I think social media platforms like tiktok and Instagram should be banned from the whole of Africa.

We still have a long way to go and things like tiktok and Instagram aren't helping, most of the time, all they ever do is promote division and deception.

It’s not true for me because I don’t use social media but I can see how it would influence others negatively if they use it in a negative way. You only see and hear what you choose to indulge in.

To me, social media is doing more harm than good.
Everyone is having a warped mentality about love, relationships and money.

Those warped ideas existed for many centuries before social media showed up, revealing them to all and sundry! People are finally being forced to have those conversations we never got around to having, all thanks to social media. And I can definitely see how many are scared that their brand of bullsheet will eventually be brought to light, likely on social media. grin

From a broader perspective sha, this claim that social media has damaged dating and society holds considerable truth, but the root cause is more systemic than gendered as she put it.

Those who designed social media and the social media platforms ensured that they are driven by engagement algorithms, have amplified unrealistic portrayals of beauty, relationships, and success, conditioning both men and women to adopt distorted expectations.

Women are often targeted with ''modern woman''/''boss bitch'' /''I dont need a man''/ ''ill choose a bear'' content that emphasizes hypergamy, luxury, and perfection, while men are pressured to meet increasingly unattainable standards of wealth, appearance, and performance. Dating apps have further turned connection into something less than even a game where you swipe this and click that. It has simply sort of ''gamified'' connection, turning people into swipes and options, rather than encouraging meaningful relationships. This environment will continue to lead to discontent, insecurity, and mistrust on both sides, not because one gender started it, but because the systems incentivize superficiality over substance.

While media, influencers, and tech companies helped create this culture, individuals also share responsibility when they accept and follow these types of narratives without thinking critically about what it is turning them into. People need to step back and even become aware too of these influences. People need to choose to engage in relationships with more intention and realism. The street may not be smiling (no dulling for street), but you don’t have to become like the street either. The key isn’t to blindly trust or become cynical..none of those extremes are good, but it is good to be strategically aware: To understand the social dynamics at play, set clear boundaries, and let people earn your openness rather than giving it away freely. Instead, move through it with your eyes wide open and your values firmly in place.
