What the tax man will be looking at is your total cumulative sales in a financial year and the gain on it.
My thinking is that from January 2026 and within that year, all sales transactions is what matter irrespective of whether one has over a billion naira in the portfolio.
If one has over a billion valuation from past 5 years and into 2026, then sales of shares not exceeding the trigger points are made, there should not be CGT
You bought the stock for N10 million and then sold after 5 years for N30 million.

What will you pay as your CGT

It can't be retrogressive. Assuming the portfolio was worth N300 million about 5 years ago.

The law became effective in January 2026. By then the value of the portfolio was N1 billion, by the time the investor will liquidate his portfolio in December 2026. He could only realize N900 million, what will he pay as CGT

Any thing met on your portfolio will be considered
Any green regardless of the year of acquisition will be copied and sent to tax office
Wow.
This is not funny at all.

Many stocks started from humble beginnings.
Imagine those who bought shares that have made more than 20x and are still holding. It means whether they sell next year or in future, they have set the time for CGT on those hue gains unless they sell now before the new law. OMO this is neck pressing

I still conclude that you will pay anything on the green regardless but under the new tax law

Gain is gain regardless the year you bought.

What people does in developed country is to sell and rebuy if you still want to hold the stock moving forward

OnCe again don't sleep on it

We will need a tax lawyer for proper interpretation.

The law will become effective in 2026, why should the application be back dated?

This is not true cos the gains will be locked in at your brokers from the point you bought up until you sold copied and sent to tax office.

No way out bro

You are better off selling out all the stocks in which you make good gains this year hold your cash in your brokerage account and patiently taking positions in stock that will really do good numbers to cover for your tax levels

We just need to get used to it

I think moving forward is the best time to position in

The sales can also be staggered to ensure gains fall under the trigger for each financial year. But this will be unfair to tax past gains into the new era

One can smartly stagger the sales of those shares over time ensuring for each sales, the gain is under the threshold and send those money to the bond market or reinvested in stocks and avoid the CGT.
There is no point rushing to sell all now . If one has been holding for this long, then one can still hold further since you are not taxed for holding but only for a realized gain from sales valued up to a gain of N10 million or sales over N150 million. We will overcome

If everything is sold in 2026, then CGT should be on the N20 million gain. But if the sales are staggered with gains from each sales less than N10 Million for each year then no CGT. Or if the sales were immediately reinvested within the same year then no CGT.

This is not possible. Have u factored devaluation over all that yrs.So if I have bought a stock for 1 naira over 15 yrs.And it is 20 naira ,u will just calculate tax straight on the gain without considering what ever happened in the 15 yrs.
Some people are just trying to use the CGT to see if they can create panic
Not everything one reads here on the CGT should be taking serious. So those who bought the shares since the business was listed and has never sold. How do u know if one was not paying CGT on the investment all these yrs.
Abeg make some people here they take am easy

That should be the logical thing to do. The application should not be retrogressive.

The price of those stocks from 1st January 2026 should be assumed as the purchase price...

Assuming Presco is N1500 on the 1st of January 2026. 100k units will be worth N150 million.

If the investor sells all his holdings in December 2026 at N2500 per share or got approximately N250 million from the sale. Then he will pay CGT on the N100 million profit.

I am of the opinion that they also need to give allowance for inflation. A good investment ought to hedge inflation

This form of rebasing is the most appropriate thing to do. I have a feeling that this CGT matter will end up in court because from all the webinars I have attended and enquiries I have made, the CGT is retrospective which is a terrible decision by the authors

Definitely thr will be court cases if they try it.It is the duty of the court to interpret the law.
You want to collect CGT from people as way back as when BA T was running his games in Chicago while some people whr investing in the capital market. Lol
He should tell us the business he ever created in private capacity as a nigeria that benefited people. You want to tax the remaining life out of people so that u can see more to loot.

U went for bank 70% forex gain,u went for pension fund,u went for unclaimed dividend, u went for dormant account money. Now u are after capital gains on equities

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by crownprince2017: 11:35am On Sep 27, 2025
I think portfolio value as at the day of new tax law implementation should be use as cost, withholding tax should be removed because of CIT and inflation should be adjusted for before levying tax.

We need clarity on this.

Based on what I'm seeing, I think long term investors should have less to worry about.
I also believed, this new tax law will reduce market manipulation to a greater extent.

He only talked about FIRS being copied na.

I believed Nigerians teaching chinko how to drag the price down and accumulate so that they can accumulate more voting rights, I believed minority guys that dragged them to court realises this and try to play their own side of the game.

I believed both parties are so focused on minority ownership structure.

We watch, October 7 is not far again.
