I never did cohabited with my husband before getting married, I'd just visit and come back home.

I wasn't going to perform any full time wifely duties when I wasn't married and my family is against it.

Yes they do. Even the holy art thou do it. But they won’t say it when asked in a gathering how they met their spouse or stages they got married.
They will hide that part

My honest take:
If two people can truly get to know and understand each other through only weekend visits and short stays, then that’s great for them. But personally, I believe that if you really want to know whether those sweet names “my love,” “my honey,” “my baby” are real, try cohabiting and see if you can survive one full year together. If you make it through that, then your real journey has only just begun.

Let’s be honest: no one truly understands what happens in a home except the two people living in it. Religious advice is important for those who are religious, yes, but religious leaders don’t run your home for you. When you let them, well, the men here know better. You are the ones who will live with the consequences, good or bad. In my case, I did for 2 years before marriage, now 21 years still counting...

And finally, one critical point:
As a man, never beg or pressure a woman into marriage.

Pls cohabit before you marry pls so you dnt go and marry pretender that will ruin your life.

Know her very well before you enter marriage with her.

My honest advise....forget about all those cultural stunt and my pastor says or my imam says I swear na regret dey follow listening to those people in term of marriage.

I did cohabit with my bf-turned-hubby briefly, I think about a month or so.

Our house got burnt to rubbles, as in totally burnt, and my parents weren't around at the time, they'd traveled. We, my siblings and I, shared ourselves to live with family and friends. I was more comfortable staying with him. The fire incident was December, I went back to school in January and before the semester ended around March or so, my dad had fixed the whole issue.

We started staying together though after our traditional marriage. I'd wanted to wait till the white wedding was done (cause we had months in between) but my mum wouldn't have it. She said we were already married white wedding or not.

I wouldn't let my daughter do it. I wouldn't encourage my son to do it.

Marriage is very different from Cohabitation. You can walk out of living with another person, but it will take you 2-5 yeara plus a minimum of N1.5million to leave a court marriage and that's minus children's expenses.

You can cohabit with someone and you won't realise just how much she dislikes your family, then you marry her and she declares if your mama enter that house, na war. (Festac and Amuwo Odofin parts of Lagos are filled with men who brought "decent virgins" to stay with them, tested them out and married and now they're in their 30s and oh boy, she be African Warrior).

You can cohabit with a man and see how neat and hardworking he is, then he marries and tells you "you're my wife, in my culture men don't enter the kitchen". My brothers have oyinbo mentality, but when they got married, I heard from their wives how traditional they were, and it was baffling to me (because I don't know where they got it from).

Marriage has scenarios you won't even dream and will never happen in Cohabition. Nobody expects your girlfriend to sacrifice her career to take care of anybody else, but everyone demands it of wives. There is nothing in Cohabitation that will show you how your girlfriend really thinks about you giving money to your family, because she will never say her mind as your babe, but once you marry and born, you go hear am.

You will never know the kind of mind your girlfriend has until you wife her. When you're broke and there's no money for diapers or Golden Morn for the kids and she turns into a wild lioness and you never saw it coming because as 2 single people living together, your Responsibilities looked way different than as a Married Couple.

Men really don't respect most women who do it, they won't admit it but once you annoy them, they'll silently be wondering why you won't find your way back to your father's house. One chick tweeted once that the man she was living with traced out "leave" on the window rather than tell her to her face and she shamefully got the message.

Even the people that invented it, they still have high divorce rates from it (cohabit for 5 years, marry for 2 and divorce sharply).

It works for some people but in general, it doesn't work for more people.

All these can't guarantee a successful marriage. You can't predict Life, there are happy couples who divorced when their child died and unhappy couples that stayed together and battled cancer in one of their spouses together.

Leave that "if" factor bro life is about risk. Its better to take the risk than running away from it snd be facing 2baba embarrassment in the hand of unruly pretentious woman who will turn your husband and take advantage of you.

Mind you I'm not saying turning her into slave, punching bag or sex machine pls I'm telling you to at least cohabit with her a little before marriage to know her better.

No offense it's my honest advise.

You cannot remove the If factor.
I have seen both sides happen.

I have seen married man lose wife and no issues just bury and remarry.
He has paid his bride price so no wahala from family. Unless he is found guilty of murder

I have seen bachelor that was innocent and he explain tire still in prison for death of his babe cohabiting. He is facing it far worse since he didn't follow the proper way to marry her.
His own punishment will be far worse than a Married man

I have seen someone cohabiting and she died in guy house.

explain that to Nigeria police.
It's easy for you to sit in comfort and type it until it happens to you. Then you realize how bad it is.
Getting married to her will make such statement make sense.
But a bachelor saying it just happened while she was under your care. U go explain tire for jail

Re: Married Men In The House, Did You Cohabit Before Getting Married? by oviexcels(m): 8:27pm On Dec 10, 2025
Cohabiting is not advisable. Marriage and courtship are two completely different things. I know someone who lived with his partner for about three years before marriage, and after the wedding he complained that his wife was depriving him of sex. What, then, was the purpose of the ‘experiment’? Cohabitation doesn’t guarantee a successful marriage, so there’s no need for it.

Re: Married Men In The House, Did You Cohabit Before Getting Married? by Bahamas95(m): 8:36pm On Dec 10, 2025
We met in school and lived in same hostel.

She only stayed in her room for about 4months before she moved in fully to my room. Mind you, other girls were in the hostel before she came. I didn't give them that privilege.

Immediately I saw her the first day I knew she would be my wife. I don't care what anybody says, cohabiting makes you know more about the person.

The only advice I will give to any man that wanna cohabit is that if you ain't too sure of marrying her avoid impregnating her...... After she passed my test I did the needful after graduation.
