Dangerous: I Saw This Big Bad Black Thing About 30 Minute Ago And I Did This.. by SuperOnyi(op): 11:03pm On Aug 18, 2025

It was so big and even longer than my arm. I felt that uncertainty life throws at us rush through me. I paused and keep looking at it with my phone's torch. It was a big, fat, and long snake. My brain was trying to process what decision to take.

It didn't attack but I couldn't even see its head, it was probably planning and strategizing on how to protect itself too... plotting and digging on the best way to strike before I strike it dead.

I watched it coiled itself into the dried leaves covered in dirt. A feeling which I can best describe as 'pride' keep slowly pushing me to attack. The last snake I tried to strike was sunbathing just next to my mother's farm, the good Lord made her see it first before throwing her foot closer.

I strike twice but missed it and it dashed into the farm. I was so angry I almost combed the whole farm. I did see it as it ran for its life. I was worried for my mother and everyone's safety.

So seeing this mighty big, black, and long snake — that 'pride' wanted to prove that I wasn't scared even though I had never k...illed a snake before. I stood there looking at it even though I couldn't see it or even the head. Mama Safiyat would never forgive me if it bit me in that favorite spot she enjoys covering with her mouth.

The primal instinct — that same one — that allows me to differentiate between urinating with my eyes open and urinating in the dream told me it was better I take an L and swallow it.

"Swallow your pride even if you end up with a pot belly, SuperÓnyi. He who leaves a black snake as big and long in the dark and moves on, will live to eat a sweet bitter leaf soup and akpu. Then he can fight again if it decides to be stupid enough to come around again."

I nodded my head, turned my back, and faced what's ahead of me.

Good decision.

Some people instinctively would want to kill a snake even when the snake poses no threat to them. I was once guilty of that too

I have come across a snake moving towards the service lane road and would have been killed by on coming vehicle but i had to direct the snake back to the shrubs it came from.

Another time, a snake and I abruptly chanced upon each other as i came out of the office door, the snake ran off while i jumped back to pickup stone to stone it...an action i regretted since it was no threat to me...though it escaped but the stone did grazed it.

Hmmm Mama Sefiyah is really treating you well.

I had a similar encounter. If not for my phone torchlight. I would have stepped on it. It was curled on a sandy road path. The time was around 8.00pm. it was dark and no street light. I was returning to my base after visiting my friends. A few steps to it I notice it's camouflage body curled in the sand. My hands are empty, no stones and stick around to give it a good strike. After splits seconds of thinking what to do. I decided to let peace reign and quickly continue my journey to my destination.

After 3 days. I returned to the community and heard the story of how the snake was killed by a vehicle that same night. I was told the car stepped on it with the tyres over 6 times of front and reverse movement before the huge snake gave up the ghost.

I was glad I didn't get myself into the trouble of trying to kill what can not die easily and peacefully.

All these snake activists sef. undecided

Most people instinctively wants to kill snakes because they can't differentiate between venomous or non venomous ones.

A snake that doesn't pose a threat to you today could harm you or someone else tomorrow when in a bad mood.

Abi you think say snake nor dey chop breakfast? ......Just pray you shouldn't come in contact with that kinda snake, e go use pepper eye attack you.

I've come to understand that these snakes (or wild animals) are also trying to defend themselves too. They consider us dangerous the same way we do to them.

I'm no animal activist but i do appreciate animal lives afterall i cannot create one.
When i walk on the road and i see a snail, I'm 99% sure someone or a vehicle will step on it...but i do pick it up the moment it comes to my awareness and throw far away from the road, into the shrubs/bush rather just ignoring it.

Try to read my previous reply on the snake matter before jumping into the fray.

It is in human nature to do so, otherwise, the consequences might be dire.

It was no threat to you, you say?
Snakes don't give warnings whether they're a threat or not.
They just strike when they get the first opportunity.
Just as it is in [your] human nature to strike first when you come across them.

Next time, you might not be so lucky.
As snakes don't send your "kind" nature.
That's why they're snakes.
They will not return the favour.

Yes, it was no threat to me because I did it from a safe distance. I'm not stupid. You seems to have this erroneous belief that I would lovingly speak to it to go back to its habitat while petting its glistering skin.

Snakes don't give warnings whether they're a threat or not.
Snakes do not go about looking for humans to snake bite do they now?

They just strike when they get the first opportunity.
No, snakes do not always strike at the first opportunity. While they can strike defensively if they feel threatened, they are more likely to avoid confrontation and try to escape if they can. Strikes are often a last resort when a snake feels cornered or threatened. This includes situations where they are surprised, stepped on or harassed....

Just as it is in [your] human nature to strike first when you come across them.
No, it is not in human nature to strike first. It is considered safer and more in line with human nature to maintain a safe distance from snakes rather than striking them first.

What's your first instinct when you see a snake? You run to keep a safe distance.

Next time, you might not be so lucky.
As snakes don't send your "kind" nature.
That's why they're snakes.
They will not return the favour.
For me it's not about kind nature...it's awareness, this consciousness...

You weren't chasing after something or running from what was chasing you. Both of you were saving yourselves from each other grin.
