Mankind2024:
Happy new month of June to all my fellow self-investors and NSEMPA forumites! May this month bring growth, prosperity, and success to our investments and endeavors. 🌟
Today, I want to share my thoughts on the power of buy-and-hold investing and how it can be a game-changer for long-term wealth creation.
The power of buy-and-hold investing shines brighter when you tune out the noise. The 'Sell in May' adage is dead, at least for me. May 2025 brought explosive capital appreciation and substantial dividend returns to my portfolio. As expected, the catalysts for this growth are often overlooked by the crowd.
My strategic buys include millions of units of HONYFLOUR at N3.25 and IKEJAHOTEL at N2.45, while my worst purchase YTD is ELLAHLAKE @ N3.68.

Time is indeed my greatest ally, the gain is in the waiting, which is why I despise impulsive market decisions.
Inspired by investing legends like Warren Buffett, John Bogle, Peter Lynch, and Benjamin Graham, I've learned the value of patience. My NGX portfolio has taught me that as a self-taught investor, I'll always want more. I trust the market and believe in investing until my portfolio becomes a legacy asset.

If business moguls like Dangote, Jim Ovia, Femi Otedola, and Tony Elumelu trust the NGX with their billions, why shouldn't I? I'm prepared for market fluctuations and believe my portfolio is being positioned to withstand bear, downturns, selloffs, and even unlikely events.
I'm not a genius, just fortunate to have learned from the greatest American investors by reading their books. I'm now on the path to building a billion-naira NGX portfolio. The journey has just begun, and I'm hopeful to cross the finishing line. So help me God. Amen.

Lol.
I'm thrilled to read your comment.
My net worth is growing despite having no network with the exception of this faceless forum.
My mantra is simple: frugality, investment, and long-term holding. The often-overlooked secret to 'hold forever' is the peace of mind it brings – allowing you to sleep stress-free, knowing your investments are working for you.
Recently, I invested N2 million in Ecobank shares to average up, and surprisingly, my average purchase price dropped to N7.45k. This experience highlights one of the many benefits of a buy-and-hold strategy.

Experience suggests that stock traders often struggle with work-life balance, which can strain relationships. Some of the world's most renowned traders, like Jesse Livermore, have had tumultuous personal lives, including multiple divorces.
Stock investors, with their long-term focus and patient approach, may be more likely to prioritize stability and commitment in their personal lives, including their relationships. Warren Buffet, Peter lynch, John Boggle.

First, open a new page and go through the very first page of this forum at your own pace. As regards the stockbroker to use there are several established ones that members of the forum use from the time being.

I use Meristem, InvestNow (UnitedCapital) and Afrinvest cause they suit my personal needs. Find what works for you and you can bear as regards charges.

Feel free to drop a few questions for members of this forum to put you through.

Bigwings22:
How can one learn how to invest in the Nigerian Stock Market? Is it advisable? How about US stocks? Can one start small or do you need substantial amounts first? I only know Bamboo and Chaka as platforms to buy stocks in both Nigerian and US but the charges on Bamboo is much. I don't know why something like stocks that they want everyday people to be a part of will cost that much to get into especially for beginners. Also I hear about stocks paying dividends especially banks in Nigeria and makes me wonder if they pay the investors on Bamboo or just investors that registered with them at their banks.

I don't know how all these stuff works, would be glad if you helped out or anyone at all.

Actually, based on this analysis, you should run from Ellah. When people analyze a company that is barely making any sales by starting with total assets, you should instantly know they're not serious.

Come on, people: This forum is supposed to make us collectively better investors, not mugu.

The Dividend Allure: Nigeria's Banking Sector.
Nigeria's banking sector has seen a surge in dividend payments in recent years, with Access Bank, UBA, Stanbic IBTC, GTCO, and Zenith Bank leading the charge. While dividend payments can be an attractive feature for income-seeking investors, it's essential to look beyond the yield and understand the underlying fundamentals.

https://furtherafrica.com/2025/05/20/africas-most-profitable-banks-in-2024-south-african-lenders-lead-the-pack/

The Dividend Race:
In the 2024 financial year, these banks declared significant final dividends:
-Access Bank: N2.05k
- UBA: N3.00
- GTCO: N7.03
- Zenith Bank: N4.00
-Stanbic IBTC:N3.00
While these dividend payments may seem attractive, investors should be cautious of the following:
Sustainability: Can the banks maintain these dividend payments in the face of economic challenges or regulatory changes? We all can remember how the FGN curtailed the forex gains of banks.
Growth prospects: Are the banks prioritising dividend payments over investing in growth initiatives? Nope, they are very resilient.
Valuation: Are the stocks overvalued due to the high dividend yield, making them potentially vulnerable to correction? Nope, they are rather undervalued considering the inflation that ravaged Nigeria economy.

Investor Considerations:
Before investing in these banks or any dividend-paying stock, consider the following:
1. Financial health: Evaluate the bank's financial performance, including profitability, asset quality, and capital adequacy. Yes the banks are healthy and can pass any stress test.
2. Dividend history: Assess the bank's dividend payment history and consistency. Yes, they are very consistent in the past 5 years.
3. Growth prospects:Consider the bank's growth strategy and potential for long-term value creation. Yes, the banks tick this checklist. However, I would rank Access as the best bank here.
By being aware of the potential pitfalls and taking a thoughtful approach, investors can make informed decisions and avoid getting caught up in the dividend allure.

My NGX portfolio is growing thanks to dividend reinvestment. Unfortunately, the email address I used to create this account is no longer active, and I don't receive direct messages.
If you're considering investing in foreign stocks, I'd recommend exploring MSCI China and India indices. Global investors are increasingly allocating funds to these markets. In fact, my MSCI China investment outperformed the S&P by the end of May 2025.
