The average portfolio size here is perhaps N500m.

My current portfolio is less than that.

Something never ceases to amaze me:

Why guys like you with portfolios in billions or at least hundreds of millions will see 200k as money when it shoould simply be a rounding error on your account.

I just don't understand.

The least amount that should even make you guys think of figures being brandished should be at least tens of millions.

I just never understand.

Just like at my current portfolio level, someone mentioning 20k wouldn't be a relevant amount to me.

Someone has been consistently trying to buy a 1m units of a N2270 at N2497 and you think they agree with you that it's overpriced?

When you see a stock on heavy full bid with no one willing to sell, consistently for more than 1 year, what it means is that it's underpriced in your market. Why you would think otherwise is strange.

@KarlTom
It simply means na institutional investors dey hold am. Retail investors buy and sell over- or underpriced stocks everyday grin

It also just means NGX is not efficient enough to facilitate free trade flows in the market.

A stock like Airtel should be doing N2bn in daily trades easily. That's over N500bn in a year.

And N1.5bn in potential fees to the NGX, even the shareholders should raise this matter.

And it's not just Airtel alone, it has happened to almost every stock worth above N500 at some point.

I prefer to believe that.

Only short sighted people would prefer to believe a smaller figure and then start thinking they've arrived when their portfolio hits N50m.

With my thinking, even at N200m , I know i'm only just starting cos I need to catch Agba before he reaches N10bn.

That thinking only helps me stay motivated, why do you think there's a downside to it?

There are people who feel intimidated or get jealous when they realize that people here have portfolios over N50bn.

I'm not one of such people, I don't suffer from such foolishness.

If pa Emma reads that someone here has N50bn, don't you think he will realize he still need to grow his current N5bn portfolio?

It's currently at 280p in London.
Consider that while you're waiting.

If SEPLAT does another 10% to 6800, it will likely get into another extended period of illiquidity (full offers)

Please house help me clarify.

Assume I have $1500 in dorm account and it's been there for some years.

Now I want to convert it to Naira to buy stocks or invest in bonds or treasury bills.

If I convert it, will I have to pay capital gains tax?

Also, this $$$ wasn't bought with Naira. Some came from freelance and others through gift from clients.

If I'm to pay CGT, how do I determine what exchange rate to use etc?

I'm wondering if the Naira that will be paid for the dollars will be treated as income hence the taxing.

Mind you, I have been investing in USD fixed deposit for some years and they charge witholding tax normal.

Please help out thanks.

Maybe yes, maybe note. Until we get Elumelu's motives and future actions, we may not know. Elumelu may want to increase his stake from just 20%

Yes.

My comment was skewed by my short term mind.

It's complicated irrelevant to long termers.

Thanks for the balance.

Not a bad day. The Index closed within the expected range. Less sectors closed in red compared with yesterday.

If you understood the problem you would know stock split doesn't change anything.

If you split the stock from 2270 to 227, would that fix the issue of the same 227 stock selling for 700 in London?

But since you only trade one a year, you wouldn't understand these dynamics.

I would appreciate more clarity sir. I have tried to research but all results I'm getting is saying cgt will be paid based on acquisition cost and sales value which is confusing.

I have gone through the tax act but what is written there talks about item denominated in foreign currency which doesn't apply here.

I don't want to take decision only to later have issue with the tax people

You don't pay CGT when you change money from one currency to the other or makes deposit for shares.
You will only pay CGT when you buy shares and the price appreciates and you sell without reinvesting to buy another shares., that is why you have the acquisition cost and sales value

Based on the tax law, Agba with N5bn may pay less taxes than someone with a N20m portfolio. grin grin grin

I think it could help half way.The majority or big holder who wants to move the stock at 100k rule will have to sacrifice not that kind big loss again. if what he wants to gain in future is large.Thereby creating liquidity as the gap closes which will equally attract other holders to close the gap more.i hope I am making sense. The sacrifice can easily go round to close the gap even from traders like u
