It is value-weighted.
A company like DANGCEM (having high market capitalization) will sway the index easily... smiley

When you're big, you're BIG grin

How do dey even do the calculations for the ASI.
I think wayo dey the thing. How can few positive movement in big stock be dragging it up any how
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by KarlTom: 2:39am On Jul 21, 2025
The possibilities are numerous.
However, I don't think FOte$ will want to go for those extra just directly (even if they are made available to him).
He will likely use the upcoming RI to accumulate as much as possible thereby increasing his stake. That's one reason the SPV won't be holding it for long... smiley

NB: RCI/Stanbic also holds about 22% of GTCO shares for Institutional investors.
Mpeace:
It seems those first bank shares might end up in Ote$ hand. It's said to be with FG's trustee and a decision will be made in 2-3weeks as to where it will end up.

The claim of firstbank share buy is Renaissance capital. I am tempted to believe this guys are capable but this is nigeria and the politics behind is not yet known
Raider76:
Kai. You are too far behind in the news. This new line of rumor mill was already denied by the bank itself.

I don't think they will go through all the trouble of taking the bank from the hands of the Otudekos just to now give it to shaky hands. They said RC is aligned with Renaissance Capital. They also said Renaissance is big in GTCO. I think that should point to a good future FBN.

I am surprised the government is defending the naira still.
I was thanking the stability was result of removal of fuel subsidy and alhaji refinery.
I really don't understand again oh on the defending of naira after this major achievement. What is the government not telling us.
It is the job of central banks all over the world to maintain price stability by injecting FX into the FX market. That doesn’t mean they are defending the naira (quote on quote).
They sell and buy in the FX market to maintain stability rather than determining the price of the official market.

For instance, when Emiefele sold dollars into the market in 2022, he sold at a range of 400/450 which was way different from what the open market was willing to sell due to scarcity. Open market price was 750.

This was a drain on Banks and FG because they were not getting the needed revenue they should have been getting based on the open market rates of 750 which majority of importers were using at the time anyway.

When Cardoso sells currently, he sells at market rates of 1500 to ensure there is liquidity in the market irrespective of the price/rate and then allow the market determine the price based on the liquidity in the market. The CBN also gets the full value of the rates in naira at 1500 which doesn’t shortchange the CBN and the FG (no subsidy).

OoDeeA:
If wale releases his bonus shares, what will likely be the effect in the market?
The possible effect would depend on how/when he releases the shares.
There could be a jump in price if the bonus shares are released at a time that coincides with an overriding positive news in the market (e.g. very good financial results, acquisition of new oil blocks, special dividend, etc.).
The opposite could be the case if there is no positive news to sustain the price, so the law of demand and supply would set in and drag the price down.
