Lady Stunned As German Man Cancels Date Over Lateness by alphonsoolajide(op): 7:04am On Sep 26, 2025
A young woman has stirred heated conversation online after revealing that her German date abruptly cancelled their outing because she arrived late.

In a TikTok video, the lady identified as @.dolphine.bosibori shared that she was almost at the venue when she received a message from the man, informing her that the date was off. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

A German man just cancelled our date because I was late and only told me when I had almost gotten to the location,” she wrote.

Mixed Reactions Trail Her Story

The revelation sparked debate in the comment section, with many defending the man’s decision by highlighting how important punctuality is in German culture. Others, however, sympathised with her, arguing that cancelling so abruptly was extreme.

Some reactions included:

Werkstatt: “In Germany, being late is very disrespectful. It might not be intentional for others, but here, it’s a dealbreaker.”

mari: “For the fact that you didn’t say how late you were, I’m guessing you left home when you were supposed to already be there.”

Farmor: “He should have told you earlier, but lateness without reason is rude—especially on a first date.”

Victoria 👸🏼🇫🇮🇮🇹🧿: “For girls, it’s okay to be late! But good that he showed his character early.”

drakuhl: “Being late is a sign of disrespect. He saw the red flag and walked away.”

Lady Defends Herself

Amid the backlash, the lady clarified that this wasn’t their first meeting but actually their seventh date. She also insisted she was only four minutes away from the venue when the man cancelled.

“It’s the 7th date… we basically know each other,” she responded.

What else was she expecting ?
If you arriving late for an appointment, due to unforeseen circumstances, courtesy demand you communicate and apologize ahead of expected time.
Been punctual means you value and take the appointment serious, hence you must be ahead of the appointed time.
Let's value time and use it wisely.

Germans generally don't tolerate late coming no matter the circumstance behind it. You even have to come before the time, and to them, you came on time.

A date and interview should be treated as same. You are doing yourself a favour by attending the both at agreed time

Since this was her 7th date, I'm certain this wasn't the first time she was late. He was simply teaching her a lesson.

I'm an estate agent and many agents and clients are fond of showing up late for inspections in Nigeria.

It's very infuriating.

Its their 7th date. He must have cautioned her severally but still chose to stick to "African time."

The man put on the reset button.

Punctuality is one of the major ways to demonstrate respect (for self and those you deal with) and dedication. I too cannot put up with being late.

Of course, we are humans, and are imperfect. If there is a genuine reason to be late, it should be communicated on time. In my entire work history, it's hard to believe, but I tell you here that I don't ever recall being late. I've worked in an international organization, taught in several secondary schools, and now working as a medical doctor. Across all these platforms, lateness was nowhere close to me. I recall the time I was in an international organization, I almost always sign after the cleaners. In the hospital I currently work in, I've never ever come to work late, not even by a second. I'm able to achieve all these effortlessly, I just have to wake up early and hit the road early. And we have four kids we prepare for school and all that.

While I worked in a teaching hospital in SE Nigeria, whenever it was time to take over a call duty from a colleague, I often showed up 20 to 30 minutes early (around 7:30am, for a call that would typically start by 8am). I like to acclimatize (I usually chill in the call room and plan my day). Also, showing up early is very relieving for those that may likely have gone through hell throughout the night. It will interest you to know that there are colleagues that would show up 10 to 20 minutes late, or more!

My point is, over here, a lot of us have issues with being punctual. We call it "African man time". I disagree with this term, there is nothing African about being late.

Now, back to the story. I cannot judge whether or not it was extreme to call off the date, we don't even know how late the lady was. I'm also not familiar with the German culture. So, it would be hard to make an objective comment here.

But if I had a date/any appointment and the person comes in late (without a good reason), I'll feel bad, and may make some conclusions about the person. I'm not sure I would have cancelled the date sha, not before calling this person to find out what's up. I mean, the person may be in a situation beyond his/her control...like a medical emergency, a traffic situation, etc.

In conclusion, I'd like to use this opportunity to urge us all to try to be punctual in all of our dealings. Time is one resource that once spent, it cannot be gotten back. Don't waste people's time, please. Be more responsible, show up at the time you agreed to be there. Being late is actually very irritating.

Germans are well known for their punctuality, it's a culture to them and if you're running late, you need to inform the person beforehand. Cultural understanding is very important!

By the way, the lady involved is based in Germany and she is NOT Nigerian... Make una no turn am to bashing thread. 😂

Of course it would be a black woman. We blacks are lacking so much value..

Thank God from basic training i got in my GT years. Same attitude to work in like to instill in my younglings at work by example.

Once it’s 8am and I am not at the entrance of my place of work. I send a running late text. Once i am not in by 8am, they know already that it’s either i step in within 1 minute or they get a text. They see the way i conduct myself and they follow without me telling them.

How can you be late, you still don’t have the common sense to communicate. I avoid people with low standards, i shows in the smallest of their dealings

Thanks so much for these words of advice. It's a wonderful contribution.

Punctuality is the sole of business, as they say.
Although, there may be some very few periods in our lives when we can't help but be late to appointments or meetings due to some unexpected or uncontrollable circumstances. But lateness shouldn't be a habit of ours.
Being punctual is a sign of being a responsible person. And countless doors of greatness have been opened just because of being punctual. It's a good way to get ahead of many others in life.

Now that’s what a real man looks like. If I were a woman, that’s exactly the kind of man I’d be dating. I just knew it would be a Black girl who’d be surprised to see a man standing firm on his standards.

My rule of thumb; Any meeting you arrived on time, you are late.
Any meeting you arrived late, you don't value it enough.
Let's learn to arrive meetings ahead of schedule time, especially one which you agreed to the time with other participant(s)
