naira and it does not matter , atimes ignorance is not bliss , always good to be diversified especially when devaluation is a big factor
