Embracing Authentic Grit: Lessons from Caroline Adams Miller for Nigerian Investors Caroline Adams Miller is a pioneering positive psychology expert, executive coach, and bestselling author known for her groundbreaking work on goal-setting, success, and authentic grit. With a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania—one of the first cohorts—she has authored books like Getting Grit (2017) and Big Goals (2024). Miller distinguishes "authentic grit" as the passionate pursuit of hard, long-term goals with humility, positive impact, and inspiration for others, contrasting it with "false" forms like "stubborn grit" (persisting wrongly), "faux grit" (pretending), or "selfie grit" (for personal acclaim). From SMART to BRIDGE: A Superior Framework for Goal Accomplishment Traditional goal-setting often relies on the SMART acronym (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), but Miller argues it's outdated and insufficient for big, transformative goals. In her work, particularly Big Goals, she introduces the BRIDGEmethodology as a revolutionary, evidence-based alternative that incorporates cutting-edge research from positive psychology, resilience, mindset, and grit. BRIDGE stands for: - Brainstorming: Generate bold, inspiring ideas without limits. - Relationships: Build supportive networks and accountability partners. - Investments: Commit time, energy, and resources fully. - Decisions: Make deliberate choices aligned with values. - Grit: Cultivate authentic perseverance through challenges. - Excellence: Pursue mastery and continuous improvement. This framework addresses the "how" of goal pursuit, emphasizing humility, positive risks, and flourishing—making it ideal for investing, where emotional resilience and long-term discipline trump short-term tactics. Why Authentic Grit Outperforms Intelligence in Investing Research supports Miller's emphasis on grit over raw intellect. Angela Duckworth's seminal work shows grit—passion and perseverance for long-term goals—predicts success better than IQ in domains like education, military training, and professional achievement. In investing: - Philip Tetlock's Superforecasting highlights grit as far more predictive of accurate predictions than intelligence. - Studies on household investors (e.g., Finnish data linking IQ to performance) show smarter individuals trade better, but behavioral biases often undermine them—grit helps overcome disposition effect (holding losers too long) and impulsivity. - A recent CEPR paper found gritty investors exhibit lower loss aversion, better exit losing positions, and accumulate ~7% more wealth. Sophisticated, high-IQ investors may overtrade or chase trends, while gritty ones stay disciplined, compounding returns over decades. Successful Investors Exemplifying Authentic Grit. The investment world rewards those with authentic grit—patient, humble perseverance toward long-term value. - Warren Buffett: The Oracle of Omaha embodies grit. Starting young, he endured market crashes (e.g., 2008, losing billions temporarily) but stuck to value investing principles from mentor Benjamin Graham. Buffett's "lifetime decision card with twenty punches" mindset avoids impulsive trades, focusing on businesses with moats. His humility (admitting mistakes) and inspiration (annual letters teaching millions) align perfectly with Miller's authentic grit. Result: Berkshire Hathaway's compounded returns turned modest beginnings into hundreds of billions. Other examples include: - Charlie Munger (Buffett's partner): Lifelong learning and resilience through setbacks. - Value investors like Seth Klarman: Patient during bubbles, avoiding hype. These outperform "sophisticated" traders who rely on complex models but lack perseverance. The Urgent Need for Nigerian Investors to Embrace Authentic Grit Nigeria's investment landscape—volatile naira, inflation, regulatory shifts, and market inefficiencies—demands more than intelligence or sophistication. Short-term speculation (e.g., crypto hype or quick flips) often leads to losses, while authentic grit fosters disciplined, long-term wealth-building. In Nigeria's emerging markets, embracing Miller's BRIDGE—brainstorming opportunities in stocks/real estate, building networks, investing patiently, deciding wisely, gritting through volatility, and pursuing excellence—can turn savvy traders into enduring wealth creators. Authentic grit isn't innate; it's cultivable through self-compassion, role models, and deliberate practice. For Nigerian investors, it's the bridge from survival trading to generational prosperity. As Miller teaches: Pursue hard goals that awe and inspire—your portfolio, and Nigeria's economy, will flourish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMJ2mKDLzDc?si=_2lFWJ9HskzMFiXx |

emmanuelewumi:Interesting. Bought @ ₦7 Dividend is now almost at circa ₦5-₦7. The initial investment may return ₦7 in dividend alone by this time in 2027. 100% return in 5yrs on dividend alone!! Thats one huge vivid mental Investment decision visual. ![]() (Though you've averaged up since then) 72-rule. Interesting mental short-cut. just learnt this from @Harddiskng |

Is it not funny that someone says leverage works for him and you says is not possible when he has shown evidence how he does it. You are new to a thread and he has shown how he has used it based on his cash flow.He has said how he gets his loans and not necessarily from banks and I have come to see it is very possible If I am expecting dividend of 30 million in this first quarter. I sight a good investment which may not be available at that good entry price by first quarter. I decide to collect 10 million from my broker and invest in January. Then by April I liquidity the loan of 30% per annum in 4 months. Then this investment delivers like 30% by April with possible dividend of 7% on top.I did not pay 30% on the loan again because I cleared it in 4 months from another cash flow.Is that not leverage at work.If you have not be following someone ways of dealings don't come and say what he is doing can't work abeg.He keep saying his target to pay back the loan is guaranteed cash flow from somewhere else which is very important. Yesterday I spoke to an inlaw and he said he has paid over 60 million on interest from different bank over draft this yr.I told him that is much.He said it does not matter because he equally has made alot of gains in the business he used the over draft for at different times this yr.If you can use bank loan for business. Why can't u use it for stock business if you understand it.Thr are people who will say,I can never use bank loans for business like me..lol Then here my inlaw says it works for him as he is into production. He uses the overdraft sometimes for importation of raw materials or clearing of raw materials. He even just leverage or loan to buy presco rights which he showed here..so rest |

emmanuelewumi:I reckon that as well. Was trying to be conservative as you do.. Just as you do with leverage as well. |
| Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by ositadima1(m): 2:20pm On Dec 28, 2025 |
Harddiskng:As a science student, you should also understand how this works. What Mr. Emma is saying about using loans to acquire stocks is plausible, even in Nigeria. Let me explain why, based on my limited understanding. You carry out a thorough valuation and identify a stock that is deeply undervalued, essentially at a giveaway price. But, you may not have the bulk of the required funds available as cash at that time, even though you have stable and reliable income sources that generate cash annually. The plan is to service and clear the loan using these independent income streams, not relying on the stock itself, within a maximum of two to three years. It is important to note that you do not hold the full loan for the entire two or three years; both the principal and the interest are gradually repaid over time. In this scenario, even if the stock price declines, perhaps because the broader market enters a bear phase, you can still service the loan comfortably. Price appreciation was never the primary source of repayment. At most, dividends from the stock may serve as a secondary support, not the core repayment plan. |
| Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Harddiskng(m): 4:17pm On Dec 28, 2025 |
ositadima1:At the bolded is an entirely new discussion. You just said you have the ability to service the loan irrespective of whether the venture you took the loan for succeeds or not. Let’s always clarify, there are different kinds of people reading this, including those without the ability to service the loan if the venture fails. For them using loan to buy stocks should be a capital NO. |
| Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Streetinvestor2: 4:29pm On Dec 28, 2025 |
Harddiskng:Nobody has advocated for such in this thread.or you prove me wrong with such post |
| Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by emmanuelewumi(m): 4:29pm On Dec 28, 2025 |
Harddiskng:Read what I have been writing since morning. Investment cash flow and others should be the source of loan servicing and should NEVER be capital appreciation Leverage is a NO for 90% of us, but it is very good for about 10% or less of us. Such people must have an above average knowledge of the stock market, should know how to value a business, have multiple streams of income, the total loan should not be more than 3 times of the most recent annual dividend earned by their portfolio, have a good risk management in place. It takes someone with cash flow to buy stocks every month, instead of buying an undervalued stock every month for the next 2 years, why can't one get a loan equivalent to to the amount that would be invested for next 24 months. |

Agbalowomeri:You would be surprised what some people would take away from a conversation when it is not properly clarified It is not about being a baby or not. You can see the influx of people new to this. Some would likely take it as an advice from a veteran, undermining the risk. I can’t count how many stock suggestions that should be ignored some people have taken here and had their fingers burnt. |

Did you just say "new to stock trading" it should be "new to stock investing". Just be careful, ngx can humble one if you don't know what you are doing. Many people have the wrong impression of the market hence the reason why many labeled it as scam. The same way someone makes hundreds of million on a stock, another buyer losses hundreds of million also. sundayakasdy: |

I like Vitafoam. I initially bought at N23 this time last year, and I’ve bought more since then, avg price is now around 50, if it does another 50% from current price. I will be thinking of exiting the position. emmanuelewumi: |
