RodgersAkpafu:I know a govt official that bought 20m units of starcomms shares at IPO based on say broker recommended it to him. That guy did zero analysis what so ever. He bought it simply because it was a place to hide money. You think if people like Seyi Tinubu wan buy shares e dey do analysis? Na stolen dumb money full Nigeria oh. People buying mansions with no plan of what to do with it. Enter Maitama and you go shock |

nosa2:Starcomm, taking us down memory lane. Investors and shareholders lost their fund. I don't understand why management could not come up with a strategy to adapt to the changing dynamics of the industry |

emmanuelewumi:In my opinion, it was the case that the CDMA technology on which those companies were founded was poised against GSM and GSM won. All the CDMA tech companies had no choice but to close shop despite investments. Maybe regulation made it difficult or impossible to transform from CDMA license to GSM if that was the license you obtained. They must have seen the signs and should have transformed. The Closed User Group (CUG) of CDMA seemed an answer to high cost of phone calls then. You paid a monthly fixed fee on a line and each member of the CUG could talk freely and unlimitedly to members within the group. Everybody must pay. There was a coordinator. Maybe a precursor of sort to the whatsapp group. Lol. It was the literal wireless intercom. Useful for companies and groups. I think they required a certain number to register. Maybe 30 or so. (I think Glo was also doing same later). By the time per second billing became a thing across all network, Econet (Airtel), MTN, GLO, and phone use grew, CUG wasn't that viable for the CDMA companies anymore as usage must have gradually shrinked. Another factor was that then, you could not just buy a phone and plop in a CDMA sim. The likes of starcomms sold phones with the sim. You chose from whatever was being offered. Though good durable phones that matched the standard of the time, the coming of new ranges of Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson with their trendy, sleek designs that were adapted to GSM technology, offered more options and competition. All this even predate the iphone - android "war". The stack was against them. CDMA still exists though but I guess not in Nigeria where even landline seem obsolete. |
