Man needs to take it easy in this country. Why will the rate of imprisoned persons not increased with the hardship and tendency to make it big in this country. Everyone is finding ways both legit and illegitimate. May we not be unfortunate in life.
Is that what you are going to tell the judge if you commit a crime?!

As much as possible avoid committing a crime in nigeria.. be law abiding and stay away from trouble.. our correctional facilities are hell on earth.
How is this possible after all this time of the vuvuzela interior minister hyping up his performance? Abi the off-your-mic former junior federal lawmaker is only about passports and immigration airport services as minister?

What a corrupt failure Olubunmi Tunji Ojo is, just like everyone in ebilokan’s APC administration.

Nigerian still living in d dark ages.

Can't we sent that work in government own establishment to developed countries and study how facilities are built and maintained.
This is sooooooooooo bad
Did ebilokan not live in Chicago for years?
Is he not always junketing in his new jet to different countries?

What other sending to developed countries are you talking about, when he said that he alone built Lagos to a world class city and state?

Are you calling Aṣiwaju ọmọlúwàbís a propagandist liar huh shocked

chisomkachy:
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s first supplementary budget includes a fleet of SUVs for himself and his wife, a presidential yacht and the renovation of his villa amid a cost-of-living crisis for some of the poorest people in the world.

The proposal — which seeks additional funding beyond the annual budget approved by Tinubu’s predecessor — comes as the government asks Nigerians to persevere through pain caused in part by a raft of economic reforms ushered in by the new president. Africa’s most populous country faces rampant unemployment, soaring food prices and a plummeting currency.

Federal lawmakers approved the president’s request for extra spending on Thursday, but eliminated the provision of 5 billion naira ($6.01 million) to buy a presidential yacht. Instead, they doubled the allocation to a student loan fund to 10 billion naira, according Abubakar Bichi, chairman of an appropriations committee in the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers approved 1.5 billion-naira proposed to purchase SUVs for the office of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu — an amount larger than that allocated to many individual federal colleges. The supplementary budget also proposes almost 6 billion naira to purchase SUVs for the presidency — more than the amount initially allocated to fund a student loan program for poor families.

As a lawyer, I visit prisons at least 3 to 4 times a month and I can tell you're absolutely correct about innocent persons in prison! A man is in Oko prison in Benin because he confronted his rich landlord who impregnated his daughter. It's sad

The day I visited a detained colleague at Oba prison in Abeokuta I couldn't hold back my tears. Not only because of the person I went to visit but because of the general conditions of the whole inmates. That particular prison is not fit enough for animals, let alone human beings. The extortions by the officers there is another big issue. All essential items I took there like garri, soap, toothpaste and other food items did not get to him. The officers hijacked everything and sold it to other inmates.
you shouldn't have bought any item for him. Just codedly give him the money in two potions, and he'll remit one of the portions to them as what you gave him!

We have heard and read so many different stories in Europe, America about people convicted and sent to prison only to find out that they are innocent after they had spent very, very long years in prison.

The man who confronted his Landlord for impregnating his daughter went about it in which way that resulted in him landing in prison.

Our prisons should never be made to be attractive or comfortable because in such instances some people deliberately commit crimes so that the can be put in prison to be fed and sheltered. No paying of rent, no paying for food.

That only shows acceptance. And of course it is your fault.

Anyway, let me paint another scenario. Have you and maybe your family ever tried to board a bus that is already full to maximum capacity only for the passengers and the driver doing their best to still create space so that you can be carried along for the journey, an over load? You see, deplorable states of things are mostly our own making due to acceptance.

That is why it is a Prison!

Trust Nigerians it is this condition of our prison that keeps many doing everything to avoid being thrown there.

Anything better than this will become vacation spot for some Nigerians.
Re: Overcrowded, Overlooked: Inside Ogun Correctional Centre Crisis by Urgent1Million: 1:05pm On Aug 04, 2025
The prisons are supposed to be places of corrections and rehabilitation.
Even worse is that Nigeria security operatives sometimes arrest innocent people and the courts will jail them for offences they did not commit.
This is so inhumane!!

These are the solutions

1. Build more modern facilities
2. Put humane daily lives materials eg beds blankets, water, wc , modern kitchen etc
3. States should provide more vehicles to facilitate to enhance inmates appearance in court. The situation where by Police and other arresting agencies will be given 100s of vehicle while prison where they eventually dump these criminal are given one or none at all is wrong and counter productive.
4. FG and States should collaborate to improve the correctional centers to international standards. We will never have a safe society if we continue to ignore the prisons.

I went there on one of his court days. I've already seen him at the court. I gave him money but they didn't allow him to get the items at the court and the warder dey tell me say they were still going to lock him up with others inside one small cell inside the court premises until they round up all cases for the day which might be getting to 6pm. It is then they will drive all of them back to prison inside black maria. His lawyer then advised me to go drop the items at Oba prison. A very far and remote location -- I spent 4k on bike. I got there, they entered my name and register the items. Some items like grinded pepper were rejected but they took others in. Na that garri pained me pass because e plenty o. Na grade-A Ijebu garri. I had to branch en route Abeokuta to one village for Ibadan road to buy that garri. Weeks later after my colleague had been acquitted, e day tell me say dem no deliver anything o. Omo the thing still dey vex me till today. 😡
Well, something seems off, I am familiar with the prison system, because I also run an humanitarian outfit that brings in relief materials for these inmates. So, I am familiar with this process.

What I know is that as you went there to visit, they will search you and your luggage, what you brought for your friend. They will reject what they don't want and you will go home with them and allow you to take in what is allowed.

You will still carry those items to the visiting area where you will see your friend. You will hand over your garri and other items to him personally. So, what I don't understand is how the garri went missing? Who did you hand over the garri to? Cos the staffs are meant to check it for contrabands, they are not to take possession of it cos it's not theirs.

As for the court incident, I know that their laws forbids them from conducting visits in court, if they allow you interact too much and give him money or food items there, they may get reported and they will get into trouble. And it is a standard practice for the court to build a Jailors cell in the courts where they put their inmates while waiting for other court hearings to end. It's a standard.

we all need to avoid trouble. Crimes and it's consequences is no childs play. I pray God divinely release all innocent people imprisoned by our incompetent courts and security arresting organization soon. Amen

Seems you don't get my point. He was still in court when I went ahead to deliver the items at the prison, with the hope they'll deliver them to him when he returns. Unfortunately they didn't.
