Man Arrested For Converting Home To Abattoir In Lagos by aminauiade(op): 9:47am On Jun 24, 2025
Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment have arrested a man (identity undisclosed) for converting a residential building in the Iju area of the state into an illegal abattoir.

PUNCH Metro gathered from a statement by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Monday, that the suspect turned his residence, located on Alfred Williams Street, Iju Station, into a slaughterhouse following the closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir, Agege.

The illegal operation said to have been carried out in unhygienic conditions, reportedly endangered residents in the community who raised the alarm.

Wahab, in a post on his X (Twitter), said the property had been sealed and the suspect taken into custody.

Wahab said, Following reports from a concerned citizen, our enforcement team has taken immediate action at No. 12, Alfred Williams Street in Iju Station. The property owner had illegally converted his residence into an abattoir following the closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir, endangering the entire neighbourhood through unhygienic practices and profiting from this reckless operation.

The suspect is now in custody, and the premises have been sealed. This swift response demonstrates our zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of environmental violations, whether in designated facilities or residential areas.”

He commended residents for their vigilance, urging them to continue reporting illegal activities through the designated channels.

To all Lagosians, your vigilance makes our work possible. Continue reporting illegal activities via designated means,” he added.

PUNCH Metro reported on June 20 that, Wahab, during his visit to the Oko-Oba Abattoir market, announced the indefinite closure.

He stressed that the closure was due to the unsafe and unhygienic practices of traders in the market.

The food hygiene practices in this country, need to be overhauled. Our practices are too unhygienic to believe the products are for human consumption.

The sellers no send, as they’re just so concerned about their profit.

Good development. Gaps in proper environmental impact analysis is evident in many properties you see around these days.
Re: Man Arrested For Converting Home To Abattoir In Lagos by OctavianAC(m): 10:29am On Jun 24, 2025
Go and verify, I can bet you, the State government didn't provide any abattoir for the people of that area. Why did the LAG govt not provide an abattior for the people living in that area? If they have provided a better and more hygienic one in that area, he will either move to that place to do his business or he will go out of business.

Man must survive.
Closing a place where people sell to survive with providing an alternative location isn't the best.

Even the Oko Oba abbatoir is a nasty place to be ..I'm certain it's even worse than the man's residence
Extremely unhygienic in so many ways..
I'm sure the main reason of arrest was the levies and monies the man was charging..
Probably he didn't remit some to the right quarters..
So the "concerned" citizen stepped in and reported.
Not holding brief for the man's actions but I this is Naija..we know how it goes here

some places, they will call it jealousy for reporting what is wrong.like some unscrupulous elements hijacking innocent patients from the hospital to go operate in an unhygienic environment they call theater. They just want everyone to keep quiet till the whole system spoil patapata.
