I don't know if it can be created artificially but I think extreme changes in weather can cause it.

About 10 years ago a friend on mine to a sabbatical to attend a course in a university in the UK.

By the time she returned to Nigeria about 18 months later she had developed a gap in between her top front teeth which she had never had in the over 20 years I have known her.

Hers was caused by the cold weather
