I have pulled out a significant chunk of my funds from the market.

What has the government done for me to deserve a whooping 30% of my sweat money when I am the local government of myself? Tax is a social contract!

When the draconian CGT law is revised, I will bring it back but for now I prefer to keep my portfolio very low.

What I gain is always more important than what I lose. That is growth mindset.

But when what you lose is more important to you than what you gain. That is preservation or safety mindset.

Do whatever you choose to do. No need to inform us naa. Lol

I can bet my 2 cent that this CGT will not be implemented. There was a reason the last one was not. One, we dont have the infrastructure, two, the market is very dynamic and complex. Only the JIJO guys that swing though several stocks in a year will confuse the system.

Another example if dangote fertiliser/refinery list by say 2nd quarter next year and an investor enters into the stock by 3rd quarter and makes gain above 10m, will this be taxed too, considering the reset date of 31 Dec 2025.
This market go burst the tax guys head no worry.

Lots of time I see a dumbness in some people's reasoning:

You're 30, someone else is 50 and they show you their portfolio worth N2bn you feel intimated.

That's dumb.

Such comparison is apples to oranges.

You compare your portfolio at 30 to their own portfolio when they were 30 or you compare their current portfolio to what yours will be at 50 (adjusting for inflation in either case)

You've been in the market 5 years and you expect to match someone whose been there for 20 years. To what end??

Even if you're 50 and only have N10m, how about people who are 50 and can't even afford rent? How about your own good health.

If you don't learn to appreciate your own good things but instead fixate on others' achievements, you'll just keep robbing yourself of real joy which you could have enjoyed life with.

At the end of the day? Money is just some instance of an integer class in some database that allows addition and subtraction operators. Don't overrate it. It has its relevance, but also has its limits in significance.
The bolded got me laughing. Instance of a class (Integer) grin grin; so, money is an object.

With the bolded, I know you have knowledge of OOP.

Reset date isn't 31st December 2025 Ooo.
The cost taken is the higher between your purchase price before 31st Dec. 2025 and the actual price as at 31st Dec 2025.
It's not a fixed reset date but conditional.

If you bought DR in 2026, the reset date isn't applicable.
Your cost basis is from the 3Qrtr you entered DR in 2026.
i don't see the issue here.

1.5m is not money to brag with in a forum where the average portfolio is in hundreds of millions.

Your context on the conversation is limited.

If 1.5m is what intimates you, you're on your own.
Please which forum have average portfolio is in hundreds of millions?

It takes the same amount of effort to make 100% return with a N10k portfolio as it does with a N10m portfolio.

What I never understood was why people use numbers rather than percentages when stating their returns.

I've probably done 400% return on my portfolio year to date this year. This could mean I've turned 10k to 40k or I've turned 100m to 400m. Either way the effort used is the same

1. 10k to 40k is 300%??

2. The efforts aren't at all the same even with the simple strategy of just buying and waiting. Higher stakes requires higher due diligence. N10k not so much as N200m. Can you put 10k in one stock(most likely yes) can you try the same with N200m (maybe not)

3. If you understood the context of the conversation, you wouldn't think I shared my portfolio size in the post cos I didn't.

Maybe it's the N115m you saw, that's not my portfolio size.

Tax is calculated when you sell and takes the cash out of the market.
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by awesomeJ(m): 9:06am On Nov 15, 2025
By the way, using percentages is your own preference, I don't think you need to force everyone to prefer it too.

People choosing not to use actual figures should be because of their own security concerns not cos you prefer it for whatever reasons.

If someone has a portfolio of N2bn, you say you make 400% returns and I say I make N1.5m returns, which do you think would intimudate himhuh

The N1.5m would be like a rounding error amount to him, whereas your 400% might make him feel like he's failing or not doing enough.

What if I yet share the amount but it was just N23k , would you have still been bothered? I think you should just adjust your own mindset and leave the matter. your preference is just your preference not the standard.

Money supply growth continue to decline in 2025 which means inflation would be on a downward trend for the foreseeable future. You can see how high it was in 2024.

When you use numbers you run the risk of creating a toxic culture.

I personally know a few very rich people and not one of them would publicly state their worth.

People who go about flaunting numbers tend not to be rich. They are either excited about the number or they are lying. Yes people can Photoshop portfolios.

One interesting thing I have noticed in this thread is that very few people post their trade as at the time they make the trade. They always come and state of I did this and this is how much I made. If you can't post a position as at time of entry what's the point posting when you exit.

Anyway what do I know, for all I know I could be speaking to a 21 year old person smoking weed in his university hostel

Means market likely to dump in the short term. Equity prices traditionally follows money supply.

I don't think there is any big deal when people flaunt figures in an investment forum.

It motivates some of us to do better.

That would be a tenant in my rental property, except that I explicitly state on the rent receipt that smoking and Internet fraud aren't allowed, and if anyone is caught in the act, they would be evicted and their rent reimbursed. I had to emphasize the Internet fraud part cos the facility is premium and commands between 67 - 100% rent premium.

You can accept this reality or you could choose to imagine that I'm still preparing for Jamb, whatever helps you sleep.

On top N1.6m??

What if someone who has N10bn here now shows their portfolio??

Is it that you seeing it then reduces your own portfolio??

Maybe when maturity sets in, reactions begin to differ.
