Hookup Culture And The Rise Of ‘soft Life’ In Lagos by phosky(op): 9:02am On Sep 08, 2025
The New Face of Lagos Youth Lifestyle

Once upon a time, the ideal Nigerian youth dream was simple: get a stable job, get married early, and build a family. Fast forward to 2025, and things look very different in Lagos, Nigeria’s cultural capital. A new trend has taken over conversations among young people — hookup culture and the pursuit of “soft life.” Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Today, many youths prioritize comfort, luxury, and independence over traditional expectations of marriage and family. The rise of hookup culture reflects these changing values, creating a massive shift in Lagos social dynamics.
What Exactly is the “Soft Life”?

The phrase “soft life” has become a buzzword among Lagos youths. It represents:

A life of ease and comfort without unnecessary struggle.

Prioritizing luxury, enjoyment, and travel over saving for the future.

Saying no to “hardship” and yes to “enjoyment.”

Social media plays a huge role in shaping this lifestyle. From Instagram influencers flaunting trips to Dubai, to TikTokers showing off the latest designer brands, Lagos youths are constantly reminded that living well is the new measure of success.
The Rise of Hookup Culture

Alongside the soft life trend, hookup culture has gained prominence. Unlike past generations that emphasized early marriage, many Lagos youths now see casual relationships as more realistic.

Why?

Economic struggles: High unemployment and rising cost of living make marriage less affordable.

Global influence: Western culture, music, and Nollywood movies normalize casual dating.

Technology: Dating apps and social media create endless options for quick connections.

Freedom over commitment: Many prefer the flexibility of casual relationships to the “burden” of family responsibilities.

Statistics Behind the Shift

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), youth unemployment stands at over 40%, making financial stability before marriage a challenge.

A 2019 NOI Poll revealed that 64% of young Nigerians delay marriage due to economic reasons.

Social media usage among Lagos youths is over 80%, fueling exposure to hookup-friendly culture.

A study from UNICEF shows that Nigerian youths are increasingly prioritizing self-fulfillment and personal freedom over societal expectations.

The Clash with Tradition

Not everyone is happy about this shift. Older generations still emphasize the traditional Nigerian family system, where marriage is the ultimate goal. Churches and mosques often preach against hookup culture, while parents continue to pressure their children to settle down.

Yet, Lagos youths argue that they would rather “soft life now, than suffer in a broken marriage later.”
The Double-Edged Sword

While hookup culture and soft life provide freedom and enjoyment, critics argue it comes with downsides:

Emotional instability: Many casual relationships lack long-term commitment, leading to heartbreak.

Health risks: Increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Weakening family values: The traditional bond of marriage is being eroded.

On the flip side, supporters see it as youths taking control of their lives, prioritizing mental health, financial independence, and happiness over outdated traditions.
Final Thoughts

The rise of hookup culture and the soft life trend in Lagos shows how Nigerian youths are rewriting cultural expectations. It reflects a generation that values flexibility, enjoyment, and personal freedom over societal pressure.

Whether it’s a passing trend or the new normal, one thing is certain: Lagos will remain the center stage where Nigeria’s evolving youth lifestyle plays out.

Hookup was fuelled by the fact that young men had money to waste because life was not hard then as it is now. Now that Tinubu has struck, has it not reduced drastically?

Exalting people that want to live soft life without working and earning it legit?

Why make Lagos the centre of your article when it's possibly worse in Abuja and although arguable, Port-harcourt.

The new face of Lagos youth lifestyle are Techies in Lagos doing a whole lot, and every other legit young men and women out here doing their thing, not your hookup and thieves you call yahooyahoo.

Keep your woke publications that do not in any way help Lagos society to yourselves.

When parent keep giving birth to kids they can't take care of that is the result. I don't really blame most ladies going into hook up, in as much they can take care of themselves and not be a threat to national security. Hook up is better then kidnapping, arm robbery and all that.

The hook up lifestyle is everywhere not only in Lagos. Have you had time to visit or stay in Abuja? BDSM, Scissorcing, call it any name you want. A lot is happening in Nigeria.

My advise for every man out there. Do a deep search on her background before you even ask her out.
Ask for her social media handles. Some will tell you they don't have one. Do your own research and find out. Many are wifing retired hoes and they're not aware of it.

Lastly if you're going to fornicate, have the lights tuned on. A lot of men are digging herps in the name of pleasure. You're finished especially if you're a married man. angry

It is not only Lagos oooh. Almost every part of Southern Nigeria. No thanks to socila media and influence from music and entertainment so called role models.

The youths are not even any longer interested in Religion. To teach them about Hell or Heaven is difficult. This is also escalated by rogue pastors preaching everything about prosperity. The prosperity gospel from modern day pastors are not helping Christianity at all. Again what we have are criminal politicians everywhere.

The country is where Jesus will start judgemnet

Hmm
Where do i start from.
Cockroaches everywhere.

70 percent of the young ones are doing hookup.
Meaning your chance of marrying a retired hookup person is also 70 percent.

Terrible times ahead for those considering marriage. The endgame or time will be terrible for a lot.

Well we are all in this together.

Nobody is going anywhere.

If you say soft life and money is the cause of hookup culture, what about those who patronize them, how did they make money? Is it soft life too?

I pity younger generation, no more love and bond in relationship as it used to be, .......only sex & money and when they tired, they separated by mutual consent, and hunting for next sex partners continue.
More reason while lots of toxicity in marriage after few years of coming together and by extension, collapsing of marriage institution on daily basis.

Girls with rich family still do hookup. For them it's a trendy thing that shows class.

I slept with this man that drives this car, look at all the hotel videos or photos I take. Look at me in a restaurant with a nicely made cocktail.

Crazy

Even the ones you want to take seriously will expect you to treat them like a hookher

kidnapping is bad and a crime, but let be honest with ourself Yahoo isn't a crime. I know of many guys who don't force cleint to send them money, they do willingly. How will you feel you open your phone and see a white man sending you nude, those white bring this upon them self so I don't blame most guys out hustling. I have a app where some ladies in Nigeria sell nude to those Yahoo boys to work with. What should we call this too. But of them are hustling to survive.

The harsher the economy the higher the increase in hook ups. It is in Lagos that I hear there are different kinds of hook ups.
If economy biter, where are they seeing the huge money throwing away for hookers?

It is supposed to reduce the hook up business, during times of economy hardship. If no money to throw at hookers, the business would die a natural death.

Hmmm!

Our conservative culture has been washed away with civilization!

Those who are blaming the harsh economy are mistaken! Where is the wages for hook-up coming from? You may see them small girls with big god riding the latest benz without any tangible job!

There is no difference between Yahoo and Kidnapping. In both cases, you are getting money off individuals without their consent.

so what are they taking of.
Some girls doing hook up are actual sponsoring them self to school or there sibling. They can't just run into hook up if responsibility don't come. I once try to chat a lady on Facebook, she agree to come spend the night, only for her to ask me how much I will give her in the morning that her husband will ask for the money she make from work.... That statement alone make me block her when I sense she was married.
