Also, companies comes to the market to seek capital, through IPO or Right issue. internally, what happens is they convert some of their assets(previously unconverted) to shares. This passes through regulations and SEC before approval to avoid issuing more than what you have or ambiguous/undefined/leased assets, etc

For example, lets say company A bought a new asset at ₦70,000 current valuation and wants to issue it at shares to the public(PO) at ₦30 per share, it will be converted at its nominal value. That is:
₦70,000/₦0.50k= 140000 so 140,000 shares will be issued.

That is also why the ₦0.50k is always stated to show at what price it's assets were converted to shares..

But nevertheless such shares will be purchase at its Real Value;(
selling price at the NGX or listed price if its public Offer(PO) or Right offer price(RO)).
In this example case, OS purchased @ ₦30(Real Value)

Also, if you go to the equity section of any financial statement,
Share capital is made up of OS X nominal Value
(OS X ₦0.50k).
It makes sense because this is the actual amount the assets were divided to issue the shares in the first place
(as shown above).

Share Premium
on the other hand is now
(Real price -Nominal price) X OS
For the given example above, share premium= (₦30-₦0.50) X 140,000= ₦29.5 X 140,000 OS =₦4,130000

Both addition of share Premium and share capital make up the equity Capital of a company.

Most people will tell you forget that nominal price(₦0.50k) as a common shareholder or investor but focus on the real price("₦30" ) as the case may be which is understandable as you may not need it in your money making venture. Usually rests with the company management and their accountants.
But you seem curious. smiley
few others might benefit.

Is there any rule tying publicly listed companies to the 50 kobo nominal value? When will the NGX moved to ₦1 or so considering the economy?

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) has suspended, effective September 1, 2025, the trading of shares in three insurance companies: Regency Alliance Insurance Plc, International Energy Insurance Plc, and Universal Insurance Plc.
you didn't get me..
Anytime their is a company suspension from NGX, at least an insurance company must make the list.

The day an insurance company does not make the list. That is the beginning of their Glory days.

I believe it's related to the minimum share price of a stock.

A stock with nominal value of ₦1(cost price) can go as low as ₦0.20k Selling price.
Selling price is far lower than cost price.

For NGX to move to ₦1, then the minimum selling price will also be raised as well.

Never bothered to find out though but that's what I think about it.
If the smallest companies are consistently above ₦1 selling price even in their worst days, probably they will do it..

Even with the economy, companies are still making EPS of 1-10k grin

There is no rule tying publicly listed companies to 50 kobo nominal value. Most listed companies' share capital have 50kobo nominal values. However, some have N2.00 nominal value (AxaMansard) and 20kobo (or 2kobo?) for MTN and InterBrew.

See share capital nominal values as currency denominations used in an economy.

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by KarlTom: 8:06am On Sep 09, 2025
There's no rule tying them.
Companies can pick any par value not less than 50k.

The existing rule (about par value) says that if the par value is 50k, the SP can fall [and trade] below 50k.
However, If the par value is above 50k, the SP cannot be traded below the par value.
e.g. Mansard and NEM are currently ₦2 and ₦1 resp. ARADEL was ₦10 before they listed on the NGX... smiley

I’m really amused when I read posts like this — the assumption that you know all the available information and can therefore judge who is dumb or not. Then the market moves, and you won’t see people like you coming out to apologize when that same stock doubles. Respect everybody’s choices. You don’t necessarily know more than the person who put their money on the line. You don’t know their time horizon, and you don’t know the game he or she is playing.

Also, you don’t judge a decision solely by its outcome. The world is probabilistic — something may work for the wrong reasons, or fail even when the reasoning is sound. Unless you know the reasoning behind a move, don’t judge. lipsrsealed

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by kintus(m): 9:34am On Sep 09, 2025
MOST COMMONLY: Dividend is calculated based on the quantity of shares held.
Types of dividends:
1. Cash Dividend
2. Stock (or Scrip) Dividend
3. Bonus Issue
4. Interim Dividend
5. Final Dividend
6. Special Dividend
7. Capital Return / Liquidation Dividend

✅ Summary:
Cash and stock dividends are the most common on NGX.
Interim and final describe timing.
Special, bonus, and capital returns are less frequent but relevant for corporate actions and portfolio planning.

Assuming Zenith declares and interim dividend of 0.5k per share....and shareholder 'A' has 20,000units of zenith bank shares ---- shareholder 'A' will be entitled to 20,000*0.5 = N10,000.
