The founder of an Ibadan-based radio station, Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, has disclosed that he has better chances to win the governorship election in Oyo State if he decides to contest in 2027.

He disclosed this in a live broadcast with a caller from abroad who advised him against running for the Office of Governor of Oyo come 2027.

The caller said, “Don’t listen to those who are saying Oyo is calling Oriyomi Hamzat. They are only lying.

“Although you are helping the masses, don’t rely on them that when it is election time, they will vote for you. They will not.

“Don’t let them deceive you. Even the area where your radio station is located, if politicians take money there, you will lose the polling unit.

“It is true that you are a good person and qualified, but the masses will not vote for you.”

While responding, Hamzat dismissed such advice, saying discouraging comments would not deter him as he has the capacity to make his own political decision.


He said, “Don’t say they will not vote for me. You might even be the one that will push me to contest. I have my own brain. I don’t want to listen to any advice like this again.

“If I contest, nothing will happen. I will contest, and I will win. Don’t tell me that.

“You are telling me I won’t win, what is the meaning of that? Do you know the minds of those people that will vote? You are using yesterday to judge today.”

No one has the right to ask an aspirant not to vote or be voted for. Let everyone exercise their franchise freely and willingly.

Do you even realize that the alleged “Oyo n pe o” has two key strengths that are vital to winning elections?

1. Media – You dare not underrate this man’s local audience; the majority of them have voter’s cards.
2. Emotional manipulation – He knows how to play on people’s emotions to claim victimhood and/or earn undeserved sympathy. He has done it several times, and it has worked for him.

The third strength though I am unsure of its veracity is the ‘power of incumbency’. Whatever game this is, the Agodi Landlord is at the center of the pitch, blowing the whistle.

However, it would be a great shame to all technocrats, learned individuals, and well-to-do politicians in Oyo State if this nightmare (I hesitate to call it a dream) were to become reality.

A philosopher once said, “If you refuse to lead, you may be led by fools.” I mean no disrespect to anyone; I merely quoted a great philosopher.
I shall be watching from this angle.

Elections is not based on sentiments.

He might be popular on the streets, known by the people and have a cult-like following. But does he has the 20/25bn Naira to spend (in Ali Baba's words) to enter Agodi House or will the Oyo North/Central Senatorial District Coalition fold their hands to allow another Ibadan boy to be their Governor again
