ROFLMAO. The comments are always funny. They are annoying when you need proper information on something. Copy and paste the sentence to Google’s translate. The people speak too many languages so they default to the one they’re comfortable in to air their opinion. |

Why should we use English when we mostly understand each other's languages? English is exhausting... Whenever I get home from work, I have to rest a bit because I'd be tired from speaking English from 9am to 5pm... I only use it here because I have no choice since it's a foreign forum. My husband speaks to me in Sotho and I in return speak to him in Sepedi. You'll find me engaging in Zulu, Tsonga, Venda, Sotho, Tswana, Sepedi, and Swati commentaries... ... And gossiping in English on social media doesn't slap the same as when using vernaculars. |

You can't rob people of their cultural expression and expect them to be fully integrate. It's how the pidgin English emerged. ![]() |

Samantha125:You don't understand the point. We Nigerians speak our various native languages at our various homes. We are talking about why would SA come online on social media and start writing trash? An average South African would be like.. as I came back from work, I saw tysbosgu heueokbgs hyyejakofgebja btyahhjoo The question is why is that so? Why not just complete your sentence in English since you're engaging with people on FB |

I'm from the Sepedi tribe and it's mutually intelligible with Sotho and Tswana... So we can easily understand each other most of the time. I learnt Zulu by watching Zulu programmes on TV while reading the subtitles and by listening to their music, I'd search for their lyrics and translations... The only thing I find challenging till this day is their clicks, I can't pronounce them, my Sepedi tongue is too stubborn... So whenever I have to say something that has a click, I'd either code switch to English or Sepedify it... ![]() Swati is mutually intelligible with Zulu, so if you understand Zulu, then it wouldn't be that difficult for you to understand Swati... Apparently, it is the drunken version of Zulu... ![]() I learnt some Venda from a Venda soap opera called Muvhango and from my Venda friends in varsity... When we discovered that we were from the same province, we immediately bonded, but the issue is that I couldn't speak fluent Venda while they spoke to me in fluent Sepedi... They then started complaining of how I don't seem bothered in learning their language and they'd sometimes deliberately come to my residence just to chill and speak solely in Venda, when I ask them to code switch to Sepedi, they'd refuse by telling me to learn their language, I had no choice but to ask them to teach me so that I can be fluent in it. I learnt Tsonga from my ex, I'd ask him to speak to me in the language so that I can learn it... I also learnt it by watching a Tsonga soap opera called Giyani. And Gauteng province happens to be the most diversed province here in SA, so almost everyone can speak each other's languages. Mikocake: |

Oh! So our native languages are trash? Then stop engaging with South Africans on social media if you have issues with them using the languages they're comfortable in... We understand each other on social media and are not bothered. So whenever you see a South African on your FB, please block him or her, case closed. Goo0dHardDick: |

Samantha125:That’s quite impressive. From my understanding, you guys are like one big family with different dialect. Thanks for taking your time to explain these things. I’ve always been fascinated by SA culture from the very first day a watched Mr Bones back in early 2000s. It’s quite interesting |
