crownprince2017:2 of 3 IAS 16 (depreciation) and 38(amortization) accounting policy determines wat you will use. Is the company using Reducing balance or straight line approaching in determining their depreciation accounting method? A SLM increases EBIT thereby increasing NP but a RBL reduces EBIT and NP but increases EBITDA Summary - Use EBITDA if the companies you want to analyze uses same accounting policy, have huge investment in PPEs which will have impact in their depreciation and amortization. Use Net profit if both vertical analysis/Top-down approach and Horizontal analysis/Trend analysis remain the same over-time and with companies having low PPEs and depreciation. |

crownprince2017:1 of 3 Firstly, recognizing accounting methods and it’s impact in financial reports and metrics is very important. Two identical companies can report vastly different results based on policy choices and a change in policy can invalidate year-on-year comparisons. Reported earnings can be significantly different from economic reality. Accounting policies determine how financial results are measured and presented; thus, identical business operations may yield divergent results under different policies. The accounting policy used will determine whether to use Net profit or EBITDA In a horizontal or trend analysis - where you compare the ratios or metrics of several years or period, using net profit if the company adopts one accounting policy without changing it overtime is okay or where the company analyzed is not investing much in PPEs which has big material impact on depreciation. |

crownprince2017:3 of 3 Two firms, both IFRS-compliant, can report materially different profits, leverage ratios, and cash flows — purely due to policy discretion. Analysts must normalize results under comparable assumptions before valuation. “Accounting numbers are the language of business; understanding the grammar of accounting methods is what separates analysts from observers.” Always dig into the notes to the accounts. Your analysis only begins after you have adjusted for accounting policy differences. |

emmaodet:Who told you stock trading is boring I said the market needs depth, I didn't say trading is boring. I used boring to describe the strategies of long termers who just buy, and hold and collect dividends. Even then, the term is relative. It's boring to me, but exciting and rewarding for them. |

A man walked in to see his grandma lying unconscious on the ground. He rushed her to the hospital where the doctor told him "I have both good news and bad news. Which one would you like to hear first?". The man chose to hear the bad news first so the doctor said " the bad news is that your grandma has suffered a massive stroke and would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life. You'll have to arrange for her to be bathed, fed, etc. She'll need round the clock care and attention". Very sad, the man then asked the doctor, "what's the good news?", to which the doctor replied with a laugh " don't mind me, I've just been clowning around.. she's actually dead" 😂 |

A man was involved in a car accident and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. When the surgery was over the doctor had a discussion with the patient's family.. "he's going to be allright" the doctor said. The family members of the patient shouted for joy but the doctor asked them why they were so happy. "You just told us he's going to be alright", one of them said, to which the doctor replied " the patient lost his left hand so he's going to only be able to use his right. He's going to be "allright"! ![]() |

emmaodet:I chop statistics, I'm a student of numbers, my world revolves around numbers. Whether skewed or not , that is another topic entirely. Is Ghana not relatively more stable than Nigeria in terms of SECURITY ? Abi Na Ghana, Yankee go bomb last night ? Is Ghana battling uncertainty about tax and CIT or CGT Abi Wetin you dey call am right now ? Which foreign investors go bring fund into a country with no clear policy. Investors love clarity Ghana's equity YTD is 132% while that of Nigeria is 55.9% . Is that a lie ? I stand by what I said , today's Ghana is relatively stable compared to Nigeria and even a blind man can see that . It is not an attack on Nigeria, it is a challenge for us to do better. We should wake up and take our rightful position amongst Nations. On a lighter note ; Ghana dey go world , NFF dey struggle through backdoor to disqualify Dr Congo. Lol ... Yesterday, the chief of Nigeria supporters club said Nigeria is the only country without supporters club in the ongoing Africa Nations cup cos NFF said no fund ... Is that not laughable The giant should wake up. We all love our country and we want it to be better . God Bless The Federal Republic of Nigeria I'm signing out now , it's boxing day morning, make I go open gifts Shalom |

ZikkyChops:Yeah, you win some, you lose some. This was a stock i gradually accumulated since 2021 (knowing fully well their OS is not much)@ a cheap price in the range of N10 - N16. Then all of a sudden it rose to N80 around September this year and i quickly exited my position. Since then it had not gotten below N80. In the words of Mankind i could just have exercise more patience to enjoy this outstanding dividend ( the highest they ever paid while i held the stock) and not just that they top it up with bonus shares. Lesson learnt: Don't be in a hurry to exit a position especially if there is sudden appreciation in price. Wait for the finanacial report (especially if it is near) before taking a decision ![]() |

Exiting Vitafoam when you did should have been based on strong, rational grounds—the company's fundamentals haven't changed at all. It remains a true compounding stock: consistent annual dividends, steadily growing revenue year after year, a strong economic moat, moderate OS(1.25B) and relatively good liquidity. I truly empathize with you for exiting too early. Your story is remarkably similar to Madam Flo's, who emotionally sold off her FIRSTHOLDCO shares. More wealth has been surrendered by exiting good companies prematurely than by market crashes. You didn't just miss the ₦3.00 dividend—you also missed the 1-for-5 bonus issue and the powerful future compounding that could have followed. jonnysessy: |
